    Mornings are awesome for doing something for yourself. I used to think I was a night owl. Then I started going to sleep earlier and waking up early in the morning. Was pleasantly surprised to find that I got a lot more out of the early mornings than I ever did out of late nights. I usually start my day with a walk while I listen to an audiobook or UA-cam - lately its been a Pimsleur course or something like this video. After I get back home, I either do flash cards or just read an article or two in my target language while I have a morning coffee. Each of these things was once a "frog" to me, but now that I've built daily habits they're quite pleasant. As a result, I've tended to stack these new habits in the morning, giving myself something before I give time to my day job.

Because I know the plot I don’t have to worry what is happening, I just focus on the words I can understand, next I’ll try and get through with no subtitles. Much harder. I agree with everything and the tips. If you've watched the video and still struggle with this, you may have a weak reason for learning your target language. Reflect and really think why you want to learn the language, have a strong "why do I want to learn this?". There will be multiple times in your language learning journey that you will question yourself "why bother?". This is why you need a strong enough reason. If your brain is fried and can't even start, implement all his tips in the vidéo and you're golden.

    • @TheHeadOfState

      Well said. I think a lot of people (particularly Gen Z/my age) have a "quitter" mentality, and whilst there's definitely a discipline problem amongst a lot of young people, there's also a kind of ADHD factor too, where people are flimsily setting goals they don't actually want to see through. High value comment tho

    • @ClaudiaEhrhardt
      @ClaudiaEhrhardt Місяць тому

      I'm Gen X, we usually weren't allowed to give up, as kids we got a kind of time frame which we have to push through before we could quit. Usually between 6 months and a year. That's engrained in Gen X. After awhile of learning Russian it felt like I don't make progress, nothing made sense - and I started dabbling with Dutch. Dutch is quite easy for a German who speaks English, so progress is there all the time. It showed me that my way of learning works, just that Russian is more complicated and so needs more time / effort.

    Good video! I've been learning languages independently for nearly 6 years now and I've had a streak over 800 days and a few over 100 across multiple languages, all of which I ended purposefully. Duolingo is a great way to introduce yourself to a language, the first few lessons always teach the same sort of content. Writing system, some very standard words. I think people should use this opening step as a way to master pronunciation early on, and by that I mean listen to anything but the robot voices at Duolingo because they get things wrong. I also agree that the streak can be used to motivate studying but by the end of my longest streak I found myself keeping it up just for the sake of keeping it up and I wasn't learning anything. Now I track all my days on a weekly tracker on my tablet and I infrequently use Duolingo just to try the end of unit tests as a way to assess what I learn outside of the app. Finding a way to self-motivate is paramount to the success of any long term project, like learning a language. Everyone is different so if one finds themselves motivated by the streak and consistently improving then absolutely, they should continue it. Duolingo is really bad at actually teaching though and I've long grown to hate its' methods. It is absolutely not the language learning phenom it claims to be. If you want to learn more vocabulary use Drops or dictionaries and make flashcards, get comprehensible input in the form of reading and listening, and speak with AI or other learners and speakers. Conversation. Back and forwards. That is how you learn a language, not with 1 dimensional auxiliary tools like Duolingo. All in all I think Duo's usefulness is up by about a month into any language learning process. There are good things and bad things about it. I'm working on Chinese now and of all the languages I've studied this is the one I have used Duolingo for the least. It has also become my best language in less time than I spent on any other language individually, and I attribute this to the culmination of good studying techniques I've accrued since I started this hobby. Anyone new to languages reading this, heed my words so that you don't also have to spend 5 years learning how to acquire a language properly. Also I can't tell if your website is predatory or if it doesn't take itself seriously lol. Anyway I respect the hustle, if I wasn't lazy I would probably sell my knowledge too. Guess there will always be people that pay for self help courses for some reason. I just can't deal with the dedication to marketing.

    I have been using Duolingo every day for 800 days with very few exceptions. I didn't even plan to learn a language at the moment, my friend talked me into it and I chose to get back to French after several years. Somehow the game features of Duolingo really kept me going until I got serious with learning, because of a job offer. Some people in flashcards favour just putting words but no context, generally. If a phrase is needed, you can't remember it or get it wrong or confuse two similar phrases then adding more context in flashcards. Generally I wouldn't though. Interesting ideas about output, though. I'm not keen on active recall. It's very burdensome. I do do this if I really need the word? am struggling with it. I add active recall if I need to look up something I already have a card for so obviously the passive recall on its own didn't 'stick'. An advantage of Anki is it arranges its sequence of cards. I mean other systems are possible. Overall, Interesting ideas.

They never got back to me and when it happened two more times I ditched French (after 766 days) because it was énervant! I’m doing Hangul now. 70 days. The answer is yes. The answer is yes because it is promoting regular interaction with the target language. It doesn’t matter if the user learns anything new, and no one is expecting duo to be some type of magic bullet. But creating a regular routine is a keystone towards getting better in your target language. Duo is the lesser evil in this game. The alternative is making yourself have a routine with no strategy or structure. Duo nags you every day. Are you going to be motivated otherwise? No, no you’re not. Does that mean the learners need a paid account? No. No one needs a paid Duo account. You can go for 6 years with a non paid account. I promise you. I have and continue to. Duo helped me keep a routine. I rarely forget. I think the biggest gap is maybe 2 days in a row. I also found that sticking at it and completing the tree means I have a fairly okay general understanding of my target. I can read simple text. I can make simple sentences. I can understand spoken up to a point. No, I am not fluent. But I can do a lot more than I could 6 years ago.
