Bryan Baker's playing is the wet dream of a 80's shredder. Been a fan since its berklee videos came out. His first album his an absolute masterpiece, all the others are.. His style his fast thinking, fierce, unconventionnal, aggressive, immature and unharmonious, mirroring the guy himself ! If he ever gets an other album out, I'll most certainly buy it. But his opinions are shit and he seems a shitty person. I mean, spitting on Holdsworth? I garantee nobody would know Bryan Baker if it wasn't that he plays fast and atonal shred over one chord groove.

MOST ALL videos lack application in your playing. Most all tutorials is like... this is what is played. .. not what Luke Lewis does .... which is here is how it's played... here is how it works and when to use it. awesome job sir. Please start a patreon.

Fascinating guitarist.

Unapologetically defensive Holdsworth rant here. Bryan is a great guitarist and he said a lot of good things in this session. But his comments on Holdsworth betray a deep immaturity. To say Holdsworth is objectively bad, is objectively wrong. It’s just stupid. I mean, for one thing some of the greatest guitarists on the planet disagree with him (Metheny, Vai, McLaughlin, Zappa, Benson, Gambale…the list could be endless). Most of the people in the top of his own field think he’s wrong. Holdsworth’s music sure is challenging for most in the mainstream, but that doesn’t really matter, and it just doesn’t follow that it’s because the music is bad. What does that even mean anyway? Objectively bad? Music is largely subjective, down to temperaments, genre etc. And although it could be argued that there is such a thing as bad music and bad playing (derivative, technically incompetent), it would be indefensible to attribute such things to Holdsworth. If Bryan thinks he didn’t have feeling, groove, rhythm and emotion, then that’s just a deficiency in his own perception. Just confidently asserting musical prejudices (“objectively bad, dumb, sucks”) doesn’t make an argument. Holdsworth has thousands and thousands of devoted listeners and admirers, and the depths of his musical universe is still being explored. My bet is that in decades and centuries to come, people will still be talking about and listening to Holdsworth. As fantastic as a guitarist Bryan is, the same can’t be said about his music.

Bryan - what in the world is “objectively bad” regarding Allan Holdsworth’s music? Just because you don’t like it does not make it “bad.” It just means you don’t like it. Please learn to have respect for others.

Funny, I first heard Giant Steps as a kid and always liked it…. WAAAAY before I knew that it was supposed to be “hard” and “difficult”. I just thought it was fun.
