It suggests that something has "deviled" or troubled a person, causing ongoing frustration or distress. Within the context of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and its literature, the term "bedevilments" has a more specific and meaningful connotation. In the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous-particularly on page 52 of the fourth edition-there’s a passage that highlights several common struggles faced by individuals before achieving spiritual relief through the program. These struggles are often collectively referred to as the “bedevilments.” They include conditions such as: - Having trouble with personal relationships. - Being unable to control emotional responses. - Feeling prey to misery and depression. - Struggling to earn a living or maintain stability. - Feeling of uselessness. - Experiencing fear in many aspects of life. - Being unhappy and discontented. - Feeling unable to be of real help to others. In the AA framework, recognizing these bedevilments can serve as an indicator that one might benefit from the program’s 12-Step spiritual solution. Overcoming these bedevilments involves a spiritual awakening, personal inventory, and ongoing efforts toward honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness-all integral components of recovery as described in the Big Book.
