Elk River Blues
Here's a little bit of Elk River Blues in G...the fiddle is in G "Sawmill," a.k.a. GDGD. I meant to do a different recording of this one, just not thrilled with what I have here, but time just hurries by and there seems to be less and less opportunities to sit down and play...so...I decided to go ahead with this one. I had done. In the recording I had knocked my bow into my coffee cup toward the end, which messed things up, but I decided what the heck...leave it and go on...but then for whatever reason, the iMovie cut the very last note...just flat-out cut it short. So I re imported into the movie about six times and finally got frustrated enough to learn a new thing: how to fade out with the audio...so I tried that and if the end sounds funky like the way they squirmed their way outta 50s popular hits...yeah, I'm sorta doing the same thing here because the note just cut out all of a sudden is very bothersome, more bothersome than the 50s style of fading out of a song instead of figuring another way out...lol. So it's kinda strange. Also had trouble getting the photos in the order I'd wanted...but it's just a conglomeration of morning walks we've taken with our little dogs. Some day I might learn how to do this...lol...but for now...the best I can get. The story goes that Elk River Blues was composed by WV fiddler, Ernie Carpenter...in the spirit of lamenting over his home and community, soon to be destroyed for creation of a lake in the area.

Well this song has been with me in one form or another since I can remember. I haven't really played it much because it has been done so much I'm just not sure what to do with it...but anyway it was just on my mind today, and that recording studio setup is just waitin' for me to get down there and try something. So here it is...everything in standard tuning, including the groundhog choir. We wa...

Well here's some messin' around since I got my audio issues resolved, thanks to my fiddling friend, Rich. So by this point I can record on the MacBook and hear both the tracks recorded and the one actually recording at the time. That's pretty cool. So, being sort of low on photos at the moment, I decided my new groundhog "recording studio" in operation would make a good shot, then another shot ...

I still have some issues in using the presonus with the MacBook...it works really well and it's very convenient to use, but I'm not smart enough to figure out the easy wa...

I gotta say right off the bat I do not know this tune...not sure if I played it anywhere near how it's supposed to sound, or if I shouldn't have repeated the B part or if I should have repeated the A part too. Mainly, I was in a struggle to use my new setup, and I'm the biggest technological idiot on the planet...so this was just a challenge. All new and different setup. I had a hard time just ...

Well once again I don't really have photos having anything to do with the song. But these turkeys have been hanging around gobbling up what they can find that falls from our bird feeders, so I figured they need to be put into a UA-cam. So here they are. Hoping to illustrate the rhythmic difference between the clawhammer "Bumdiddy" technique and the double thumbing, a.k.a. "Boom-a-lack-a" technique. Besides, or maybe because of those rhythmic differences, it seems to me the double thumbing allows more hammer-on and pull-off opportunities, plus the opportunity...

Everything about oldtime fiddle tunes seems governed by what part of the country you learned it in - even the name, who you learned it from, what key you learned it in, how many A-parts and how many B-parts there are, and even which is the A-part and which is the B-part. I learned this in D, but have played it in G. Also, the way I learned it the part you played first is my A-part (which I repeat, so 16 measures) and then your second part is my B-part (which, I also repeat, so 16 measures on that also for a total of 32 measures). I’m aware that sometimes the real oldtimey way to play a tune means playing the B-part first. I’m not a contra dancer and don’t know enough about music so I don’t know if playing 24 measures instead of 32 makes it “crooked” for the dancers? It is still a multiple of 8 and isn’t like adding or subtracting a measure in one part or changing the time signature in a measure or two, but I don’t know enough about this to know that answer. However it shakes out, I love this tune and I enjoy your playing, thank you.

@@groundhogpeggy Thank you for the encouragement! No, not on my channel. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever posted anything I do. My musical journey has been slow and confused and halted/restarted and always skill-set challenged. I’m one of those people who was standing behind the door when the musical gifts were being distributed - except for having an okay ear, - plus I did not really pick up an instrument until I was 60. I’ve fooled around on the mandolin (lousy), but have had much more luck with the mountain dulcimer. Oldtime fiddle tunes are my thing although, the older I get the slower I get. I can still keep up with a lot of fiddlers, but not at Clifftop break-neck speeds. Keep posting/love your work!
