I never had a dog get car sick until I got Sooner, our 17 lb, 1 yr old, Cavapoo. As soon as I put him in the backseat of the car he starts shaking and whining incessantly. We have already had two instances of a 2hr trip each way where he got sick multiple times. I even tried Dramamine twice before the last trip and it didn't seem to phase him. He is naturally hyper with guests and jumping in the house, which we are working on. At this stage, what is the best way to break him into vehicle travel?

Hi all, just note that motion sickness is very real in dogs and it can be hard to tell what is the root cause sometimes, so a tip that I put into practise with my other dog Vindi who is anxious but also gets actual motion sickness is to stop and pull over regularly so he can get out and run around, which helps stops the motion element, and I always look out for when ever he starts to fidget or pant as that is usually the first sign he is not feeling well, so I try to pull over as soon as possible for that. My dog associates the car with going to the park, or other enjoyable activities with me. His anxiety comes from being stuck in traffic on the highway. And even more panic when inside containment of any kind. He has a level 6 heart murmur. One of these tips really help us.

SO???? It takes Real time to slowly get the dog more comfortable with car rides. That said I'm guessing then that the dog stays home until this is accomplished? Which defeats most of the plans because you are putting them in Kennels? While YOU are on the road?
