Great detective short story by Dashiell Hammett

Oh this one is good. Sure, there's a bunch of underdeveloped side characters, but there is a solid core of six characters who are all distinct. The story has twists and turns, there's a big face off and it ends with a rough n tumble duel in the desert, and a battle of wits in the end. I also like Painless as a character, that he is no longer in his prime, his physical actions miss their mark but he has the experience to match.

Honestly, Hammet's style grows on me.
