    The Master quite liked the idea of the Valeyard until he realised that he'd be squaring up with a Doctor as ruthless as he is, maybe more so, The Master still to some degree sees the Doctor as a friend and is less focused on killing him and more defeating him; there's no telling how far the Valeyard will go.

    Ainley was a great Master - and often forgotten. Ainley, God rest his soul, hammed the Master up. I went to university with a 'friend' uncannily like Ainley's Master. Frighteningly so. I've always adored Ainley's 'campish' incarnation of the Master. Roger Delgado was splendid. Perfection. So too was the brilliant Michelle Gomez as 'Missy'. I'd love 'Missy' back. Redeemed? Who knows? Imagine a whole season of just 12 and Missy? It might even save what's left of my once favourite television show. I particularly loved the Sim Master. He was insane and driven towards madness as a child. Finally, some character development for the Master! His hatred of the Doctor has always been overblown. Why such malevolence? What did the Doctor do in their pasts to earn such hatred and scorn from the Master? I could understand why this brilliant, totally insane incarnation of the Master loathed the Time Lords so much. They screwed with his mind as a child. I'd loathe them too...

      They showed how close that could happen in The End of Time, but the constant drums playing in the Master's head that the Time Lords put there played so much havoc that he couldn't trust anyone. Not even his childhood friend. You are right, though. Those two did have so much potential at working together. It's not meant to be, sadly.

      Honestly that's part of the reason why I feel Moffat killed Missy off before we saw this come to fruition. I think people really don't realize that she had become the most dangerous Incarnation of the Master. Not only was she the most experienced and knowledgable (capable of anything previous Incarnations accomplished), but she had started to breakaway from their literal character flaws that had been holding them back. Though I hate we never got to see the character development through and Missy fully stand side by side with the Doctor, I can also see how that would have been a writers nightmare. The Doctor and his only near equal back to back on the same side. They'd make a joke out of any threat. Also, we've seen how close to jumping off the deep end the Doctor gets when he spends too much time alone, what about when he spends too much time with someone almost exactly like him (they've always been too sides of the same coin). Mortal and "down to earth" companions (human or otherwise) keep him grounded, the Master/Mistress would probably have the opposite effect. Still, I do wish we had kept that character development and just had the Master get his own TARDIS again and go off on their own adventures. Anything but the pure idiocy and character degradation in series 12.

    You know the Anthony Ainley incarnation of the Master was a bit of a loser being the "mastermind" behind each and every tiger scheme and always being defeated but he still claims that he has had an upper hand against the doctor. If he thinks he has been relatively close to the doctor all these years what was his defeat by The Valeyard like? What the hell did The Valeyard do to him that makes the usual arrogant Master thinks he's better? How many times has he lost against him? We need stuff like this answered in Big Finish.

    • @EditedAF987
      @EditedAF987 4 роки тому

      King Crimson it’s more just the mere idea of the Valeyard that the Master is worried about. He’s wanting to kill him before he gets anywhere near killing the Doctor

  • @GiratinaofFury
    @GiratinaofFury 6 років тому

    I don't think it's a simple matter that the Valeyard would be too much of an enemy for the Master to face, or that someone would deny him the victory that he desires over the Doctor, it's that the Valeyard is without a concept of beauty, delight, or enjoyment. Even the Master has admiration for some things, but the Valeyard, being the amalgamation of all that is evil in the Doctor would include no respect for the universe, he considers the simple pleasures to be folly. He would see it all destroyed - good, evil, and everything in between, and feel nothing for it.

    Ainley's Doctor Who Wiki pages says he hated Tom Baker but I just listened to him on the Keeper of Trakken commentary last night and he said he had known Tom for years when he came in because he was a very close friend of Richard Ainley's and that Tom was very friendly and welcoming to him when he played Tremas and the Master. Difficult though I know Baker could be, since Ainley was the brother of his close friend, I'm inclined to believe that.

    You know I've seen baffling Doctor Who episodes galore but this one was just an outright freaking mess! As underwhelming as Colin Baker was, I feel bad for him because I know he loves the show and wanted to be better than he was. I really should listen to some of his Big Finish stuff.

      Too much going on behind the scenes. The writer Robert Holmes died and due to rights issues the second half had to be written with virtually no notice by Pip and Jane Baker. Also script editor Eric Saward also quit at this time. It's surprising it was as good as it was.

      I couldn't work out why after all the bother to paint the roundals black, and the columns and the scanner, why use the scanner and the wall by the door to act as a corridor, when it is so clearly not. You would have thought someone would have pointed out during the filming or when they watched it during the editing, but probably someone will try and tell us it was 'cos of time and lack of money and a very short scene, and few would notice during the broadcast. With no worries about repeated viewing. One very interesting thing, from that point on, we saw less and less interior Tardis scenes, so maybe the walls warped after the repainting?

    His acting is exquisite in EVERY episode he is in. Just look at tom's boredom & frustration with the role & in his inability to leave. Look at Davison's frivolous overexerted exterior compensating for dead sets. Listen to Colin "Growling" his lines more often than not in abhorrence with an amalgamation of JNT's Hawaiian shirt collection. And then you have poor McCoy, desperately trying to act his way deeper & darker out of a vast array of question marks. But in every take.. every scene... Ainley is as expressive & obsessed as a villain should be! He is a real treat to watch! And perhaps should have played the Doctor. A wonderful man. Silently & subtly confident in his ability to remain a gentleman. No wonder he didn't marry. And which is why he remained very well adjusted throughout his life.

    Anthony Ainley was an extremely good looking man‘s man, a rugby player and cricket enthusiast. He played super roles in upstairs downstairs, Spyders Web with Patricia Cutts (Ainley as a secret agent and one of my favorites) and would have made a great James Bond in the early 70s had he had the chance. Classic as the “Master“ he brought class to Dr. Who at that time. We Brits can be happy we have so many great character actors in film, tv and radio to enrich our quality entertainment over decades.
