    I think you have mistake the author with somebody else. Brian Doyle was born in NYC and lived in Portland for a long time. He died in 2017 when he was turning 60. He has no direct connections to Canada.

    Amazing! For the movie JoJo Rabbit, how would you apply Winnicott's theory of transitional objects? Would JoJo's imaginary friend Hitler, be the transitional object?

    • @johntornay419
      @johntornay419 Рік тому

      A transitional object has to be a real-world possession of the child's. Hitler in Jojo Rabbit is Jojo's paternal introject, which not knowing his real father, he constructs from his perception of the social ideal of an archetypal father figure in Nazi Germany, i,e, Hitler (albeit Hitler as he is imagined by a little boy). This is of course delusional both on the part of Jojo, and on the part of the society in which he is embedded. As well, his mother is reperesented to him via an ersatz persona, which she maintains for her and Jojo's protection, since she is active in the resistance. In other words, his maternal introject also conforms to a social ideal of Nazi Germany. When the social delusion starts to break down, and concurrently Jojo learns the truth about his mother, and he is forced to confront the reality, via Elsa, that the Nazi ideology is flawed, his relation to his mother fundamentally changes, and he rejects the paternal introject. Ultimately, JOjo's transition is not that of Winnicott's--separation individuation--but rather the transition from a socially constructed superego to a self-constructed one. However, for an interpretation of the film in terms of object relations, I would probably look to Fairbairn and the construction of a central ego through libidinal and anti-libidinal sub-ego states.

    What about an imaginary friend as an object?

    • @mapleyoga8116
      @mapleyoga8116 3 роки тому

      Dear Raquel, Thank you for your question! By definition, Winnicott's idea of transitional object is that of a material object (teddy or blanket are the typical objects of choice, but it can be something small and seemingly insignificant to the adult eyes). The child believes the material object possesses qualities of something like an imaginary friend. So Winnie the Pooh is a classical example from literature.

  • @raquelbuchanan7958
    @raquelbuchanan7958 3 роки тому

    Very interesting....around 5:50 you mention children testing an object as “real and not real to others”....what does this mean? Could you explain more?

    • @mapleyoga8116
      @mapleyoga8116 3 роки тому

      The testing of what is real and not real is the process of transitioning from an entirely imaginary world of childhood (no doubt about the reality of imaginary friends, talking toys, etc.) towards a psychical space where the border between the self and the other is tested. The resolution of this testing is such that one begins to appreciate other people's mental spaces and take into account how others see the world around. This helps to establish some understanding of the difference between fantasy and reality. Hope this helps!

      And? The universe is unimaginably, in every sense of the word, enormous. It also has a level of uniformity that precludes the notion of life being entirely unique to the planet Earth. The emergence of life is a natural phenomenon by all accounts, and such a natural phenomenon is likely to happen elsewhere in the universe. As it stands currently, the notion of "god" is entirely a philosophical question if you're being honest. Even with an order of magnitude more understanding of the origins of the cosmos than we have now, there's always someone who could just say, "Oh yeah, well god came before that and set all this into motion." It's kind of a waste of time to argue until someone shows something concrete. And I could just counter and say that their "god" is simply an extremely advanced alien intelligence that humans are incapable of understanding. Again, philosophy at best.

      Spoilers: God is your awareness of being. Space and time emerge from consciousness. God's children are finite self-concepts of the universal awareness. Now that I've told you the truth, I'm allowed to use my imagination to create whatever world I want, and you can't complain, because all you had to do was combine your imagination with faith to do the same, but most of you won't. Most of you can't even believe in a toilet when you need to go in a crowded restroom. Most of you can't even believe in a parking space when you're running late and need to park.
