Hmmmmmmm---- economic equality and market economic systems is a contradiction. It is an impossibility. It is an impossibility to have a society that is perfect in every way. There will be conflicts about most everything of national importance. In the subject of determining public policy, it is necessary to understand that it is impossible to get 100 % of the voters to agree on a particular solution to a problem. Waiting until you get 100% agreement guarantees that there will never be a solution implemented. In a democracy, the majority of voters (50% +1 or,more) will have to be the deciding factor as to what public policy will be on a particular subject. Freedom of expression (speech, press, etc.) has to exist so that citizens can have access to all points of view on every subject. It is realitively easy to express these terms, compared to actually implementing them in actual practice.

Love this question and it's one I've often thought about. I think an interesting case to consider in connection with this question is that of Gibran Khalil Gibran. Here's an Arab author who has written in both Arabic and English, within similar time frames, and has works translated into both languages. The themes of his writing are similar in both languages, but I've always found that his work in Arabic has a more fiery, even angry quality, whereas the English is more "centered". I speak 4 languages and feel that I have a different disposition in each 🤷🏻‍♀️

Enjoying these thoughts on what a democracy is really. I found John Dewey’s ‘The Public and Its Problems’ really illuminating on which view of democracy has the most free and socially just consequences.

Very instructive to be reminded of how much Arabic offered freedom of movement as well as cultural access across vast time and area. The role of Latin was shrinking as Western nation-states grew.

The isolative effects of monolingualism are substantial, but the converse, that polylinguists are automatically broadminded is only partly true.

"Apartheid can best be understood as a system of prolonged and cruel discriminatory treatment by one racial group of members of another with the intention to control the second racial group." The terrorist state of Israel is without any legal doubt an apartheid regime.

AIPAC runs the show in the US. Both political parties have been bought and paid for! It's a travesty but AIPAC tells the White House, Congress & Senate how's it's gonna be. AIPAC control's the State Department. The Pentagon is pro Israel and our upper echelons of our military elites know any position that smells of fairness will be targeted and reframed and presented as you know what!

@Sharon N Some interesting points, but by highlighting attacking attacks on Jews in Israel, you ignore the thousands of Palestinians murdered by Israeli troops. How many children were massacred by Israel? A lot more than the Israeli children killed by Palestinian forces. Of course more of the past crimes of the zionists are now coming to light. There is also attempts to either minimise or completely reject the ethnic cleansing of the Nakba. You further ignore the fact that people living under occupation have a right to resist and also the fact that if you profit from the occupation, you have no right to expect protection from those living under that brutal occupation. Those living under the Nazi occupation of Europe did the same, and we don't designate them as terrorists. You further ignore the concentration camp conditions endured by the residents of Gaza. The concept of evicting Palestinians because they haven't paid rent is ludicrous, because it would be unthinkable to evict Jewish settlers for the same reason. Legal foundation or not, the fact that only Jews have a right of return is a clear sign of discrimination, and yet further evidence of apartheid. Of course there are other signs, including the use of live ammunition on peaceful protestors, and the regular application of the 'shoot to kill' policy against protesting Palestinian youths. This is not applied to Jewish citizens who protest. Unfortunately Israel has been able to perpetrate its lies for so long, but the advent of social media means that its crimes are now laid bare. You can't make apartheid look pretty, and attempting to minimise the Amnesty report - which was thoroughly researched and wouldn't have been published unless they were confident of the facts - just makes you sound desperate. An organisation with 10 million members cannot be dismissed that easily. Let's remember that B'TSelem has already made the claim as have others. You're wasting a lot of time and energy defending the indefensible. Despite its claims, Israel is not a state of all those living under its rule

I bet we will hear the same victimhood narrative from the Palestinians for another 100 years, as they always go back and cry for the "great catastrophe" instead of caring for their future generations giving them hope. Israel has moved on and is a respectful nation where Israeli citizens can enter more than 140 countries, including 10 Muslim countries. what did the Palestinians do for the last 100 years? teach hatred, teach victimhood, teach BS propaganda, and achieved nothing! more of the Arab nations are siding with Israel, trading with Israel and establishing peace treaties. Palestinians are living in 1948. good luck with that.
