Ep.13 – SOME IMPROVEMENTS – DUTCH STYLE TANK – 175 Liter 46 Gallon Aquascape
In this episode we see how the Tetras are too scared to eat out of the jar,
the replacement of the fertiliser with another brand and the very annoying application of soil fertiliser.
We also see a small pruning.
I also remove the complete cover of the aquarium.
There were some problems and surprises when I added the soil fertiliser.
The main problem was that there was air in the fertiliser capsules and they floated to the top.
Also, as soon as the capsules got wet, it was relatively difficult to grab them with the tweezers.
The next day, the capsules swelled up very large.

In this episode we take a look at the tank after the massive pruning last time. Here we notice that the algae have grown considerably, but the plants didn't. The detritus is vacuumed out and the filter is cleaned. After cleaning the filter and all the hoses, the filter has so much power again that a small crater appears in the bottom. Then the jet nozzle at the filter outlet is removed. Tank se...

    hmmm..... your having a very persistent problem with green dust algae there. Your light to fert ratio is off, I see you are running a eheim light which is quite powerful what are you dosing must be quite high to have this much green dust over a 200 day period?

      ahhhhh... you also have BBA and green hair algae problem so sorry buddy but this is a CO2 flux problem. Very difficult to fix once you have it. you will need to do complete restart or begin a bleaching of your plants. Recovery is extremely difficult from this point. I only say as I don't want you to be disheartened of your scape.

    • @TomsFishTanks

      Hi, thanks for commenting. I am not 100% sure what you are trying to tell me. Maybe it is a linguistic problem. Both EHEIM lamps together give about 35 watts of power or 4600 lumens of light. When I look at other scapes they often use the Chihiros WRGB II pro which for my tank size is 74 watts or 6600 lumens. In my opinion, this would mean that the EHEIM LEDs are clearly too weak. Alternatively, of course, the addition of fertilizer could be reduced. For fertilizer Masterline recommends 1ml Masterline I or II per 30L for a light output of more than 0.5W per liter or 1ml per 50L for a light output below 0.5W per liter. With the two EHEIM LEDs the light output per liter would be 0.21W, with one Chihiros already 0.42W per liter. Both are less than the desired 0.5W per liter for a strong light tank. What do you think about this? By "CO2 flux problem" I'm not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean uneven distribution throughout the water volume, a fluctuation throughout the day, or a general volume problem (too much/too little)?

    • @TomsFishTanks
      @TomsFishTanks 11 місяців тому

      @@mrb2109 To answer the actual question: For the 175 tank I currently use 3ml Masterline I, 3ml Masterline II and again 3ml Masterline carbo. The lamps light up 10 hours a day, 1.2 hours of which they dim up or down. Thus 8.8 hours at 100% power and the remaining 1.2 hours in the dimming phase.

      @TomsFishTanks hi Tom not a problem your tank currently suffers from 2 to 3 types of algae. The green dust is not a problem and will go away with time and water changes. You unfortunately have 2 more types of algae hair algae and black beard algae these form due to dramatic changes in the water column. Black Beard algae is caused due to rapid CO2 changes. Hair algae is caused due to over fertilising and poor plant health. Although you maybe following guidelines of specific products due to big changes being made these algae have appeared. Now I'm not saying these algae are the end of your scape but without drastic action these algae will thrive and kill your plants.

    • @mrb2109
      @mrb2109 11 місяців тому

      This being said tom Barr insists both algae are cause due to flow of the tank. So take what you will from both thought processes. Try 24hr aquarist bba remover for the black beard and reduce your macros for a week to half what you are dosing. Trim your arthenaki removing heavily removing all affected leaves. Then when trimming think about the flow of your tank can the water fully circulate. I've done many dutch tanks and this has always been the trickiest bit. Without 2 1/2 inch gaps facing the correct direction between each plant you will suffer circulation problems.

Sometimes the Corydoras pygmaeus eat them directly from the tab, but mostly they eat them when the tabs have dissolved. Sometimes, as seen here, the Tetras also eat from the tabs although they get enough pellet food or frozen food. The Amano shrimps also eat a good part of the tabs, although they also get special shrimp food.

    I trained my betta to come up for feedings. I drop 1 pellet at a time in. If he eats it, he gets another. Usually he eats 3 or maybe 4, once a day. The minute he loses intetest I stop feeding him. This prevents uneaten food from falling to the bottom of the tank. Works for us ! He's a great fishy boy - Lots of personality ! He's a solid black halfmoon plakat named Marty. I've had him almost 2 yrs now. He lives in a heated, filtered 5 gal tank all by himself. He seems very happy & healthy. He gets a water change & tank vacumn once a week. Clean the glass inside before the water change & clean the decor if neccessary. He has plants & a big rock cave that he absolutetly loves ! This is the first time I've seen liquid humin used...my brain made the tangential connection to soylent green hahaha. Is this your secret to keeping healthy plants? They're flourishing! Well done documenting this process~ Your betta is beautiful!

    • @TomsFishTanks
      @TomsFishTanks Рік тому

      Thank you. The Liquid Humin is intended more for the fish. You could also use almond leaves and/or alder cones, but I have had bad experiences with these before because the leaves or cones probably contained insecticides. Unfortunately, some of the animals died and since then I have only used Liquid Humin. Hopefully it contains less harmful stuff and the dosage is easier to realise. Since the betta tank is not fertilised or otherwise artificially enhanced, I think most of the plant nutrients come from the food/excretions of the few animals. When choosing the plants, I also made sure that they can cope with low light, as the betta tank is rather sparsely lit when I'm not filming. In the Dutch Style Aquascape, on the other hand, a lot of fertiliser is used in addition to much more light. Even cryptocorynes are currently growing like weeds there.

      @@TomsFishTanks thanks for the response! I was just thinking of adding more botanicals to my tank...but with this new information, I may have to go with the liquid human route :P. Love the dutch style aquascape...it's so fun to see a tank that screams, "PLANTS!!"

    • @TomsFishTanks
      @TomsFishTanks Рік тому

      I also had relatively few plants in the tank at the beginning, but can now say through experience that the more plants are in it, the water quality increases steadily. Especially when I think of my first Betta video in which maybe 5% of the tank consists of plant mass. Meanwhile I would say that about 20% of the tank are plant mass. And Fizzle (the Betta) seems to feel much better when he wiggles through the floating plants. A long run-in period of the tank is also very advantageous if everything is to run naturally. Logically, you can hang (relatively) large filters on the tanks to filter out the dirt mechanically or chemically. However, this requires electricity, makes a lot of work by cleaning the filters again and again and is also only useful to a limited extent due to the biological processes. Plants do all this without them wanting anything from you. The Liquid Humin helps in this case the necessary tannins and humins, which would normally be created by the decay of wood, without having this wood. If in nature too much or too little of the respective substances are present, because the necessary degradation processes have not yet taken place, animals die, sometimes even millions of them. I would like to avoid this in aquaristics.

    • @AquaJoyClub
      @AquaJoyClub Рік тому

      @@TomsFishTanks I'm very into planting steadily over time! I was just looking at purchasing more plants online today though. I think I have a problem haha. Thank you for sharing your knowledge/experience with using liquid humin. Luckily, I haven't had any aquatic deaths from botanicals yet. I boil them until I have a witches' brew, rinse them off in cold water, and add them into the tank. Which is still potentially risky on doing based on your findings. Now I'm curious to see if there are any sellers that carry botanicals free of chemicals!

      Yeah i though about it, but i'm not sure if it would provide any benefit to the video. If it had voiceover what sort of voiceover would you like? Just the text passages read out loud, way more commentary on what i'm doing or something completely different?

    Which filter do you use?

      It's in the description. It's an EHEIM eXperience 250T Filter with integrated 150W Heating Element. I like it very much, dead silent, you could sleep with your head on it and wouldn't notice it... Unfortunately you can't buy this filter new anymore... But they have the same version without the heater or newer versions with heating element.

    What are the vitamins for?

      This is JBL Atvitol. It should improve the health of the animals. However, I can not say if it does anything at all... I had originally purchased the product because of the previous Betta. He was, unfortunately, ill very often. In the end he had a fungal infection for which there was no buyable/approved medicine within the EU.
