Over The Hill Mountain Biking
United Kingdom
Приєднався 3 лис 2020
Hello my name is Tony and my channel 'Over The Hill Mountain Biking' is aimed primarily but not exclusively at us riders over the age of 50. All ages are welcome of course, but if you are looking for videos featuring big jumps and ludicrous speeds you're looking at the wrong channel haha. The routes will range from very easy to very hard, so there will be something for all abilities. My videos feature routes at trail centres as well as 'proper' mountain bike routes out in the wilds. Most routes will be in the north of England and southern Scotland, but I will hopefully venture further afield in due course.
Whinlatter Red Descent - Over The Hill Mountain Biking
I recently met up with an old friend that I hadn't seen in a few years and we decided to do the red route at Whinlatter. This is just the north loop descent. I was also trying out my new camera. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, which I have to say, is excellent!

Mabie Forest Descender Bender - Over The Hill Mountain Biking

Descender Bender is a wonderful flowy section of the red route at Mabie Forest near to Dumfries in south west Scotland. Part of the famous 7 stanes trail centres. It features a couple of 'wall of death' style high bends that add to the overall fun descent. #mountainbiking #7stanes #mtb Hello my name is Tony and my channel is called 'Over The Hill Mountain Biking', and yes that's a play on words...
Great Asby Scar - Over The Hill Mountain Biking
Переглядів 993 місяці тому
You would be forgiven for thinking Great Asby Scar and surrounding area were in the Yorkshire Dales, but it is in fact in Cumbria (Westmorland) Narrow lanes and Limestone outcrops typify this ride. Never too technical, never too steep, this is a very pleasant ride. The only section I didn't like too much was riding through the fields around Asby, and the dozens of gates to open and close. But a...
Hartside From Kirkoswald - Over The Hill Mountain Biking

I'd only ever ridden up Hartside on my road bike many years ago. This was the first time offroad as far as I can remember. I didn't want a difficult ride as it was my first time riding after busting my ribs up in Innerleithen a few weeks ago. I started the ride from Kirkoswald just to make the route a bit longer, but you could start closer to Gamblesby and make it shorter. There will always be ...
Innerleithen Minch Moor Descent - Over The Hill Mountain Biking

I didn't have a great ending to my day at Innerleithen trail centre. I crashed on a simple drop off and bust my ribs, hitting the trail and rolling down the hillside. Also half the trails were closed with diversions due to forestry work and storm damage. The trails I did ride were good, mind you there are some big drop offs that you'll need to be aware of though. I chose Innerleithen as I didn'...

Grizedale and Parkamoor Shorter Version Plus A Black Route
Переглядів 1796 місяців тому
A couple of videos ago I did the classic Grizedale and Parkamoor route. This is basically the same route at the beginning and the end, but with an easier, shorter middle section. On this version you missout on a fantastic descent, but you also miss out on a lung bursting climb. Also the track from Low Parkamoor to Satterthwaite is excellent, so it's a well worthy route. Give it a gander! As usu...
Garburn Pass - Over The Hill Mountain Biking
Переглядів 2076 місяців тому
The Garburn Pass is another classic Lakeland ride. The pass itself is hard, steep, rough, loose and techy and quite a challenge. The rest of the ride is shear pleasure. Starting and ending at Staveley, mid point between Kendal and Windermere. The Kentmere fells are a delight on bike or foot, and well worth a visit. I forgot to mention in the video that the Garmin and Strava links are listed bel...
Grizedale And Parkamoor - Over The Hill Mountain Biking
Переглядів 1757 місяців тому
Grizedale and Parkamoor is a classic Lakeland ride. I first rode this route in the late 80's and the last time was before I moved to France, probably late 90's. Nowadays we can utilise part of the North Face red trail to make it more entertaining. It's not an easy route, quite rocky with long steep climbs, but great fun with superb downhills that seem to go on forever. Unfortunately I went wron...
Loweswater and Lorton - Over The Hill Mountain Biking
Переглядів 2548 місяців тому
I never thought I'd get to finish this ride. I abandoned the route twice, due to bad weather and a slit tyre. Schwalbe tyres are too soft in my opinion. The 'Big Betty' might be good for mud, but clearly not Lakeland rocks! I returned to my trusted Maxxis Minion to finish the ride. This is a seriously scenic ride in a quieter corner of the Lake District. Because I rode it in two separate rides ...
Hexhamshire Common - Over The Hill Mountain Biking
Переглядів 3129 місяців тому
In this video I finally get to ride Hexhamshire Common. This is where I started to ride before Christmas when I had my heart attack. Essentially a moorland ride, it becomes quite hard and technical in its latter sections. Quite long at 33kms, and my 540wh battery very nearly ran out of power. There's a fair amount of climbing too, at just under 810m. Anyway I managed the ride without any health...

The latter part of 2023 wasn't good to me. In August I had an accident at work, and just before Christmas, I had a heart attack whilst riding my mountain bike making a video for the channel. I'm glad to say that around 6 weeks later I felt well enough to get back out on my bike and do a short ride. Actually shorter than expected due to storm damage, but it didn't matter as it just felt great to...

Hamsterley Forest is situated in County Durham, not too far from Barnard Castle, made famous by Dominic Cummings 'testing his eyesight' haha. I can't rate this trail centre highly enough. As I say in the video there's something for everyone. Blue, red and black trails. Danny Hart's Descend Bike Park, walking and horse riding trails and even a cafe at the trailhead. Well worth a visit. #mountain...
Langdale Lollop! - Over The Hill Mountain Biking

I'm calling this ride the Langdale Lollop, mainly because I couldn't think of any other name to call it! It follows some awesome tracks in the heart of The Lakes. Rocky lanes, open fells and through Hodge Close quarry. The weather was miserable when I rode it, but it was still fun. Just watch out for vehicles on the very narrow windy road from Great Langdale to Little Langdale, as I nearly got ...

Like the footage pal keep it up. Thinking of starting a channel myself and joining the community on UA-cam. Maybe local is whinlatter down the road where I pushing for fast times etc what do you use a go pro or dji osmo ?
Thanks, my local trail centres are Whinlatter and Newcastleton. All my footage is taken on the original Osmo Action. My latest video was shot on the new Osmo Action 5 Pro
@ brilliant! I think I’ll go for the osmo then. Been messing around with the software and it’s pretty good and seems fairly easy to pick up. Hopefully see you on the trail sometime !!!
In my humble opinion, the DJI has always been better all round than the Gopro. Gopro has always been better in low light, but now the new Osmo 5 has a larger sensor and is as good in my opinion. Plus if you ever need it, the Osmo has a night function that blows the Gopro out of the water. Go check the comparison videos on UA-cam
Tell you what !...that looks queer flaysome... I'd have done about 200 yards by the time you finished the route..have you speeded up the footage?? You know some time ago i said that i was going to walk up the Ingleby Incline in the Cleveland Hills.. Well...did it on Tuesday gone and what a stunning spot. The climb up is 1 in 5 for a mile so nowt for you but I'd be blowing through me arse bu the end of it...10 /12 stunning miles of former mineral railway to Rosedale via Blakey Ridge all of it hugging valley tops I know you did a race up there about 1987 from Great Broughton Keep up the good work son...enjoy watching your exertions !! .
Thanks Mike. Yes that was my first ever mountain bike race. No the footage wasn't sped up, I do know the descent quite well though
Im watching this on my phone over some pretty sketchy wifi, and the camera quality looks very good!! (Even if some of Whinlatter is very dark!)
Yes parts of Whinlatter are very dark. I shot it in D-log and colourised it in Davinci Resolve
Think I’ll have to revisit this route, did it last summer & had a brilliant time even though I was on a regular MTB
It's a great ride. A short route, but with amazing views
Nice work. Were you on a hardtail or full suspenion?
Thank you. Full suspension, but a hardtail is perfectly fine for Newcastleton
Good edit, you've managed to make not the most technical ride you've done very watchable. I think we have similar riding and video making skills!😂
Many thanks
It's top class round there.. technically part of Yorkshire Dales NP for last 6/7 years ..called Westmorland dales to keep it's identity but scenery similar Good ride marra mate
Thanks bud
Did this back in the 90's as part of the C2C without the detour. Good view.
Yes some of it is part of the C2C
steep climbs and big puddles makes for a great ride out Thanks Tony
The steep climbe were fine, but those huge puddles were way too deep for an ebike. I almost submurged my motor at one point!!
Just done this ride today, found it very tough in parts
Well done, yes that final descent is a right bugger
My step dad was talking about going down here to do the bike routes or whatever you call them, do you know which is easiest?
There is a blue route, which would be the easiest
Hoping to do this ride Friday weather permitting 🤞, can’t wait to give it a go..
It's a short route but a pleasant one. If you're starting from Maggie's Bridge carpark, arrive early as it is very small and fills up quickly. There is also limited parking along the shore of Loweswater. Enjoy!
Thanks for the reply, travelling over 2hrs so won't be able to get there early, hopefully we can get on... @@overthehillmountainbiking
@@mdlfc1973 like I said, if not there is limited parking balong the lake shore road
No worries my friend… thx for all the info and hopefully it will go smoothly.
Got the ride done today, it was great thx so much, slightly different route at the beginning into Lorton, less road. Highly recommended to anyone at any level
Hi, what sort of travel do you ride?
I have a YT Decoy 29. 150 up front and 145 rear. It's enough for me
Ooft! nasty OTB moment good to see youre ok - been years since I last rode Minch Moor at Innerleithen its a fun trail to ride down, like you say a lot of the trails are closed with forest work some ones I used to enjoy riding havent been reopned in a long time, hopefully trail builders can fix at some point, thanks for sharing! 😁🤙
Thanks. Not actually OTB, more like a sideways fall and landed on my chest. It was a week ago today and I'm back in work, but it's still quite painful. The forest work area was due to reopen end of July. The storm damage area didn't have a date unfortunately
Excellent flow trail there at Hamsterley Forest, looks like there are a low more trails judging by trailforks, ideal for a trail centre day out, thanks for sharing! 😁🤙
There are tons of trails for every ability. Even four cross and downhill trails thanks to Danny Hart, but not ones I will be riding haha
love Hammers
Yes it's great trail centre. I might make a video riding the black trail sometime
That was fantastic, stunning scenery and great to hear your commentary too. 👍
Why thank you mi dear. Thanks for watching. You must visit sometime
Lovely view from the top reminded me of the time I was passing Loch Long on the 3 lochs way recently, very similar. Have had my fair share of scratches and cuts near various thorn bushes , trees and nettles stingy buggers lol Nice bit of mtb single tracks there as well good mix of different stuff and good weather thanks for sharing! 😁🤙
Thanks Gary, yeah the slightest scratch from undergrowth or scrape from my pedals and I bleed like buggery due to the blood thinners I'm on since my heart attack. Only on them for a year thankfully
We did today I was on my Cotic hardtail which took some hanging onto, it was more washed out than the previous year and a bit like potato alley with rocks and boulders everywhere. Arms were done by the time I reached the bottom but what fun.
Yes I know what you mean by potato alley. The bike was going anywhere I didn't want it to go and my hands were on fire from braking at the bottom
Glad you enjoyed Garburn, and you got a good weather day for it too🙂
Yes the only decent day of the bank holiday
Nice one looks class no done that one yet you done nan bield
I may have done it years ago, I just can't remember. The track over to Haweswater from Sadgill looks doable, but the track up to Nan Bield past Small Water looks like a major hike-a-bike and I don't fancy lugging an ebike up there haha
Yeah, well, that looked a bit rough in parts. Lovely scenery mind you Didn't see you down Devonshire Walk last Thursday!!! Looked a bit harum scarum after the rains like Keep up the good work marra😊
Thanks @michaelnichol4326. Aye it was flooded along with the railway line.
A great mix of techy trails and scenic and techy singletrack shows off some great highlights of Grizedale and Parkamoor mountain bike riding, love giving tech trails a go - usually get stuck on the uphill trails but fun trying none the less 😂Thanks for sharing! 😁🤙
Many thanks
That looked hard going, would love to give it go, but not sure I'd be brave enough tbh. Excellent ride from you though Tony..
Thank you. Big climbs and gnarly descents plus great views make this a real classic
Good lad !...that went from gay smooth to rather bumpy quickly Years since I've been to the "valley of the swine" Thought you were doing this one a few weeks back but got thwarted by the weather? Good video ... I'd be ower flayt !!!
Thanks Mike yes I'd been meaning to do it for a while, but storm damage had blocked some of the bridleways I think
Just began to watch this video, hat’s off to you my friend, quality effort. Which trail centre was this?
Many thanks. It was at Newcastleton. It was officially closed due to storm damage. I think it still is as of today
Thanks for that, shame if it still is. You did well to get back on so soon.. just got back out yesterday myself after a 3yr forced absence, felt good to get out there..
Sorry to hear of your forced absence, but glad you're back on the bike again
@@overthehillmountainbikingit’s all good now thanks, made me get back out and live again so taking the positives.. sorry to hear about yourself, but I see it’s not stopped you. Great mentality fella..
Looked like fun I love that part of West Cumberland and miss it You're seck a lucky lad Tony !
Cheers Mick
Great ride, looks like a grand day out.. New to the channel could you point me towards finding this route, Mrs and I would love to try it. New to E-mtb just waiting for our bike's from Monster..
Many thanks for the sub. I started the ride at Maggie's Bridge carpark which is close to the south eastern end of Loweswater. You can also park alongside Loweswater if the small carpark is full. You can find the route description in the content below the video. Sorry I normally add Strava and Garmin links, but as this was ridden in two seperate rides that's not possible. Enjoy!
@@overthehillmountainbiking Your welcome on the sub, think I've worked out the route was it about 13/14 mile? Just created it on Garmin connect to find my Garmin no longer works. May be a new one needed.. Many thanks
Great video, thank you! I gravel bike and wondered if I could maybe push myself that little bit further. I do have a mountain bike too :) was into mountain biking (reds) years ago but got scared. A lot more confident on my bike since solo cycling the past 5 years
Thank you. Yes I would take a gravel bike on this route if I had one. There's nothing too rocky or too steep. Give it a go and let me know how you get on
Terrific weather for riding in Loweswater the route really takes in the amaing scenery always enjoy getting out in the hills, thanks for sharing! 😁🤙
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching
That on my back door literally , such a shame they come alone and changes the whole landscape and ruined some really good tracks :(
Not sure what you mean, it was a fun route, I enjoyed it
@@overthehillmountainbiking The forestry people been out there and taken most of the trees down back of dent where they was some amazing tracks :(
@@psvialli ah OK I haven't been back since that ride. I knew there had been some major felling in the forests round there. Maybe that's been extended.
Great ride not done that one for a while should get out and do that one again forgot how much fun that one is :)
Yeah it's a great ride, just don't have the drama punctures and crashes I had haha
nice ride out that one Tony and yeah schwalbe tyes are no good for rocks cost me the best part of aride in Scotland
Thank you. I'm glad it's not just me who thinks Schwalbe tyres are crap! The casing seems too soft, and I'd chosen the trail compound
Nice moorland trail. 👍🏻Bloody hell Tony. Love your positive outlook. Also love your channel description. I'm now in my 60's so my crazy days are over. No more jumps for me just cross country biking with the odd visit or two riding Trail Centres. A very surreal moment returning to the scene of your unexpected heart attack! Wishing you good health and all the very best for the future. From Big Stoozer in Scotland (New Sub).
Many thanks. I've just turned 60 and it's e-bikes for me from now on! Thanks for the sub
Good morning brother. I am back-tracking.. I missed this one. Beep Beep. Get out of the way guys.. Love the colors of the leaves. A lot of folks at 15:10. Thanks for sharing brother . Sandee
Thank you for watching Sandee
Great to hear you're keeping better, looked liked a rough ride through some boggy conditions well done 👍
Thanks 👍
Hi brother. Great to see you. You look wonderful!!! Cute hat. I didn't know that it happened while you were riding. Glad that your health is doing better. Awesome views. Happy riding. Sandee
Hi Sandee and thanks for watching
That last descent was brilliant 5+ years ago then it seemed to get ripped up badly in a short time. Definitely wouldn't go near it if damp. Probably still bad in the dry these days 😢 There are some good paths on the moors. If it's forecast 10mph then it will be 40mph out there! 😅
Yes it was a very frustrating descent. There were different tracks mind you. Maybe I just picked the worst! I totally agree regarding the wind. Great area though
Nice one Tony!! Old Isaac was a tea seller and Methodist preacher man, carrying on his trade in the pennine mining villages of NE Cumberland and SW Northumberland.. Nice work if you don't mind a hike here and there Well done marra mate..good to see you back to rude health. Muckle xx
@@michaelnichol4326 Cheers pal. Interesting to hear about Isaac ☺

Hey brother. Glad to see you riding again. Blessings & good health to you. Sorry that the trail is closed. That tree wanted to keep you out for sure. BTW, after hearing about your heart attack, John (Cooking Around the World) suggested that we dedicate one month's collab to Heart Healthy Dishes. If I remember clearly, he too had a heart attack sometime last year. Let me know if you want in. Sandee
Many thanks Sandee. I didn't know that John had a heart attack. I won't make a video, but I will support you all as always. Happy cooking sis 😀
@@overthehillmountainbiking No worries. We appreciate you. Sending hugs. Sandee
Good to see your ok Tony. Riding frees themind and find your sole Keep it going
Thank you, I'm not letting a pesky heart attack stop my cycling 😀
Great video thanks. I had a plan to ride this but clockwise which would you think would be the best way?
Thank you. If you ride it the same way as me, the descent is more technical than the other way round. Depends on how you like your downhills 🙂
Hi Tony, Great video of the track to Monty's cottage! What e-mtb do you ride? Was impressed with how quiet and capable it was on some really shi**y sections! Thanks, Dave 👍
Hi Dave and thanks for the compliment. I ride a YT Decoy 29. It has the EP8 motor. Never had any issues with it. The new versions have a 720wh battery. Mine has a 540wh one. I'm at the far end of a very long waiting list for the 720wh battery. In the meantime the 540wh is enough for all but the longest rides
Don't do the full red Tony!!! Park at the grove, then head straight up to Poltys and do all 5 trails, from there go up to Section 13 etc then up to Pikes Teeth and after 2 wheels it spits you out ready for an easy roll to the car. All thriller, no filler!! You can of course start at the visitors centre but then you have to do the Grove Link to get all the way back
I'm sure there are other more exciting routes to link up the best fed sections along with blacks, and that may be a video for the future. However this was just to show the full red route. I fancy doing the blacks next time I go
I've met many people at the top of Poltys complaining about the long slog to get there following the red route, and that long climb up the horrible hill to Danny Harts was the main reason I got a ebike in the first place! Next time you go have a look at the skills loop (if its open), Pikes Teeth and Route 666 are definitely black routes, but the Grove Link is a nice cruise to start or finish your ride. Good to see you doing the bombhole on Special K. It took me months to build up to that, and now it's the only way I go!
Yes it's a slog up to the top of Danny's climb. I could do it in boost, but stick to trail mode for a bit of a workout 😃 The only black I've ridden was Boneshaker, which wasn't too bad. Yeah first time riding the Bombhole. Looks worse than it is, like you I will always ride it now
Another good video though, I enjoy your content and can definitely relate to your style of riding!!
Many thanks Bob. If you ever fancy a ride out somewhere give me a shout

Yeah quite unfit and suffering with sinus troubles unfortunately
Nice video! I’ve not ridden Newcastleton. That red looks quite flowy. Looking to take my wife somewhere for her first red and that seems to fit the bill.
Thanks, it's a fun trail. It's not technical at all. You park in the village square and ride up through an outward bound centre to get to it. There's a lot of forest road riding between the good sections though. It's never busy, unlike some trail centres. Enjoy
Hey brother. Just checking in on your channel. I wish I knew how to ride a bike.. The views from your journeys are lovely ... Peaceful! I love the trees at 7:15 onward. Thanks so much for sharing. Sandee
Hi Sandee @MyAjjisKitchen thanks for visiting. I haven't been very mobile lately as I had a nasty accident at work, with 5 weeks off as a result. It still hasn't healed fully and I'm still in a fair bit of pain at times. So no riding bikes for now unfortunately 😬 I hope you are well and good luck with the Portuguese collaboration
Interesting to see Kielder forest trials reminds me a bit of one of my locals Callendar Estate in Falkirk, nice trails well ridden and thanks for sharing 😁🤙
