    I'm confused about the 32:00 ko explanation. I understand 4 steps for a 4 point swing = 1 point per move. But why was that relevant when calculating the value of the original t10 ko? Why did we count black's territory down to t7 as part of the t10 ko point swing? Would it be ok to just count till s8, meaning black has 3 territory + 1 stone against white having 1 stone, meaning a 5 point total swing, and adding the value of the s8 ko as 50% of the 1 point/move swing, since either side can play there first, so it being a total 5.5 point swing for the t10 ko?

    • @telegraphgo
      @telegraphgo 26 днів тому

      If white wins the ko, we count the whole area down to t7, arriving at white +1 from 1 capture. If black wins the ko, we have to count the same area down to t7. Regarding counting the value of the s8 ko, you count the value of that position, which we know to be literally 0 off the graphic I made. There's no need to do the 50-50 expected gote endgame counting trick, the ko position itself is already countable.

    A slight criticism: your commentary was extremely clear and easy to follow up until you mentioned the beginning of the attack in the center that sealed victory. You waved your hand and said “everything is very clear to me, almost to the point of being boring”, and it was at this point that everything devolved into chaos, but you began to go through the moves very rapidly. To me, fox 5d, the commentary wavered on the edge of incomprehensible from there. It got less and less obvious that black was winning. I think you made a classic mistake that demonstrates how much your proficiency with the game has risen: you’ve forgotten what it’s like to suck, and therefore in this section you forgot how to speak to us lowly plebs. Hope this helps. Love your channel.

    • @mapari00
      @mapari00 Місяць тому

      Thank you for the quick response. Thinking back, I feel like you handled the situation with the quote from the book and the section on managing chaos in your games. There might be some opportunity to preface the section with “if this doesn’t make any sense to you, you’re in good company. Managing this kind of chaos while retaining an adequate understanding of who is ahead takes years of dedicated practice.”

  • @Riokaii
    @Riokaii Місяць тому

    one other way to think of the "waste a move is worth 13 points" is that it is directly related to the value of Komi. Black essentially plays "half" a move ahead for the entirety of the game, and Komi is that value. If komi is 6.5 points, well then a "full" wasted move is double Komi, which is 13 points. Komi of 6.5 slightly favors black, and 7.5 slightly favors white, so the "true" value of the half move advantage is bounded within that range, making the "full" move values somewhere between 13 and 15.

    • @telegraphgo
      @telegraphgo Місяць тому

      yes! you've told this part of the story very well. Did you know many pros believe that a full move should be between 13 and 14 points? I think if I average the opinions of all the strong players I ever asked it should be around 13.4 :D Of course we could never get that precise, but basically, that 6.5 is closer to fair komi than 7.5

    • @Riokaii
      @Riokaii Місяць тому

      @@telegraphgo I think that while 6.5 is probably more numerically fair in terms of point value (more likely to create <2 point wins/losses) I would argue in favor of still using 7.5 for the value of komi because black gets to "dictate" some pace of the game in terms of implicit sente. I think leaning towards numerically favoring white to account for the "cost" of playing 2nd and having to respond to opponent more often and black still able to control more of the direction of how the game plays out, white is less "free" to play the game how they want to in some sense.

    Thanks for sharing, live game commentary is the best and that's what people want the most instead of classes (contrary to what youtubers seem to think). some points about you: - your analysis and description, explanations, of your point of view on the shots are very good and that's why I like watching your videos, - I would have liked you to take the time to analyze the moves at the start of the game (direction of play), and even in the middle of the game, you don't use all your byo-yomi time when you can use it to explain more. - on the other hand, you are too sure of yourself and you judge others a little too negatively. this is not always the case but in this video, the lack of modesty is clear and damaging. A bit painful to watch someone who claims to be superior to others. on the video format: - the analysis of the game is too long compared to the game itself (as much time). Among the lengths: - the first part of the analysis is too long, too much glorification of your moves, 2-5 minutes would have been enough to quickly have your judgment on the few key moves and the turning points of the game. - in the second part of the analysis, I don't know which Katago interface you are using but it could be better to have the score difference displayed on the shots rather than the local gain, - in AI analysis, perhaps spend more time showing the crucial points where the percentage difference grows strongly by showing the (slightly more complete) sequences that the opponent could have chosen. In any case, don't take my criticism too harshly because it's just a few points on which I think you could improve but that doesn't mean that I don't like your videos, on the contrary and thanks for your work!

    Only a month late comment lol, but at 1:43:02 I think k13 is the turning point in the game not because it "makes the game easier" like we all like to do and like you said in your initial review, but it's completing the shape in the proper way and being a thick enough move to make it the best move. It does simplify the game too, but that's more of a bonus for finding the natural move. That group not being thick and having it's shape poked at gave black such nice shape in the center and even managed to kill the corner from it too. AI liking it more and more as it adds playouts is always a sign of good shape to me if it's not a life/death thing, as correct/natural shape is resilient to many deeper variations.

    When I played chess as a kid, there was some point when the game went from playing move by move to planning subtle traps. It's why I enjoy playing and watching go reviews. I think the game ultimately embodies two highly skilled opponents in their effort to dodge and set hair trigger traps. It really reminds me of the minutes I'd stare at a board wondering what I should do next.

    Lee Sedol was like Vicent Van Go. A true artist on the board. We have many great artists since AI, but no art quite so human and beautiful as what Lee made in my opinion.
