The adventures of an American going to medical school in Amsterdam.
The problem with learning Dutch
Every English-speaking foreigner in the Netherlands knows the unique struggle of trying to learn Dutch. The Dutch are so good at English and so chill + nice about switching to it that it requires serious dedication to get some practice with the Dutch language!
So in this video I share the most useful things I did to learn Dutch. I hope it helps you feel more confident that it's possible for you to learn the language too. With enough time and persistent "spreek gewoon Nederlands hoor"-ing, I promise you will be able to learn Dutch!

Trying not to decay during quarantine
Within a few weeks of quarantine starting (almost a year ago now), I was feeling the effects of sitting all day, every day, taking my medical school classes online. I know they say "use it or lose it", but I legit developed back pain within like 5 days - kind of impressive, but also distressing! And I was generally just feeling crappy and tired all the time. Since then I've figured out that mov...
Switching to medical school after studying history | What I wish I’d known
When I realized I wanted to go into medicine after graduating with a BA in History, I had a lot of questions (/fears) about making the switch from being a life-long humanities lover to a stone cold scientist. If you've also studied a humanities subject and want to go to medical school, hopefully I can help you get some insight into what that's like.
The Dutch are generally a very sane and sober bunch, but there are a few things that took some getting used to when I moved to the Netherlands from the United States. I'm sure other Americans will recognize some of these? Or maybe there's some Dutch people who'll agree that some of these cultural quirks are confusing?

This week’s video is part medical mystery/whodunit, and part public service announcement. But above all, this is a shit story. We can all relate to this unique misery since we’ve all got a story of our own (right? right guys??) but the stakes are exceptionally high here because it all takes place in a house of haute couture. 1st year of Dutch medical school (I'm American)
Some memorable moments from my first year of medical school in the Netherlands. This year was mostly spent studying, but that's not very memorable. I mean I did memorize everything I learned, it's just not *memorable*. Get it? Anyway, I talk about the fun and not-so-fun moments of being a first year medical student (in a foreign country) like anatomy lab, physical examination training, internsh...
just pretend like you dont speak english
I really enjoyed watching your videos. Please make more contents regarding medical school in the NL ✨
Just keep on speaking Dutch,...that is the answer...And say to them.
Great video!
What is your schedule like? How many summer months etc. are there, or are there schedules we could find🤗 Also how is the matching process for specialties?
This video is so funny.
To be honest, you sound like a Dutchie speaking fluent English.😲 The thick 'r' you have is very much like the 'Gooise r' usually typical for Dutch M/F toffs.
Casey says 'Hi'! 😄
being able to go to a restourant is a basic human right !! geting things for free is not >>>>
Must see Dutch movies, best one (imho.) first: Jackie (with Carice van Houten and Holly Hunter) Bride Flight (short appearance Rutger Hauer) Minoes (with Carice van Houten)
This is something I will use when I go to the Nederlands. Since I'm not a native English speaker, I'll just pretend I don't speak it by using broken English. I hope it'll work
Hello dear Emily, can you please tell the process to get into dutch medical school for my bachelor's?
which dutch word did you say at 7:40 ?
Haha tell me about it. I was born in Holland, moved away and stopped speaking Dutch. Then came back and no-one wanted to speak Dutch with me :(
Ouch. I guess that hurt you a lot, didn't it?
Wow, well spoken dutch 👍
Can you go over the admissions process for US citizens & tuition cost to go to Med school in the Netherlands?
Hi Emily..you are brave enough to come to the Netherlands, learn Dutch fluently, and on top of that being a med student. I don't know ...but that's a double challenge (respect!!)...all new experiences makes you grow for sure and I hope you can continue your study and become a doctor...go for it...ms.Braveheart!!
Hi Emily! Thanks for this video detailing your experience in Med school! I’m a medical lab technologist/aspiring pathologist who lives in the U.S. but is debating whether or not to study here just because of the sheer costs. Not to mention, I feel the medical system here tends to serve those with a socioeconomic advantage here more than others. Finally, with the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade and increasingly polarized political climate, I don’t know if I want to stay here anymore. Would it be okay if I asked you 1) what are the costs of being a medical student in the Netherlands 2) do you have any tips or advice for those considering studying medicine outside of the U.S.? Thanks again for making this video, and good luck with your studies!
Hey! The costs of med school vary depending on the school, I think, but its generally a small fraction of what it is in the US. If you would ever want to move back to the US though, its good to know that EU medical licences aren't accepted there! As for general tips for studying medicine abroad: consider the local language (would you like to learn it), ideally you could temporarily move to that country or do a long visit before applying to med school there to make sure you like living there. Check with whatever school you're interested in how/if they can help you with a (student) visa. If you're interested in the Netherlands specifically, check out Maastricht University. They have an english language bachelor in Medicine during which you also learn dutch at the same time, so you can do the master in Dutch. Good luck to you! :)
@@emilycharles8886 Don't you mind sharing with me the application process?
Lol, snijzaal. As a Dutch guy i could watch a video of you saying snijzaal a hundred times and enjoy myself. Good luck with your study, especially in the snijzaal.
Hey Emily, did you stop making videos? :) you're probably very busy now because you're a medical student... I'm learning Dutch (because I will later on move to Nederland to work as a tandarts haha) Ik vind je video echt leuk en nuttig! :) please consider doing more Dutch or Netherlands related videos!! Bye!
Hoi! I am busy now so I haven't made videos in awhile, but I hope to again in the future! Thanks for your nice comment :)
Hi Emily. Succes!
Accentless dutch the greatest feat a non Dutch person can achieve
3:20 great culture books high litterature value
Hi.. I am first year student in medicine. In Ukraine. Can I transfer to Netherland for farther medicine education. Please reply me
You've honestly watched more Dutch movies than most Dutch people have.
Speaking Dutch to Dutch People is like playing ‘Among Us.’ By God if you slip up, you need a good excuse.
Writing Dutch as a foreigner is quite difficult. That is why we prefer that you write in English, we also write in English rather than in our own language.. This is because the translation is different and not exactly the same as it is intended... Even the translation of words will not be the same, and will be seen as strange... and mostly the words dont make any sense.. (direct translation), is what we do mostly of the time, even if we don't focus on it.. (we automatically translate writing words directly in to dutch).. and that's why most of us don't understand it right away, until we read it again..
Nice vid indeed!
Hey emily ! I have a question, can i equalize the pre clinical years that i did in my country with exams in the Netherlands??
So great and thanks for sharing your funny stories! I am just shocked you speak Dutch so fluently. How did you do that?? Because I also want to learn medical Dutch to prepare for the future study in the hospital. May I get some suggestions from you? Thx a lot!
??? English is the easiest language in the world, and to boot, it's remarkably similar to Dutch. Both descend from the same Proto-Germanic language, but have simplified over the years; however, English has taken the simplifications much farther than Dutch has, and there isn't one aspect of English that be any whit harder than in Dutch. All this is to say, it is not remarkable nor even worthy of adulation that the Dutch should attain such high proficiency in English - were it to be the converse, yes, that merits kudos. The Dutch are not some super linguistic geniuses as a whole. English is the least complex European language, and is the result of creolization between invading Vikings then conquering Normans... Sorry, Dutchfolk, but y'all aren't geniuses. Try learning Korean en masse then we'll be talking.
I think the Scandinavian languages are pretty close to English simplicity. Those languages have two grammatical genders (some Norwegian dialects have three) compared to one in English. However, they don't have a progressive tense unlike English and they don't conjugate verbs at all. Not even in the third person singular. The verb to be isn't even conjugated either. Verbs remain the same for all personal pronouns. That's why I consider those languages similar in simplicity.
The most important thing in life is knowledge of foreign languages! Thanks to foreign languages you can realize all your dreams and realize your grandiose ambitions! I would like to recommend all the practices of Yuriy Ivantsiv ''Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language". This book will be an indispensable helper, a handbook for every person who studies a foreign language! This book contains invaluable tips, questions and answers, and solutions to problems faced by anyone who studies a foreign language! Knowledge is power! And knowledge of foreign languages is your power multiplied by many times! Success to all in self-development!
My favorite movie ever: Schatjes! 1 en 2
Casey says Hi
you gotta ask for water from a water tap and not from a brand, you litterly aks: "can I get some tap water pls?" if you don't there gonna think you mean a brand like Spa.
Did you have to learn dutch to go to medial school there?
It would be totes super cool if you made a video about how exactly you got into dutch med school as an American
> I'm afraid I might have cancer That's rough, buddy
This video started with her wanting Dutch people to stop speaking English to her, DUS waarom zijn alle comments hier in het Engels?! Cool video! (Wait, was that Dutch... or English...I'm lost...)
Lol who cares about pretending to be dutch. Thank goodness I'm brown. I don't have to worry about these kind of things in Europe and i can focus on learning the lovely language 🤩🥰
You speak very well! I can hardly tell you are foreigner
it's really true when dutchies switch to English once they detect lil bit of accent lolol
Try to listen to drs. P. A swiss singing in dutch, and funny too.
Ik wil ook een zeekoe als huisdier.
Hahaha....funny story and very well told.....If you ever consider a job in the acting arena.....go for it !! :-)
4:30 yea, thats the most important one, just ask us to keep speaking Dutch. But don`t be afraid to ask if you don`t know a word, we can just explain that word or sentence and then switch back to Dutch. We really appreciate the effort when people are truly trying to learn the Dutch language, opposed to people that have lived here for 15 years and still don`t get past "goodmorgjen"
