Drivers eye after scenic work
This drivers eye video shows the work I have done in the scenery department.
I have used photographs of local warehouses as pictures away from the railway, for backdrop and also a modified version, to give me a 3 dimensional warehouse close in to the railway, from pictures of a single side of the warehouise.
If yo are interested in finding this particular warehous se the time markers for:-
50 -60 second in
2.min 30 sec
7.50-8.15
9.10-9.15
10.07-10.20and last 5 seconds
Cheers Josh.

    Hello I can see what you are doing here, it’s looks quite good, but I have a question. The paper clip section going into the points bar is slightly higher than the imitation rail to sleeper securing bolts, will your trains mis this? I am a novice, big time. I have recently started this hobby and bought the Hornby Flying Scotsman track set. I had to bu6 extra track to make a reasonable set up which was expected. However, I found that any trackside object, be it scenic plants or even track ballast that is as close to the rail as your paper clip, at at the same height, my train hits it and derails, there is a little imitation ‘Thingy’ sticking out from the bottom of the train just below and behind the front buffers. I don’t want to cut it off, but I have seen a few less than complimentary remarks about the Flying Scotsman on small scale set ups.

    • @patrickwalker6039
      @patrickwalker6039 7 місяців тому

      All my paperclip linkages fit into the throw bar OUTSIDE the track and they are well below the top of the rail. If they were higher than the top of the rail they may foul a low hanging part of the train but being below the level of the rail top, and outside the track, nothing will touch them. I recognise that the perfectionist will suggest a brass tube to enclose the rotating paperclip, however I have yet to find fault with any of my linkages and with a touch of black paint, or a felt tip pen, they only show up under close scrutiny. I also mention that I have not yet had to replace any paperclips due to breakage. I have 70 points, all motorised with different types of motor, and all of them utilise the linkage as shown in my video. Good luck with your train set. I point out from experience, that the most critical part of track laying is to get it ALL flat and level.

      @@patrickwalker6039 Hello. It reads like I criticised you, I’m sorry because I had no intention of doing that. I commented on the possibility of the train fouling your clips purely because of the problems I’m having with my set up. Yes you are absolutely correct in that track laying is imperative to the set up. I have now taken on board all I have been told and have read. And have relaid my track for the third time. I still have trouble with the side to side clearance of my Flying Scotsman train engine. It has a 2mm side movement at each wheel causing the front to swing out just over half a track wide. I can live with this by altering my scenery but have discovered the problem causing it to jump off or short out going over the points on a right hand curve. The middle axle has no side to side movement and the gap between wheels is less than both front and rear wheels. The left hand wheel does not touch the rail where the right hand wheel does. Again sorry if I annoyed you, it wasn’t intended.

    TRACK EXPANSION & CONTRACTION. When laying Peco flexitrack, especially if the room temperature is below 15C when laying, you MUST leave a slight 0.5mm to 1mm gap between rail ends to allow for expansion & contraction on very hot days. If you do not, then the track will rip itself out of the ballasted roadbed, and bow. Potentially damaging the plastic sleeper base. To ensure good electrical continuity you need to solder small jumper wires about an inch before the end of a length of track, pass under the baseboard and back up an inch or so the other side of the fishplate/railjoiner. NEVER solder the railjoiners to the rails. Use a very small pair of modellers pliers to squeeze the railjoiners slightly BEFORE sliding them onto the rails, to ensure a tight fit. Remembering to leave a slight gap between rail ends for expansion.

    • @patrickwalker6039
      @patrickwalker6039 9 місяців тому

      Thanks for your valued comment. There is always a difference between what one knows is best practice and what one is actually prepared to do. I have taken the liberty of dropping one pair of wires at each alternate rail join where I have soldered the two lengths together at the fish plate. 98% of my points are electrofrog and I have three connection droppers at each point and use separate switches to feed the frogs. I will admit to using the wire at hand for most of my section wiring, this being generally too thin, and do experience some slight speed changes on various sections. However the slow speed control I am able to replicate, running long passenger trains into the station, gives me great satisfaction, and I also get a deal of pleasure from locating faults, be they electrical or mechanical, as they occur.

    Wow Patrick, that is one awesome layout you have there. You have managed to cram so much into the area you have, I think it is great. Amazed by your train cam. I managed to get hold of a small tube camera which I will set on a wagon chassis. Nothing as involved as yours, just a simple on and off button to record, no screen picture, just a chip which you download onto the PC and see what you have got. I do like the idea of being able to watch what you are recoding at the time though.

      I am not a photographer. I just take the webcam out of the box and plug it in. This is a new usb webcam, but I am recording on an older 32 bit desktop that I have upgraded to windows 10. The next thing I will try is recording through a 64 bit windows 10 computer and then comparing the footage to ribbon connected microcam and also a repurposed drone camera that I still have to mount and connect. The latest drivers eye recordings on my homepage are taken with my most recent drone camera, a Hawkeye firefly split cam. I am installing monitor screens to give views of the model railway as the trains run. When I tire of this development I may return to making the scenery more acceptable.

    Hi Patrick - That was absolutely fascinating, especially when you started doing the platform tops. Given me a lot of ideas as to how to do mine thankyou. My platforms will date back to the 1950's so no yellow lines on mine. In fact they had the white line, backed by slabs and then tarmac. Fortunately although my platforms are very long they are all straight ones, phew. I was recently told the reason for the drainage ditch in the centre of platforms or slightly back on the side platforms is so that they slope inwards from the platform edge. This was because there was a train accident whereby a pram or trolley rolled onto the tracks and this prevents it. Now looking forwards to seeing you put all your hard work together. I have now watched all your videos in sequence and thoroughly enjoyed them. You have a superb train room, I am quite envious. Regards Chris

    I've used this idea to manually control turnouts on my N scale layout. However, I use similar diameter spring wire, rather than paper clips, which I think are too malleable to last in this application. I'm surprised the idea hasn't become much more popular since it seems so much more efficient than the usual flop back and forth approach.

    • @richarddrum9970

      I have 71 Points in total. 17 are H+M twin coil motors. I have 13 crossovers where 1 motor drives two points and 7 pairs of points, operated by a single switch, that feed both ends of a loop. There are still about 10 motor driven threaded rod motors that I will replace with servo drives as and when they give trouble. Without pulling up all my sections of scenery and buildings to check, I think I have used about 25 servos so far with various control. The latest conversion I made to a crossover that was driven by a threaded rod motor using a PCB board with cutouts for switching was simply to use one of the cheap servos that had failed, with the clever electronics cut out, to replace the motor drive and threaded rod, still keeping the PCB with cutouts for switching, the servo is plenty strong enough to drive the linkage that was getting a bit stiff..

    I have a couple of these H&M motors Patrick, how do you find their operation? Do they self shut off at the end of the travel or are they solenoids?

    • @patrickwalker6039
      @patrickwalker6039 Рік тому

      I use momentary pushes to operate the twin solenoids and they do not stick on. With careful adjustment to the linkage via the paperclips I introduce a little spring or delay in the motion to soften the bang at the end of travel.

  • @paredding
    @paredding 3 роки тому

    Same principle as Fulgurex motors Patrick and it's a very fiddly business (ask me how I know). Key factors are the drilled hole needs to be as perfect to the vertical as possible and FX use brass tubes for the hole inside which the rod runs to minimise the rod movement. The FX motors are rack and pinion so the rod swing needs to be in keeping with the point blade swing radius. Then you have the rod length (under baseboard) to match the point motor (its 20mm) and bend the arms at 90 deg like you have to clip into the Fx motor drive bar. Rather that follow the Fx instructions, its actually easier to pack the motor at 20mm away from the board and make two 90 deg bends in the wire rather than guessing the length and cutting the rod as there is no going back. Sharp 90 bends at each point where it passes through the board are critical. Like I said, its very fiddly, so have now replaced many with Cobalts but TBH, the installation wasnt that much easier (screwing up into the baseboard a particular PITA. Cheers BTW - I tried both installs alongside the track like you, and in the centre of the rail and the latter works better, though I have no idea why. Addendum. Here is a link to a pic I posted in RMweb (polystyrene base pic). www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/2943-fulgurex-motorpoint-travel/
