Cheap and free food in Phuket Old Town, Thailand. Famous pedestrian street. Vegetarian Festival time
Phuket Vegetarian festival or Nine Emperor Gods Festival celebrates the Chinese community's belief that abstinence from meat and various stimulants will help them obtain good health and peace of mind.
In these days you can buy without meat very tasty dishes on affordable price or get them absolutely free on Chinese Buddhist temple's territories.
The “Jay” in the Thai language means vegetarian. For the dishes in name of which followed by the word, Jay indicates that that dish is made without any animal products. Most popular in Thai cuisine in these days are:
- Mee Pad Jay is very popular fried flat rice noodles or round egg noodles are commonly served with kale during this period.
- Por Pia Tod Jay, which consists of deep-fried spring rolls filled with vegetarian ingredients.
- Yen Ta Fo is the soup that takes on a pink hue from fermented red bean curd seasoning, though meat substitutes replace chicken or pork in its preparation for the duration of the festival.
- Khao Mok Kai. But in Vegetarian Festival period the yellow rice with tofu stands in for the poultry.
- Thin chilled rice noodles come dressed with a curry-like sauce joined by tofu and mushrooms, going by Khanom Jeen Jay.
- Tao Hu Song Kruang is a steamed tofu treat sauteed in a thick Chinese sauce alongside baby corn and carrots.
