Microsquirt Cappuccino Part 5
For the fifth part of wiring in the Microsquirt to our Suzuki Cappuccino we wire in the AEM Wideband o2 Sensor so we can start tuning. Then we calibrate the MAP sensor so the load tables can make a bit more sense. Then we finish up by installing the 4 Port Mac Valve electronic boost controller leaving us with a car ready to tune and drive!
This is part of the series where we will go from a freshly imported Suzuki Cappuccino running the factory 11psi and 60hp to the tire and take it to the limit of the factory turbo with 17psi and a monstrous 80whp :p
I do want to apologize because these videos will be boring to some because of how technical they are, I wish I could make wiring and tuning a little more entertaining, but sadly the only exciting part is power pulls and that is a very small portion of the whole process :)

For the second part of wiring in the Microsquirt to our Suzuki Cappuccino it gets down to the first part of the nitty and gritty of wiring in the ECU. We remove the stock ECU, get the wires happy, and cut all the wires we need and connect them up to the Microsquirt, removing all the wires we don't need from the Microsquirt in the process. Audi TT 3 2 Turbo is Just too Loud

Our Audi TT sounded so good with the HPA DTM Turbo, but it was too quiet. So we cut the downpipes in half and ran 3" all the way back to dual 2.5" tips with a small resonator right before the Y. 3900 Fiero ITB Start up
Переглядів 1,4 тис.7 років тому
This was one of the first start ups before I got all the settings sorted on the Microsquirt. Check out the build: schwamotorsports.com/blogs/previous-builds/1988-pontiac-fiero-coupe-3900-swap
I LOVE IT!! FUUHHCK YEAH👍🏻😀🤘🏻🤘🏻
Maybe someone on here knows, can you put a dash from K.I.T.T car into a fiero.
I have owned over 20 Fiero in my life and used to be part of and do custom work for the Fiero owners club of Michigan. I made a custom Fire lift to lift the body of the car off the ground while leaving the rear sub frame on a caster pallet. The lift was a 3 piece design. Two 4x4x8 by 3/16 wall metal tube for the sides. One piece of 2x6x8 by 3/16 wall tube for the top. The top has two 3x3x6" metal tables welded under each end to slide into the 4x4x8 tubes which become the sides or legs. The bottom of the 4x4x8 legs has a piece of 4x4x5 angle iron centered and welded to them. From the ends of the 4x4 angle iron I welded 2x2x4 metal tube back to the 4x4 legs making a triangle support structure. In the center of the top, the 2x6x8, I carver a notch in the side just big enough to let the loop of a 20k lb tow hook go inside the tube and lock once you pull down on it and welded it in at that point. I then hooked a 5,500 lb manual chain fall to the hook. This setup goes over the back of the Fiero and you simply life the entire rear of the car off the subframe, which is sitting on the castered plallet. Unlike a 4 post hoist, I can use this anywhere because it easily comes apart a for transportation. This lift frame is also handy for taking engines out of boats and boats off trailers. Build it, you be glad you did.
hanks for posting

Oh yeah, I’m a huge fan :) and the fact that they let people use their music is awesome! :)
Those VR6's always sounded really good under hard acceleration.
Yeah, I fear I am too much of a grandma driver I don’t get to hear it at full song too often, plus it’s fast enough at mid throttle and low boost :p
Are we not going to talk about that Fox wagon in the garage?
Yeah that was a friends car, sadly it won’t be getting back on the road anytime soon :(
Best one yet n soothes the soul with that sound!!
Thank you, it’s crazy how similar it sounds yet how different it is, makes the extra effort worth it :)
Hell yea so fukin dope!! I just want that sound on my car is it possible to get that turbo sound on any car?
I've been just stumped with which GM engine would make a good, manual transmission Fiero. I finally gave up on the idea of using a GM engine. They make good engines, but not what I had envisioned. I thought about an Alfa V6 out of a front wheel drive 164, but finding one will be a challenge. And then there is the VR6. Excellent engine mated to an excellent gearbox. Great choice for swap. That narrow angle really helps with the fit. Of course, that intake....has a new set of challenges, especially with a fancy plastic manifold. Good job. This car looks well sorted.
Thanks, yeah and if you went with the simpler 12 valve motor the intake manifold actually fits since the head is a fair bit skinnier. I have I have no regrets with the 24 valve, but I would recommend others go the easier route :p Alfa would be cool too, but finding them in the states really would be tricky!
Any idea where I could find widened front fenders and a rear bumper like that? Is that an se bumper with gt tail lights? Didn't realize you could do that
Sadly I don’t know if anybody makes wider front fenders currently, and the rear bumper is actually a factory 88 fiero Coupe or Formula bumper :)
Where can i find an engine like this ??
The VR6 is actually a very common engine starting production in the early 90s and only recently stop being sold in the states recently. Just about every Volkswagen car has been offered with them as well. Mine specifically is the 2.8l 24 valve model out of a 2004 GTI.
@@schwamotorsports7792 gotcha, so what other engine will it fit, if this one is not available?
You did a fantastic job. It looks great, sounds great and no doubt drives great.
Thank you, it really does :)
We need an update!! Part 6???
Id love to see an how to on this swap
There is a more in-depth video of the build if you have some time :) ua-cam.com/video/OxvoWXVIiZg/v-deo.html
Love this car❤
Thank you :)
How much horsepower did your old turbo 3.4 gm pushrod V6 make ?
Sadly I never ran the virtual dyno on any of the datalogs, but the full turbo kit got moved over to a locals Formula with a hybrid 3.1l block with 3400 heads and a mild cam. He managed 270whp and 380wtrq on e85.
Shame not enough room for a second turbo of the same type. Not a criticism, but I'd have left the quiet turbo alone. As for the intake manifold if it worked, but it's your car. Absolutely love the colour, what is it? Would a standard VR6 swap (as though there is such a thing) without the heavily modified intake and turbo have required any cutting into the boot/trunk? Would an even smaller turbo but two of them fit in? Would 3 even smaller turbos work or even be feasible?
So lots to unpack here :) the color is Lotus Elise Laser Blue, and I love it too :) I would love to go twin or even triple turbo, I have a way to do it in my head with it being twin with a third to come in at higher loads, but not in the fiero :p A smaller turbo would definitely remove the need for cutting the trunk, and I am questioning going smaller for a little more response and torque down low, we will see what happens and I’ll keep everybody updated :)
You did a great job explaining all the builds and where the car is currently. What really impressed me was the courage you had to embark on such a project with no experience and at such a young age.
Thank you, I will totally credit the Fiero community for the ability to get to do an engine swap with no automotive background at 17, they gave all the info needed it was more of a game of researching forum threads to learn everything I could :)
Two words... ENGINE PICS!
Here is a link to my build blog of the car, it gives quite a few pictures. Sadly the motor is no longer set up like that in a Fiero, I will be using the ITB set up on Brunton Stalker(Lotus Seven Replica) in the future though :) schwamotorsports.com/blogs/previous-builds/1988-pontiac-fiero-coupe-3900-swap
What a story! It just got better and better. I love everything about the car. As close to perfect as it can get. It's the 1st VR6 I've seen in a Fiero and I love ot.
Thank you, its been a roller coaster in person, but I wouldn't have it any other way :) I wish I could claim the title to first vr6 Fiero but there is a 12 valve 5 speed NA build in New Jersey done years before I was able to get mine on the road, but hey 1 of 2 isn't too bad :p
Nice build, and your car looks great.
Thank you, its been a journey and I love how the car has turned out :)
You can lock the timing so the ecu isn’t adjusting it by jumping two pins on the test connector. This is how the manual says to read base timing
Not sure on the stock ECU, but once you go with Megasquirt you can lock the timing and adjust it wherever and however you want :)
Huh the instructions on the plug and play microsquirt say to lock the timing so you can correctly measure the base timing. So any adjustment you make via the ecu are off the correct base timing
Oh, in Microsquirt you will want to lock the timing, its part of the ignition settings page. One you have the Microsquirt outputting a locked timing(say 10 degrees), when you check the timing marker with a timing light you will see how much offset is needed in Microsquirt to have the commanded timing and actual timing be the same :)
@@christopherhusta9915 any links to that part of the manual?
In the SX306 service manual from the SCORE website, page 6F-7 under ignition timing step 5 and 6 state "5) Remove monitor coupler cap. 6) Connect D and E terminals of monitor coupler or E to body by using service wire so that ignition timing is fixed on initial one". Step 7 is to check the timing with light and check that it is within spec. That spec coming after step 7 in the manual specifically states "Initial ignition timing (Test switch terminal grounded): 5+/- 1 degree at BTDC (at idle speed)" the Kei Sport pnp instructions on their website say "Ensure that base timing is 5 degrees Jumper pins D and E on the diagnostics connector." That's why I brought it up, that's how I checked my base timing. @@jayboiee7054
Wow, this is definitely one of the most creative engine swaps I’ve ever seen. The VR6 engine is one of my favorites. Very creative thinking for sure. I hope you enjoy it man.🥳🎉🏁🏆
Thank you, I love it, good sounds and great power and you can't argue with the nice gearing spread for the fiero and the little bits of modern-ness that work their way through are a nice bonus :)
It would've been better to see more of the car.
I am sorry about that, I am still learning the UA-cam world and finding ways to get good outside shots, need to get some friends to help with rolling shots :)
Great video. Wasn't over the top and your just a straight up guy. Gained a new subscriber.
Thank you! Thats my goal :) I don't feel I'm over the top and honestly I feel Im a bit too technical and boring, but I know people like my builds, so I love showing them off :)
@schwamotorsports7792 in my opinion? Your spot on. Keep doing as you are.
Always liked the fiero looks and worked at GM when it was released. Couldn't actually do an employee buy until the second year because of the demand. Was a bit of a dub head even then and that wookie sounds sweet. That and the VR5 have the same draw for the same reason. One of the best sounding engines of all time IMHO.
Thats cool that you were working there at the time, and yeah its crazy that the VR motors came out only 3 years after the Fiero ended, and were in the works during production of the Fieros. I do have a vr5 on the shelf to go into a rabbit if I can ever find the time :)
I realize you aren't the one who did the custom widebody, but I was wondering if the black molding is also custom? I'd like to shape my molding to some aftermarket fender flares, but I'm not sure how difficult it'd be.
So the molding is actually 100% stock pieces from the Fiero Store. I think technically the wheel arches are large now than they were shortening the needed length of molding.
@@schwamotorsports7792 I see, thank you for the reply. For my purposes I'm thinking I need to bend them, but they have an aluminum insert. Soooooo, I'll figure it out somehow lol
I don’t think the factory molding has any aluminum inserts. They should just be solid plastic and honestly quite flexible. Now the marker lights are a harder plastic and not bendable, but still plastic, so you might be able to get creative with heat.
@@schwamotorsports7792 I removed the molding I will need to modify thinking they were just plastic. But they had aluminum plates inside of them, I have an 85 non GT. However, I doubt they changed how they made their molding. Do you know if maybe the Fiero Store's moldings are purely plastic?
Oh! You have a ribbed molding car, the smooth molding must be different. All the 84s (base and indy) and the 85s (GTs and base) and the 86 and 87 Sesames and the 86 Base cars had the ribbed molding, I bet thats where the aluminum comes into play.
Hey ! We’re still awaiting Part-2 Forester Sti
Thank you so much for checking in, so sorry I haven't made any progreso just past the 3-4000 mile mark on the swap and on the coldest day of winter popped another head gaskets. I am think the old heads got a little damaged on the first head gasket blowing, and I really should have had them checked out. So right now Im waiting on getting the motor out and heads refreshed before putting it back together, hopefully with a new short block from Subaru :)
Totally bad ass..love it
Thank you, I love it too :p
VW Engine? That's not american
It is, not many inline 6 motors that fit in the bay of a Fiero that are American :p
Do you have a shop??
I do, just a small shop on my property but I do builds out of it, and work with a few other local shops out of their locations for wiring and tuning :)
@@schwamotorsports7792 where are you located? Im interested in a fierro build
The coupe front clip looks so freakin cool on the GT. That's the main issue I've had with the GT is that the nose looks way too long.
Yeah, I love a well done GT, but I just really love the tucked under almost Pantera shape to the bottom half of a coupe, but its hard to argue with the fastback, so we have best of both worlds here :)
Rode in a 88 fiero GT that had a 09 Hyundai 3.3 v6 in it from a 09 Sonata 249 HP was factory rating in those and the automatic trans was also from that same Hyundai. That Sonata swapped fiero could rip off 4.5 second 0 to 60 times an a 13.3 quarter mile at 102. It was at Empire drag track in NY. That little Hyundai 3.3 sounds EXACTLY like a Golf R32
Thats so cool! I knew about the Toyota 3.5l V6 swapped Fiero but I didn't know about a Hyundai swapped one, I need more info! :) are there any videos of the car?
Wow!.. Way cool.. Kudos!//.. Keep it up..
Thank you, I'll do my best :)
Pontiac didnt do the Mera
Are you referring to me calling it a "Pontiac Mera"? Who would you say the automotive manufacturer of the Mera is? Pontiac was the one who got the Cease and Desist from Ferrari about the Mera. And to be honest even though Cars and Concepts built and installed the bodies for Pontiac, its easier to just say "Pontiac Mera" :)
@@schwamotorsports7792 Vehicles that had this bodykit were known as the ‘Fiero Mera’. A company called Corporate Concepts completed the conversion, and none were sold as kits; all Feiro Meras were converted by Corporate Concepts and sold through dealers
How much trouble was it to get the ecu to work with the Fiero dash cluster?
Not too bad actually, Microsquirt outputs a standard tach signal and I’m using a v6 motor and a v6 tach, then I add gm sensors, so it’s a gm coolant temp sensor and if you wanted oil pressure you would use one of those too. As for speedo I am using a full GPS speedometer from Speedhut.
Its a vr6!! Sent wot!! It loves it
Thanks, I have to say I do too :)
They had pretty motor fires 🔥
Are you talking about the few 84s that actually caught fire? This is an 88, from my understanding there are very few 88 Fieros that caught fire. But you have a point, if you love fire, a car in flames would be pretty :)
The 914 in the shop! My first car..
I’ll get to it one of these days and I’ll have atleast a couple videos on it :)
Did this setup ever work?
I guess the short answer is kinda :p I got it working well enough to drive it a few hundred miles but I kept having intake backfires. I removed the manifold and sold that fiero. I now have a Brunton Stalker I am putting a 3900 in and using this intake and I found a seam that wasn’t welded on the intake, so it’s getting a second chance at life and should work much better this time :)
Beautiful build and history presentation. Colleague of mine has a 3800 fiero except it's a turbo 3800. It's on UA-cam. Stock bottom end and it dynod just Uber 700hp to the wheels. Damn impressive. Kick the boost up and show us some numbers bro.
That’s awesome, I know the vr6 can get up there power wise as well, but if I was going to push that I would want to get me some stronger axles, and drop the compression a bit. All I’m hoping for is around 400whp with 15 pounds of boost and I’ll have it on the dyno at the 40th anniversary fiero show coming up July 2023 :)
You have a good feel for that stick shift. Smooth with good rev-matching on the upshifts. It would have been great if you would have just run it Wide Open through three gears once and get the clutch out a little quicker. Where's the boost gauge? That seems like a pretty widely spaced transmission for a 6-speed but I guess it's hard to tell unless I can see both the tack and the speedometer. Some guys that weren't raised on stick shifts never get a feel for it. With that good rev matching I'll bet one of the things that you don't wear out quick is the clutch.
I would love more info ! I’m about to do a north* 4.6 but you might have just hit the pause button for me. I’d love to do the VR6 !
If you’re up for a northstar swap a vr6 swap isn’t too crazy out of your capacity. Coming up with good working shift cables is a bit of a pain, but still very achievable and once done simplifies most of the other unique parts into being “just an engine swap” shoot me an email, schwamotorsports@icloud.com, and I would be happy to talk over any details I didn’t cover in the video :)
I love unusual swaps in FIero's. I've seen a couple K20 swaps too. Would love to see a 2ZZ swap
Having had a turbo 2zz in my Elise, it’s just not enough torque for the weight of a fiero, there are ways to get high rpm motors into Fieros, but the 2zz I fear is just lacking(without a ton of internals work to support good power). Then again, maybe the supercharged set up would be nice, but at 1000lbs heavier than an Elise it’s gonna be a tall order with that little of motor :(
@@schwamotorsports7792 Thanks man. I honestly never realized that. I thought the Fiero was around 2400lb
I saw that Jose Missouri plates. Me too.
Yeah, for how much of a pain Missouri can be on your daily driver licensing the year of manufacturer plates are pretty awesome :)
Badass!!!!! Im a little scared, because i was watching another random Fiero swap video, and in my mind i THOUGHT ... "id do a VR6" ...heres the vid suggested for me. We're all doomed folks.
Hehe we are, but sometimes good ideas are worthy and somebody else already having them doesn’t make them any less good :p
VR6 makes tunes easier than a traditional V6
Very very cool and interesting build!!
Thank you, I try and keep all my builds interesting, can’t just be cookie cutter swaps all the time :p
Can you help me find a engine wiring harness for my 3800 swap. I need plug n play. Thank you if you can help
Sadly don’t know where you can get a plug and play harness but if you could get the car to me I can build a harness for you on the car :)
I love how there's another mid-engined car in the garage!
Eventually will have more than the Fieros and the Elise, the Isetta is technically mid engine too :p
Do you have any spare fiero shells just the body no engine laying around ?
Sadly the only one I have has the front end cut off of it and it’s just for parts.
