    I love this video. I have always wondered why I am petrified and cringe whenever I am forced into conversations about money and I guess I can probably thank my Scottish mother. You demystified that for me. It is seriously almost impossible to do so but it is really important to understand the financial aspects of life.

    Hi! Thanks for this video, I hadn't really thought about people actually finding me through my website, feels quite silly of me 😅 I guess also though there's a lot of competition that way, like an art director/publisher looking for children's book illustration, would find a lot of children's book illustrators via a Google search? I've sent out quite a few emails in the past, and it's not something I enjoy, but would do again, maybe in combination with trying to strengthen my search terms etc. on my website. :) I've been feeling quite lost lately with how to get more clients and what to focus on, maybe strengthening my portfolio or reaching out to more potential clients? And so I feel like I've not been doing anything 😓 Anyway thanks again for the video, it's food for thought!

      Step 1: be v v kind to yourself. 1 year post partum is still early days! Step 2: just pay attention to what kind of illustration work you see out in the wild and LOVE. Any time you love something, that’s a big clue 👀 Good luck! And pls squish your baby / don’t feel like there’s any rush (cos there isn’t)

    I'm a graphic designer but this popped up in my feed. I've been trying to get a freelance thing going before I have to get another in-house or agency job. I've been reaching out to local agencies and things but not hearing too much. Can I ask what kind of hit rate you get for emails to bookings? It's quite draining making high effort emails but not hearing back. Anyway, the video was definitely a great motivation and the tip about considering my potential client's thought process is really insightful.

    • @katiedraws
      @katiedraws Місяць тому

      Ahh hello! It all applies to graphic designers too - glad you’re here haha. It’s tricky to say numbers re: hit rate because A: I am notttttt a fan of the pitching method. B: I’m also shite at tracking numbers / working out percentages 🤣 If you’re treating it as part of a rejections challenge, then the more rejections the merrier. Good luck!

    So similar to my experience. I've found consistent part time care is super tricky to find. No family nearby here so we went through a slew of caregivers over the years and that juggle of finding a new, trusted person, melding schedules, ensuring care is engaging and not just a person sitting on their phone, etc. So tough and THE GUILT is real. Nursery/preschool programs are obscenely hard to get into in my city with long waitlists and then the cost is exorbitant. I was paying the same as my mortgage for part-time(!) care for 2 kids last year, this justified my husband cutting his work down to part-time so we could juggle and I could work more this year. Less sickness, more time with Pa, more time in nature - everyone is happier.

    This is really similar to what I’ve done. 0 - 1, my husband and I juggled childcare between us. 1-2 we had a nanny for six hours a week, she was a friend, very similar set up to you guys, 2-3 nursery two days a week, this also coincided with my husband getting a 9 to 5 job, not freelancing anymore, and 3 until now - nursery three days a week. Three days a week is definitely the sweet spot and is working well for us. Don’t feel guilty! It sounds like she’s having a brilliant time at nursery. And you doing something you love for a living makes you a wonderful role model for her.

    Will watch this later! Thanks for sharing. I'm also so curious about parents running businesses alongside children. I currently have employment 4 days a week so I don't have time for my side business at the moment, but I'm curious to know how people do manage their businesses when they don't have childcare. And also would love to see more instances of parents being able to include their children in their work somehow... without it seeming unprofessional. If I can I would really like to do some more freelance work in the future.

    Currently in the middle weighing the merits of switching from comics I draw traditionally, to a fashion illustration career. Ive had to find other ways to get outfit designs for characters / building designs though as Pinterest still has a problem with Big Fashion and Pop Music leeching off illustrators and musicians. I am curious why Im often recommended childrens book illustration. I wrote two middle grade novels, though mainly do adult fiction. ( I found maintaining the atmosphere expected for kidlit hard to maintain, as my genre passion is Dystopian and Paranormal Romance. )

      I dont think you need to get an agent to be a freelance illustrator.All you need to do is create your work ,take a picture of it with your mobile device and send that/those pictures as an email attachment to an email (query letter) to say,a greeting card company to submit your work.I've never heard of illustrators working through agents.

    • @InyasArt

      @@Sharperthanu1 thank you kindly for your reply, that's a wondeful idea and I will give it a go! There are agents that represent illustration artists, especially in book illustration. It's easier to get established that way, although not necessary, but easier. Also if you want to break in as a writer/illustrator, an agent can be a sharp tool to have in order to get published. Of course, it's different for everyone. Thank you for the amazing idea in the reply!

When you want people to sign up for your newsletter and you're putting a giveaway basically behind the paywall of "sign up to get it", how do you do that? Is that manual? Do places like Substack do that or do you have to do some fancy work to do that on your own site?
