Steel Boat Renovation Ep 03 - Descaling the Bilges
In order to decide what steel to keep and what steel to cut out we need to clean up the bilges back to bright steel removing all scale and corrosion. This requires the removal of internal structures such as grey water tanks in spaces far too tight for an old chubster.

Steel Boat Renovation Ep 02 - Stopping rust and sealing leaks
Переглядів 12 тис.День тому
The majority of damage aboard Blue Steel, our Van Der Valk Vitesse 48, has been caused by water ingress for the many corrosion holes that have been left neglected. This video gives some insight into how we have started sealing the holes to get the bilges dry. FANCYING MORE? YOU CAN FOLLOW US HERE SavingBlueSteel

Blue Steel is a Van Der Valk 48 Vitesse, which fell into probate after the death of her original owner and deteriorated due to over 8 years of neglect. In this introductory video I try to explain the change of direction we have taken since starting the expedition truck build, and introduce you to our future dream and the renovation we are undertaking. Get rid of the steel tanks, and use blatters, you can get them in various sizes 😅 even for fuel i believe, but I'm not quite sure of that.

The lower hull plates are too thin. Cut the bottom hole plates next to the centerline, probably over the whole length of the ship and replate. That is the only way to do it right. Or else you will be patching for decades.

Awesome job cleaning this mess. If you want to refurbish that yellowed out toilet seat... just place the parts it in a see through container with a lid (for this size, i suggest you get one of these countainers that is supposed to store clothes under you bed ). Submerge them in a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide (12% is enough) and put the container at a sunny place (if there is no sun this time of year, put it in a cardboard box which insides are covered with kitchen grade aluminium foil and palce a "halogen !!!" lamp inside that box. After 1-2 days, that seat looks like a new one.

Dear SBS couple I would really like to watch the restoration of a steel yacht. But this vessel seems too far gone already. Please kindly allow me to suggest something: This long term and in the end expensive project is not suitable for you. Simply because of the fact, that you two are old already. Therefore the most reasonable thing to do would be: Gutt the boat completely out and sell as much as you can. Then sell the hull metal to a scrapyard. 2) Why still having this way too loud and therefore annoying and distracting "music"? Please turn down the volume and use it as a background music (if any). Best regards, luck, health and wisdom.

Dear SBS couple. 😱 Good grief! How about less talking and more working? Who do you think needs to know what you packed into your van? 2) Why still this way too loud and therefore annoying and distracting "music"? I would love to watch the restoration/repair of this steel yacht. Please turn the volume down and use it as a background music (if any). Best regards, luck, health and wisdom in particular.

Why you didn't put your vacuumcleaner on the floor when emptying the grey water tank? When pumping liquids you should always keep height difference as minimal as possible in order to have maximum suction power available. And besides you should have kept the rubbish away from your galley.

Cut up the tanks and get rid of them. Replace with smaller removable plastic tanks once the hull is repaired

I was actually relieved to see that the electric installation does look tidy and not even too bad - apart from that broken dc-dc converter of course. Thanks for that episode and please keep them coming! 😊

If it were me I would cut the bottom of the hull from the out side more or less the full lenght and replate the I've seen it done before, what you are doing you will never get to everything, I can see it's to thin your fighting against it, working from the outside is far better and more straight forward,I wish you well.

Please turn the volume down and use it as a background music (if any). I'm looking for a "channel substitute" because Sailing Melody unfortunately switched from restoring a steel yacht to a fibreglass sailing boat. Best regards, luck, health and wisdom.

I was first to post today but it is not showing in the comments. Early comment started with letting you know about the laser device sold on Amazon that welds, cuts, and strips/cleans surfaces and does a great job. I asked if that was not in the budget as the time it will save might shorten this project to the point you will live long enough to enjoy your boat. I also stated patch hull holes with larger plates to avoid patchwork of using small pieces. As stated in an earlier video, this is not a small project and progress is so slow you might not live long enough to take it into open waters. You need to bring on a reasonable group to assist. Have fun and stay safe.

That Capacitor looks like it took a lightening strike. the 24 to 12V inverter your looking at is very common and shouldn't be hard to replace. your output at 12V is 30 amps. not to bad, again depends on what your going to do with it. In todays age of electronics LED lighting and inductive cook tops along with a host of everyday appliances are offered in 12V. That invertor would most likely handle the entire boat for interior lighting if you rework everything into LEDs (Not the exterior lighting spot lights and whatever else you are going to use). From what we've seen since you started I would think 80 to 90 percent of the electrical will need to be rewired. Just my guess. Good luck! and we'll be watching as you move forward with your revival!

There are reliable flexible bag tanks made to replace metal tanks. I have two 25 gallon flexible tanks that I purchased in 1996 for my old power boat. They expand and conform to the space provided. They're very durable. The boat lives in Maine, and I use non toxic antifreeze in them every winter .

Hate to be negative but the common trap of wanting a boat to big with too little money and or time. Buy something smaller in better condition and stop living in fantasy land, your old and a dreamer, not 20 and brilliant/rich.

I admire you for this massive project you’ve taken on board. Do you know if her engines are serviceable, also I would have thought that the best way to deal with the badly damaged rusted parts would be to replace them with fabricated steel, wielding, grinding and smoothing them ready for painting. I’d love to know the yachts history, when she was built and how it came to be in the state it is. Just listened to your update about who built the boat, thanks and keep up the good work.

    • @SavingBlueSteel
      @SavingBlueSteel 18 годин тому

Thank you. We don't know for sure as we haven't yet run them - but the history suggests the engines were in good order when she was last used. She has less than 1,200 hours on each of her Volvo Penta 380hp turbo diesel engines.

Great Project !! 🙂👍 .. I looked at her in Milford Haven a couple of years ago .. maybe more ? .. I’m more a sail boat kind of guy but I’ve restored small ships 🙂 my proudest achievement was in 1974 .. I spent 18 months living aboard and restoring Lillian 2 .. she’s a 96ft 1918 twin screw diesel motor yacht .. plenty on google if you search 👍 Anyway .. my advice to you is buy some old scaffolding stairs .. and build a really usable staircase up into the back deck of the boat … I’ll pop by if I may when I’m next down in Pembrokeshire .. I’ve got a house in Solva and I often pop over to Milford.. I’m a big fan of Sampson boat video blog .. Leo is an ex musician and his music is spot on .. !! Also I sold the old steel barge to Chris on restoring Rusty barge Video Blog I’ll send you a link .. he’s loving his project .. both blogs are worth watching for inspiration 😀👍 All the best .. Frank

Definitely say hello if you see us there. I’m more of a sailing boat guy myself but Rachelle prefers motor cruisers as she likes space. We have ruminated on buying a large spacious steel sailing vessel that needs some renovation if we’re still motivated after finishing this one. That way I get sail and she gets space, but for now we’re loving this project. Indeed - we’ve been searching for scaffolding as we Intend to cover from the gunwales down with heavy duty tarpaulin and have side access stairs - great minds. Thanks for all the tips, they’re very welcome 🙏🏻
