Spirals and giants galor! We explore the wonderful and terrible worlds of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki and the excellent Attack on Titan. While very different in approach and scope, there are some very interesting parallels to explore and are otherwise but exemplary in their storytelling and overall effect.

Fun fact contacts helps how about just a brief description serious people need a f****** description
Our species doesn't evolve very quickly...
Thanks again for inviting me onto your podcast!
Really enjoyed this. "Between Two Fires" is a great read. Interesting creation myth, Pokémon. Nice catch, Sam! Another sponsorship WIN! And, yeah, lets talk Cathars sometime!
Great episode! I learned some things too. Well done, guys. Interesting how the Arthur story-type still tracks. These are timeless human stories... the Bible, the Greek myths of Troy, Achilles, etc. Good stuff, SIRS.
Really enjoyed The Three Musketeers casting. Fun. I kinda hate that the AI Bot questions were interesting. The poignancy of the ending was well conveyed. Nicely done.
Should I leave it unsaid, too? xD What does the Spacejockey from Alien look like? ELEPHANT whoops I said it ;P Great episode!
Hilarious! Entertaining and engaging!
Great episode, guys! Hilarious, informative, and engaging!
Excellent. This is probably as close as we'll get to a Rereading Wolfe episode on Wizard Knight for at least a decade 😂, so thanks for getting this collab together. In a lot of ways, I found Wizard Knight more mystifying and intriguing than New Sun, immediately started rereading it after finishing it the first time. Definitely had the experience of "I can't wait to finish this so I can start rereading and figure out what's actually going on"
I noticed recently how genius it is to create new gods and introduce them as a hidden force behind everything. Miura had it from Hellraiser but aren't they actually just Greek/Egyptian/Norse gods? Causality = Ananke. It says a lot about our times: We are so out of touch with higher forces, we think we are in control, we think we are the apex species, and being suddenly introduced to gods in a fiction story is a profound surprise. Well it certainly got me into asking more closely: WTF is a god and WTF is capital G God?
My favorite quote so far…”If you can pleasure read The Odyssey, you can please read The Silmarillion.” I love this quote, but….reading The Silmarillion is like reading Leviticus.😂😂😂😂
Such a great talk and some really cool insights. Personally, I thought a lot of Ocarina of Time while reading this since there is a book for young Able and one for adult Able. And with Gene it would make so much sense to contrast the two and maybe even have something cyclical going on but not quite seeing it yet, maybe next read through. Also, what's your fav Shakespeare story? :)
Thanks for the kind words! I love the Zelda connection! Favorite Shakespeare is probably always going to be a tie between Hamlet and Henry V. I grew up on the Brannagh versions of both of those. But I am also very partial to The Scottish Play, but that is mostly because I met my wife when we were both apprentices performing that show with the Nashville Shakespeare Festival all the way back in 2006.
@@StevBerryessa Thanks, I'll check those out! I've been reading a bunch of Euripides plays recently so I'm kind of in love with plays rn :)
“The first read of a Wolfe novel is painful.” So true. Every subsequent read is increasingly pleasurable though.
I've followed three threads that might be worth considering in the Wizard Knight. 1) The relationship between Mythgarthr and America - it seems that Wolfe was fascinated by the idea of a Germanic chivalric society without Christianity. If that is what Mythgarthr is, Able/Art is the injection of a Christian kid from America to supply the needed Christian element to correct the tyranny of Arnthor. The Real Able is then, in a novel that was never written, just hinted at in the text, the injection of a needed heroic element into America. 2) Able/Art does occupy the roles of Arthur, Merlin, and the Knights of the Round Table; the way he embodies all the knights is by playing the role of Gawain, who becomes the Green Knight - the very title Able comes to be known by in the story. He is the knight who is tested, and becomes the Wizard Knight who tests other knights. He even remembers being the Green Knight testing Gawain, literally, in his time among the Overcyns, and references this again when coming to the fight with Setr in The Wizard. 3) Giants and dragons are behind most of the problems in Celidon. The Osterlings worship dragons, the Aelf and their corrupt worship are driven by dragons, Arnthor is the product of a dragon. Draconic incursions interfere with the primary duties of human beings, to worship the Overcyns and fight the giants.
That was great! I would love to get snapchats from Scott 😂
Hello! I havent had a chance to listen past the first twenty minutes but here is a link to the writeup. As far as America, in the opening chapters of The Knight Able says he feels like he is all mixed up with another little girl, and later that memories are jumbled like books on the wrong shelf. The memories of America are from his connection to mother, the umbilical cord Parka gives him, and her memories. However, this is all a Jungian dream sent to his mother after the fact, so that she can learn about him (the angel says his mother never knew him, and sends the dream so that, in a way, she and the surviving son can get to know him). In the place of lost loves he learns why he was named Able (Able to be born despite a hard pregnancy), though that event was plagued with things like double headed turtles. In the final chapter he admits, after killing the Cloud dragon that is actually Cloud, the perseverance of the horse, that he is not Able (to be born). When he ponders that he is just a dream in Disiri's mind, he is approaching the truth, as being mixed up with the little girl is both sperm and egg mixing but also his close mixing with mother, living through her and then his brother. docs.google.com/document/d/1CQKj5iyETzrcdS0gq1ZOpug1o-OPH6-X4Y-onvxdRBk/edit?usp=drivesdk
Thanks for sharing the write up! Will be digging in for sure and this will absolutely inform our upcoming episode on the Wizard.
Couple of notes on the conversation- Able’s vow to use no sword but Eterne and his vow to never kill Garsecg are identical in both the earnestness and sense of honor they adhere to- as well as Able’s not very subtle, brute force workarounds as he realizes how impractical the vows are in real life. Also the roof of the tower is a garden of Eden allegory complete with forbidden fruit (Durian) and so yeah in a sense the tower roof is the beginning of a new world for garsecg even if not a literal launchpad for invasion (but Arnthor’s dragon dna certainly makes that a serious proposition I think)
The garden of eden parallel is really clear and well noted and maybe in some sense Able is a symbol of THAT Able (and always telling everyone to say "may" instead of "can/Cain").
I loved every minute of this, thank you guys! Contrary to popular belief I found the Wizard to be wildly more entertaining than the knight so I'm patiently waiting for that one :) So many insights into how the wolrd works. Also love Morcaine as just a WILD take on the princess archetype. James nice catch on the Ossir Osiris connection! I still didn't do my reread (into Latro rn) but there might be some Egyptian Kamutef ("bull of his mother") connection, a title of a god (sometimes Min, sometimes Ptah) who fathers himself with his own mother. At least that'S what I'll be looking for who knows if I'll find it lol. Well, thanks again 🙏
Able's admiration for Ravd is like (Eschenbach's) Parsival's fascination with the three knights he encounters.
I've been reading this! Parzival is wonderful.
@@daniel_frazier It's fantastic. My favorite Grail narrative.
Great conversation. Going to crack open The Wizard Knight again.
Aw sweet. Favorite new podcast guys interviewing one of my favorite X follows!
Re: adaptation, a psychedelic animated version of Wizard Knight might be really great. So many scenes that could be so vividly animated in a cool style. Able swimming, Garsecg, Disiri, all the locations. With a great artist or team of artists it could be amazing.
After the beaver discussion, read up on otters... they're actual psychos. Great show. Thanks for turning me on to Berserk. I may go in for a Saruman Special coif. Appreciate the lead.
I love Rereading Wolfe Podcast! You guys have dope taste. Love the funny adds ;) Miura was inspired by Book of the New Sun? Amazing! and that makes a lot of sense. What I find most striking about Berserk, and we get this in BotNS and Twin peaks as well, is the mystery of the powers that work behind the scene and seem unbeatable by what are incredibly overpowered protagonists. These works also all feature underworld journeys and a lot of symbolism and how we subconsciously understand the world. Isn't it just a privilege to be able to at least feel your way through what lies beyond the physical? I get a deep sense of gratitude when I think of these authors. Is it all just a feast for the soul? xD Glad you cover Berserk guys, thank you <3
Thanks for engaging! I totally can see huge parallels between Twin Peaks and Berserk. I don't think it's for nothing that I'm drawn to both of those worlds. Because of the differences in vibe I had never made that connection before.
I never noticed before I wrote it as well :)
Rolling or trilling the r's is specified in Appendix E. Yeah it's overdone in the series.
Fun show! Thoughts: 1) Tarzan has poisoned arrows... I'm giving it to Tarzan. But I'm totally bias. 2) Much more approachable bracket discussion, guys. Way better than ESPN. Thanks.
Conan for the win! I would like to see Tarzan vs Conan.
“We need swords.” I smell prospective sponsor opportunities.
Such serious pondering. 😝 Carry on. You all look so nice today. Dressed up for the battle.
thank you!!!
Great episode! Looking forward to Rings of Power. I'm enjoying their take on the Tolkien mythos. Y'all get the BEST sponsors. C-BABIES! Hahaha! Sheesh, Lord Dunsany... what a slacker. But sounds like a great read. Thanks! Enjoyed it!
I think you were looking for the term “denovosans”
Denisovans?
** But hey, Joey the grizzly bear is racking up some serious frequent flyer miles. ** WhichWitch... Hahaha! That would be a great resource. But their paywall requires herbs and eyes-of-newt... ** Missed Sam! ** Another fun and informative episode. I really enjoy the podcast, guys. Thanks.
I wonder if there is a moment when Pilum will no longer be indie publishing. (Our editor in chief grew up in a land, not unlike Tennessee, where local bands towered over the national landscape). Ah well. That's the demon under whom we labor, I guess. Thanks so much for the shout out!
Great episode, great interview. I'll look forward to reading "Shagduk"! Thanks for the podcast.
Traditional dialogue between two FW Dudes: "Yeah. Yesterday I was in Dallas [to do something]" "Sorry about that!"
haha!
Gandalf CLEP testing out of Hogwarts courses.😂
And it turns out that witches do control the universities. Lieber knew.
He's definetly onto something...if only he had a twitter
The static on the radio metaphor brings up for me Jim White's song of the same name. Worth a listen.
"Reading that book is what kick-started me reading again" One could not get a better compliment.
Flair! Or flare? Great conversation! Also, "Like sitting and watching robots play," is the best description of Woody Allen I've ever heard.
TOTALLY!
I love Scott so much. He is such an amazing soul. Thank you for this interview. Thank you Scott for regaling us with in depth tales of your journey. This was awesome!
Thank you so much! ♥
Without Jack Vance’s magic system, D&D would be a very different game.
I’d never noticed before, but you’re right, Lloyd Alexander really isn’t talked about as being part of “the canon”.
Give “The Black Cauldron” another shot. I understand why you’d wince at it, as a fan of the books, but it’s a fine piece of animation.
I appreciate the mentioning of Last Unicorn, the new generation misses out and the book is even better than the movie. Also, Saruman can speak German and I had the privilege of hearing that as a kid. Also the author Peter beagle did the screenplay for the first lord of the rings adaptation which later influenced Peter Jackson. Also the animators of the Last Unicorn movie later went to Gibli studios. Okay, thank you 🙏
Wow, thats some really cool insight / trivia things. We had no Idea about the Last Unicorn, Gibli connection!
Love ur content. Only a few gems on yt are actually contributing in making art related interviews . I m a aspiring artist to and lovely watching video. Thankyou for this great vid Keep going, keep growing ❤

"Let multiPOV therapy be the light at the end of your tunnel and the beginning of another whole entirely different and possibly not better tunnel." 😂😂😂
Allright guys, HUGE Berserk fan myself, glad that came up. Devil Daggers is a great little game for anyone who wants to experience the Eclipse himself (Sounds super appealing, I know). It also goes very well with Tool or Nile, if you need something really heavy. These are my two musical legs I'm standing on in my mind, okay, that doesn't make any sense, idk how to prose that one. Thanks for the great episode! <3
As the resident metalhead, I approve this message.
Berserk is so so good
@@UndertowersPodcast It's one of those things where you keep wondering how he did it. Also, it led me to Book of the new Sun actually, cause I saw some of Skull Knight in Vodalus in the first chapter ;)
Love this episode. There is a lovecraft story called the green meadow. Both the wolfe books you talked about could be seen as long forms of that story. Enjoy ❤
We def gotta check that out!
Sam/Bilbo has Target brand 60 SPF. 😂

Hahaha! Multi-POV Therapy! Clever. Fun lists. Enjoyed it.
