Переглядів 1,3 тис.3 роки тому
Fort Saint Anthony (Portuguese: Forte de Santo António; Dutch: Fort Sint Anthony) was a fort built by the Portuguese in 1515 near the town of Axim, in what is now Ghana. In 1642, the Dutch captured the fort and subsequently made it part of the Dutch Gold Coast. The Dutch expanded the fort considerably before they turned it over, with the rest of their colony, to the British in 1872. The fort is...

A TRIP TO FORT LIJDZAAMHEID (PATIENCE) IN APAM | Slavery
Переглядів 1,3 тис.5 років тому
The fort was first built as a stone trading lodge in 1697 at the request of the King of Acron, with whom the Dutch had a treaty, and which was situated between the kingdoms of Fante and Agona, with whom the British had a treaty. The executives of the Dutch West India Company were quite wary to establish a fort in an area with minimal trade, and only consented on the condition that it would be b...

Axim proper nowadays has three Omanhene (not Chiefs) as Nsein is also part of Axim. According to records Axim at one time extended from the Ankobra to Ezile (Akwidaa - and i know today that is Ahanta West). It was in 1912 under an inquiry by the colonial secretary Francis Crowther that it was divided in to three with Upper Axim and Nsein becoming independent stools. Sounds like you may come from Tɔlanu? This fort was not intially built for slavery. Long before then its most important export was gold. Axim was one of the main points for export of gold. Its location having a natural harbour for the older ships which had smaller beams and draughts so they could easily anchor there and is one reason it became a prime location. Along with its proximity to Ankobra which was one of the earliest sources of gold. Barbot suggested that Ankobra in fact was subject to Axim. I am not sure where exactly Ankobra was, but the state was along the river it is eponymous with and was north west of Axim maybe around Apataim? The island Beboawusi is one of four tiny islands off the coast of Axim. They were not built but are natural features. I think he means the lighthouse rather but even that i would think is older than 1955. It could be the time of construction of the lighthouse standing there today and not the first one.

I used to go with tourists into the castle as a little boy,, my real understanding was it was a slave castle because it also had the gate of no return,if you know the place the castle is exactly at the end of upper town, and the sea was full of rocks and can recall two occasions of ship wrecks, so the light house served the purpose of warning passing ships, there we're were actually two other smaller islands but bobowasi was far bigger,.. Sanwuma was the name of the Ankobra town where the River Ankobra entered the sea, in time past it had no bridge but a pontoon and boats it was not part of Axim because it had its own ruler, the nearest fishing village from Axim side was called Anwunla Suazu, which was inhabited.by fishing mostly from Volta region.. The Akuzu beach fishermen were. Nzimas, Alize were mixed up with Ga and Nzimas from lower town, and Apewusika were predominantly Fante who had their own chief...

@@huistiepersol2430 the Portuguese who built the fort have numerous accounts of gold being exported from Axim. Prior to enslaved people being a major activity, the export of gold was the main export. Things can be adapted and changed over time. The fort was built in 1515 and replaced a trading post. Bosman also relates that the gold produced at 'Axim' was amongst the finest. It is a fort not a castle, built to withstand attacks. As Basil Davidson pointed out note that the canons were pointed seaward (of just about every fort & castle along Ghana's coast) as the main threat was from other european nations. Again exemplified in that in 1642 the Dutch drove the Portuguese out of Axim. The Ankobra is a long river and Sanwoma is not the only village along its banks. Nor is it a location in which gold was mined, as cited the source of gold was further inland along the Ankobra. Sanwoma is on the western bank of Ankobra and part of Nzema proper and subject to one of the Amanhene of Nzema. However 'subject to' in this instance means Suzerainty was held over the local ruler by the King of Axim at one time but it does not refer to Sanwoma but a different location. I am quoting from several sources and documents i have read or have access to. The purpose of all lighthouses is to serve as a warning to shipping of some form of hazard, rocks, sandbanks, shallow waters. Axim lighthouse is no exception and still has that function today.

The tour guide @6:38 talks about native Americans and American soldiers involved in the slave trade in the Gold Coast; is this information from a dream he had or from hallucinogens? I can't take anything he said seriously! As journalists, please take time to validate your sources and apply some common sense in your reporting. I have not even made it to the @10:00 and I'm already embarrassed for the production team of this documentary.
