My Gaming and Game Dev Setup
Thought I'd share my desk setup that I use for gaming and game dev before I leave for the next few months!
A few miscellaneous notes:
- I like using my secondary monitor in portrait mode for Slack, Spotify, Discord, version control software, and a few game engine windows
- my Anne Pro 2 keyboard has linear Gateron black switches. I haven't tried clicky switches but I think I'd like them more

Hark! Hail! THUNDER! After quite the hiatus, I'm back with a vlog of my time at TennoCon 2024! It was so much fun, and such a great way to end my 2nd internship/co-op with DE. Soon, I'll be heading to Korea for a 1-week vacation before straight going to Singapore for exchange at the National University of Singapore, so look out for some videos of that! Do as Steve said and play Warframe and Sou...

The last day of lectures in my 3A term as a computer science student at the University of Waterloo! I hope you enjoy :D This term was a chaotic one and I'm glad to finally be done! I had some amazing profs this term, but midterm and final exams were brutal, and my grades have seen an all time low. I played intramural hockey, intramural soccer, club tennis, and SERVE volleyball this term but tho...

I got an offer through WaterlooWorks! But it wasn't quite what I expected... so I'm going back to DE! They were nice enough to wait for Cycle 2 to end before I made my decision, and flexible with my co-op term duration since my exchange term starts a month earlier than a typical study term. I didn't want to take the offer I received because I wasn't able to ask any questions in the interview to...

    • @GUWhy
      @GUWhy 2 місяці тому

      learning C# would be a good start for game dev, it's the standard language in unity and not much harder to learn than python.

    • @_leisdays
      @_leisdays 2 місяці тому

      I agree with @GUWhy about learning C#, especially if you already if you already know a bit of coding. Python is a popular language to start with otherwise since it's the easiest to pick up, and Godot is getting popular and it uses a similar language. C++ is also a good one, which I primarily use. Another option is jumping straight into game dev using tutorials for Unity, but you'll probably need to understand the code side more at some point anyway

    When you were brought onboard did you have to go through a training process to familiarize yourself with the tools used and how their code is structured? I am curious to know what you needed to know to start resolving issues as mentioned such as the slinky spawn animation and the vfx issue on client side?

    • @_leisdays
      @_leisdays 8 місяців тому

      There wasn't much of a formal training process. Just reading a short doc on code formatting and conventions and then learning as you fix bugs. It's mostly a matter of getting a feel for the codebase hands-on, how to find relevant code or data, and a lot of playing around. I also asked to shadow a few other devs to see how they approach bugs and how they use tools

      Hey! If you haven't programmed before and want to start with the basics, learning C or Python in an introductory course might be helpful. Object-oriented programming in C++ or C# is what you'll probably end up using in game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine. If you want to get low-level and build from scratch rather than use a game engine, you can use OpenGL or Vulkan for your own graphics. There are lots of good online courses, videos, and tutorials for all of these. Good luck!

      That's awesome! There are some good free online courses to get you started, like Harvard CS50. The problem sets are a bit challenging, but the lectures and content are great to give you a good foundation. There are also some good videos and resources on object-oriented programming, and making your own game in Unity would be helpful. It's good to jump straight into Unity and make your own game, learning as you go or following a tutorial. Then it's about working on your resume, cover letter, and interviewing prep as per usual. I'll try to make videos about my resume and cover letter soon!
