It’s an apt tune for the time of year. I actually enjoyed the release era but more so for tracks like I didn’t get where I am today. No idea why it wasn’t released as a single. Tunes for new year. I’m not scared (don’t butcher the second half please !!), the forgotten child, I made my excuses and left & To the Shore. I was thinking of which other tracks work on the piano and it’s obvious that many don’t. For example, Paninaro 😊😊😊😊😊

Sounds great to me anyway. Another of my favourites for sure. I was wondering, have you ever listened to any of the other existing PSB piano covers on UA-cam ? Someone like coversart ? Seems to be more and more new piano covers of PSB tracks all the time and right now I reckon you’re right up there. Hope you keep it up (btw if you haven’t .. check out coversarts version of twenty something or brick England or love is a bourgeois construct). Not half bad either. Us pet heads are blessed to have you both. Bravo

Yup, I have - in fact, coversart was probably part of the reason I chose to do this myself (I can't entirely remember why, though - I randomly recorded myself playing Rent, and then suddenly it turned into this massive project... 😅) Coversart is great, though, and he also has the advantage of having lots of lovely real pianos at his disposal... I'm not at all jealous though... 😁. I've been looking at others too, and it's great there's so many out there.

Brilliant - thank you, and you're very welcome! Pleased you enjoyed it. That's really interesting. I'd say their compositions vary in difficulty level. This one is in a trickier key, but the chords aren't massively complex here, particularly in the verse. The melody line is quite tricky, though, and doesn't always follow or match the notes in the chords. On the whole, though, I'd say I disagree with that critic - a lot of their songs have some pretty complicated and sophisticated chord progressions (e.g. Wiedersehen, the chorus of Don Juan, the chorus of Liberation, the middle eight of A new bohemia or all of The Secret of Happiness), and even when they go for their tried-and-tested Cm-Ab-Bb or Am-F-G type progressions, there are clever little vocal melodies on top of them that aren't always predictable. They're also brilliant at colouring their chords with sevenths, sixths, suspended notes, ninths, etc. all of which really change their character. I was trying to work out part of the verse progression in The theatre, and there was a chord I just couldn't match with the record. In the end, it was just the simple addition of a seventh note to the chord, but it was perfectly chosen for that moment of the song, and really affects the mood. Connected to this, the synth overlays/orchestral arrangements really augment their chord progressions, but I don't think they'd sound as powerful or emotional if the chord progressions themselves weren't already strong. All that said, I'd be more than happy to think that I flatter their originals a little (rather than flatten)... 😄

Ha, indeed! That seems to be an example of a melody that doesn't obviously fit over the chords (and yet does), and there's definitely some diminished chords going on in there too! I've been working on Secret of Happiness, and even though someone has kindly transcribed it on Ultimate Guitar, it's got some crazy chords in it and is going to take more time....
