Big Snow Flakes Coming Down on the BNSF in Amarillo.
In November 2004 Amarillo was hit with heavy snow. The snow flakes were unusually large and fluffy for Amarillo. Usually snow in Amarillo, when we get it, is more like sleet and is blown by high winds so that it come down horizontally. This snow however was quite different.

Amarillo was born when the Fort Worth & Denver and Santa Fe Railroads crossed paths in the Texas Panhandle. Even though the Fort Worth & Denver and Santa Fe Railroads no longer exist, Amarillo is still and large hub of railroad activity for the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroads. Some of the footage in this video from the personal collection of Sam D. Teague, has never bee...

    The asphalt is new to me. About how much ballast ended up between the asphalt and the bottom of the ties?

    • @BNSFAmarillo

    • @anb7408
      @anb7408 4 місяці тому

      The bottom layer of ballast actually sinks into the asphalt a bit from the weight above, further securing the roadbed in place. Plus, it greatly improves water drainage! It’s expensive, but saves on maintenance costs down the road.

    How do they level the rails with the asphalt so unlevel?

    • @BNSFAmarillo
      @BNSFAmarillo 4 місяці тому

      @@BNSFAmarillo ahh so does it then push ballast under when it raises it up and removes some when it lowers it? I love watching videos of those giant railing laying machines. I am just a casual rail fan, wish I had more time to get out and see more stuff

    • @glennfoster2423
      @glennfoster2423 4 місяці тому

      @@BNSFAmarillo I am familiar with a tamper. That machine picks up the rail assembly (rails, ties, attachments like plates, spikes or clips), and once aligned to the required tangent or curve, tamps the ballast to secure everything. But what machine can "push the rail down."?

    • @BNSFAmarillo
      @BNSFAmarillo 4 місяці тому

      The machine has the ability to vibrate the ballast while holding the track assembly. It can also push ballast back underneath that has escaped on each side. Hopefully we will be able to provide videos of the things you miss. I will try to get some video of the track laying process and also the rail grinding train.

    • @BNSFAmarillo
      @BNSFAmarillo 4 місяці тому

      I'm not an expert on the track laying process, but from what I have seen its the same machine. It doesn't so much push it down but it vibrates the ballast which allows the heavy track assembly to settle down into proper position. Thanks so much for watching our channel and your feedback!

      Thanks for the feedback! How did you find out the particulars of the equipment?

    • @dcmkris
      @dcmkris 8 місяців тому

      A few different ways. First is the unit number is on the front right & rear left corner of the vehicle. For example on this train the M1070 Heavy Equipment Transporters (HD Semi-Trucks) are marked 4BSB 68CSSB. I know most of the units but Wikipedia has entries for every Division of the US Army which will list all the Brigades assigned to that Division & its subordinate units. The DOD runs a website called DVIDS, plus the US Army does press releases for most major deployments or training events (Not all but most) & most units have individual Facebook or "X" accounts which share info. I will also do UA-cam searches on RR, Loco # to see if I can find other videos to try and locate a train on its journey. One other note while all vehicles are supposed to be marked you will see quite a few not marked for a variety of different reasons. If you catch another and have questions feel free to tag me or email me using my user name here at yahoo and I will do my best to ID it.@@BNSFAmarillo

      I should also note that I can look at most trains and determine from the equipment on the train what type of unit it came from. That with location can sometimes help me narrow down fairly good where it came from or who it belongs to without the bumper numbers.@@BNSFAmarillo
