Why Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Are Good Business.
Join us as we explore how Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) are more than just ethical imperatives-they're strategic advantages. In this episode of Shifting Views with Willis, I sit down with Giselle Marcus, Vice Dean of EDI at Washington University in St. Louis. Giselle is not only an academic leader but also a seasoned executive with experience managing multimillion-dollar business units at major corporations like AT&T and Accenture.
What you’ll learn:
How to frame EDI to engage skeptical business leaders.
Common misconceptions about workplace inclusion.
Why some leaders misinterpret EDI as a "box-ticking exercise."
Real stories showcasing the impact of EDI on a company’s bottom line.
Practical actions that leaders can take today to foster genuine inclusion.
About Giselle Marcus: Giselle has a rich career in turning around underperforming business units and teaching DEI in the Olin Business School’s MBA program. Her work extends to speaking engagements and corporate governance, where she highlights how inclusive practices benefit both the workforce and financial outcomes.

All these comments are lovely. Please can I encourage you to subscribe to the channel. There is so much more content about shifting views on issues in business, community and society.
Wow, this episode was truly incredible! Thank you so much for such insightful and thought-provoking content. The way you unpacked the complexities of equity, diversity, and inclusion was both powerful and eye-opening. I feel inspired and equipped with new perspectives that I can take back to my own work and life. This conversation is exactly the kind of dialogue we need to keep pushing forward-thank you for all the knowledge, passion, and authenticity you brought to this episode! Gisele is Amazing! 💙
@@QueenP-s1q that is such amazing feedback. I’m so glad you enjoyed the discussion and found it useful. Even more so that you’re going to take some of the learnings back to your own workplace. We are all about shifting views. What a lovely comment to read. Thank you. You’re right, Gisele is wonderful and has so much knowledge and she passionately articulates this.
We are all a value as individuals that we bring differences that make up a winning team which drives exceptional results. Ms Gisele thank you for sharing how the team, the front line, is your most valuable asset as a leader and a company. Belonging!
@@DerrickThomas-s4q preach! Absolutely right. Thank you for tuning in. I hope we can get more leaders to think this way.
👏🏼I’m RETIRED, but EDI can be beneficial to the world of work, education, communities & LIFE! America needs to greatly improve its EDI culture. Superb conversation & exchange of ideas. Interesting podcast !❤ your eyeglasses Ms. Marcus👍
@@gloriascott9574 you’re so right. EDI applies to everything. This should be common sense and reflective of being good humans. Sadly this is lost in so many arenas. I’m glad you enjoyed the podcast and thank you for tuning in.
This was so informative I appreicate the knowledge!! As running a few business myself though it's not my forte, this information hit right on point with some of the battles I faced. Great job Gisselle!!!

Primary teaching is more challenging, yes!
@@tjMooMoo yes I think this should be recognised. Teaching at all levels is challenging for different reasons but I think primary teaching is undervalued when the impact is so significant.
And this people is a discussion on a subject and how it works by two people who don't actually know how these things...

I really enjoyed recording this podcast. Such an insightful chat about the power of parenting and the role of leadership in all parents.
Thump!!! Hahahaha
Mum has a heart
The solution would be to take 50% custody. Men rarely ask for it and usually get the custody arrangements they ask for. If you're making someone a single mom, why shouldn't you contribute to costs like childcare? I wouldn't want money Id want the dad to care for his kids 50% of the time, and split custody. That's more valuable.
@@ClaireWhiteheadIrl thanks. In the full pod the guest talks about exactly this approach. Equal 50/50. But also, it’s not necessarily a guy making the woman a single mum. Couples mutually separate all the time. Not necessarily because it’s the man fault. It could equally be the other way. But usually it’s a mutual decision. If there’s separation and no extreme circumstances involved, then 50/50 access and finances should be the approach but often isn’t the case.
As a divorced man reduced to a pay check with a court order against my ex to see my kids.. yes. There is no protection for fathers and the system rewards women financially for crushing men with children.
@@jean-baptisteemanuelzorg2112 I’m sorry to hear your experience. In the full podcast the guest talks about the system being out of touch with today’s world. I wonder if many fathers feel that’s the case.
@@ShiftingViews if nothing else… at the 40% tax bracket. For every £1… that’s .4 tax but .15( Nat insurance, pension etc)… ex gets .3 (30%) so I’m left with .25… someone make sense of this… My ex now lives with her parents and till my nervous breakdown, caused by these actions of using my own children as weapons, CMS forced me to pay her circa £1000 pcm… They need to means test both parents… She now lives the high life (doesn’t have a mortgage)… I have a mortgage so my children have future safety… I pay both ends and get told when where and how long I see my kids… if I want more… her response: take me back to court..: Yeah the system is very broken… if women were punished for their actions this would stop..: As if
@@jean-baptisteemanuelzorg2112 there are so many stories like this. Of course every scenario is individual so a one size fits all approach does not work. There needs to be a shift in views in how use we approach these complex and very emotional situations. Certainly means testing from a financial standpoint. But also more easy access to interventions that might help a couple mediate amicably a positive way to move forward after a separation with the children being the priority. It’s shouldn’t be about money but rather what life is being created for the child between the two households.
@@ShiftingViews I think it’s very Simple… denying access without any legitimate justification is child abuse… damages children… Let’s be real… the stats demonstrate it’s women that do this. It’s the single thread that runs as a constant through all the stories you know… regardless of individual stories… If there was punishment and accountability… it would stop… Why did I need to pay £12.5k to go to court to see my children because my ex made up lies and defamed me to my kids… I was an aerospace programme manager, ote c£100k… I now do manual labour at minimum wage as I’ll be damned if I’m paying my ex a profit to abuse me any longer… One change is all that’s needed… women that make up lies should be fined and threatened with imprisonment if they do this… exactly the same punishment I would get if I don’t pay my child maintenance on time, every time! It’s called equality… equality of punishment!
great listening and questions, an encouraging interview, with clarity and empathy.
@@JackieGibson-yd5so really kind of you. Thank you for tuning in.
What a ridiculous idea! I went from public transport to getting my own vehicle, it gave us our freedom & our precious time back as a family. Using my own vehicle literally saves us hours every week on the school run & work, compared to using public transport.
@@77jeden it’s not a bad idea. The issue is not with drivers. I’m a driver also. But MOST people don’t need to drive to school. For those that do, just park further away from the school and don’t leave the engine idling outside of the school. Also, councils can plant more hedgerows near schools, as they’re great for clearing up air pollution. These are not big changes to make.
Great

@@milagarnecs440 thanks very much. Glad you enjoyed it.
Ya let the leftist show you how to solve inequity, well it's impossible so that's why the harder they try the more inequity these idiots create and so come the crime. Take a seat buddy. Your counterproductive and it's showing.
I’m not a leftist or any other form of ‘ist’. I’m just a human using common sense. Nor do I state how to fight inequality. I’m just pointing out that it’s so obviously an issue and driver of crime. I’m sorry you found the video boring. But you did comment and thank you for that.
@@ShiftingViews Envy is a bigger problem then inequity. Proof is that even the poorest person today in a first world country has more access to education, more access to resources and creature comforts then the majority of the better off 100 years ago. Being poor in a first world country is a choice, so is being a criminal. Not wanting to work is different then having no access to employment. Being bitter because you have less then someone else is a pretty standard human emotion that will exist no matter where the wealth gap ends. Only morality can counteract our darker human emotions.
Hi I feel bad for you so I give you your first comment please please can you give me a shout out

The UK would never have a company podcast because we are so insular and absolutely against innovation. We wait until America tells us it’s ok and then we react. Pathetic.
@@NibberKSmooth I’m hoping to change that mindset. People are meant to talk to each other. As an innovation coach my drive is to change workplace cultures.
There is no sustainability in capitalism. As long as we don't become a fully voluntary society everything is a futile and cruel excercize in verticalism and classism.
I hear your frustration but that utopian world you’re seeking is unlikely any time soon. So, whilst we live in the society we do, efforts must be made to improve where we can. Having businesses as part of the sustainability journey is vital.

Yes! And it's not just the kids 😡
@@howardcornwell9841 that’s a fair point. In the full podcast we also discuss how this translate to adults and work and the impact that this also had on children within a lockdown family. Check it out.
If people voted for who they want to win rather than to try to stop the Conservatives by voting Labour as a protest vote the votes would be more representative of who people want to govern the country.
I think this highlights a couple of points. Firstly, if the population is so exasperated by a party they'll do anything to remove them, that's a reflection of terrible politics at play by the party. Secondly, based on the first past the post system, the only avenue people have is to try and vote tactically. So maybe thats a reflection of the system. It's hard to identify what's fair. There are flaws to all voting models.
On the other hand, you vote for your constituency yet if the highest votes overall wins, then they could be leading against a larger opposition for seats. Would mean bills may not be managed by the party in power.
Yes. It’s a very complicated system. Is first past the post democratic I wonder?
@ShiftingViews always improvements needed but I just find it undemocratic that a constituency could vote 100% for one party and be represented by the opposite party in parliament with proportional representation.
@@hugowalters yes, I understand. I suppose there are arguments for and against any voting system. The more I think about it, the more I lean towards FPTP.
Politicians held by media ..... The media is in the Politicians pockets

What is your understanding of inflation, plus the impact that government spending and the banking industry has on it?
Nice! Thanks for sending this through. The discussion is more around the structure of politics and how it works. But I think I could include in terms of politicians experience and knowledge of issues they’re responsible such as the economy.
Its a disgusting joke the way this country has been ran. The political class have sold everyone out usually the most vulnerable in society. Its time for a change
I agree. Inequality is rife. It’s root of so many problems.

"Under water" Neil deGrasse Tyson debunked that. 90% of an iceberg is under the surface, and when ice melts it takes up less space. The example he gave was if you fill a glass of water to the rim (like 1 more drop would make it overflow) with an ice cube in it, the glass wont overflow because the ice takes up less space when it melts and most of it was under the surface already. Dont by into the propaganda, yes climate change is an issue, but it wont flood us.
Two thirds of the world’s surface is water. Sea level rises is not propaganda it’s fact. Coastal cities and towns (like Hull mentioned in this clip) is at real risk of flooding. Climate change (driven by humans) is the cause. These are facts. Re your comments about Tyson see ua-cam.com/video/Jm_YoL9ykC4/v-deo.htmlsi=Si4iEAh505eBcSWm He explicitly discusses flooding and the disaster that’s possible.
Are you using logic!!! 😂
I think so. Which part is not logical?
Or maybe it's because they have enough spare time and energy to enjoy leisure activities.
Hmmm that’s one view and you may be right in some cases. But typically these leaders have taken part in these activities before they became leaders. Also, your implication is that they have flexibility and affordability because they’re leaders, but not all leaders are in that privileged position.
It’s all good in conversation but when it comes to individual people operate better with a wider populace. A group of 10 nurses won’t solve it all, a figurehead with experience is needed. More could definitely be done to incorporate the nurses’ skills and experience to the table though
Absolutely. It’s not so much a focus on one discipline such as nurses or Dr’s. It’s more ensuring that the conversation which determines healthcare needs for a given region is had with a group of people from varied backgrounds with different insights and experience of the real world, tangible issues that people are facing day to day.
😑 Promo-SM
Let doctors do there job. We are desperate for good doctors. Why take up huge amounts of their time with non clinical administration work??
Agreed! Clinicians priority should be delivering medical services to people. Obviously we need insight from people on the ground such as Dr’s, nurses, social carers etc to inform the health policy and funding/resources needed for a given area. The point made in this clip is these insights should come from a range of health professionals and not driven just by senior Dr’s.
It's the CORRUPTION of our USPS per TRUMPISM and LOUIS DE JOY ... The USPS was GREAT for over 60 YEARS, until then!!!
350 million on a big red bus was meant to fund this remember
Narcissists have climbed the ladder of every human system of power. It's about money and power, not human welfare, needs and happiness. One can see systems slowly being shredded by the hard done by average person now. The elites have got a war coming.
Perhaps a citizens assembly approach to informing policy. So it becomes a combination of elected officials and insight from citizens. Kind of like jury service but for legislation.
Even though this has no comments and very few views, this is the best YT short I've seen in a good while. Keep making more content like this.
Wow, thank you. That's really kind. The channel is quite new so I've only recently started posting content. Hopefully, it will grow. Exactly! Fujitsu lied when they said Horizon was bug-free. And Paula Vennels just sucked it up. Both need prosecuting.
Yeah if you watch the full episode of the podcast (in my vids) we discuss this. A very poor culture in that organisation
That’s the issue with the senior management at the PO. They Were judging the staff by their own massively low morale standards, when in fact sub postmasters are, in general the salt of the earth type characters.
@@oiuslags yes, a lack of empathy from the leadership to the workers. This happens with toxic cultures in an organisation which is why culture is so important. It comes from the top.
IIUC (from germany) part of the problem is that sub-postmasters are self-employed franchisees and _not_ employees.
That may well be the case for many. But in either case they should be able to have trust in the brand that they are working for or working with. They were using a system introduced by the post office which they have a right to expect to work without bugs and receive adequate training. They certainly should not have been prosecuted by what turns out to be a very corrupt leadership team.
So true it would be good but it's not even going happen . wrong government 😅
Yes, true. We’re at the mercy of politicians but we have put these ideas forward in the hope they’re heard by whomever has the power.
11 years undiagnosed arthritis. 4 years undiagnosed skin cancer. 4 GP referrals to CBT for mental health, 0 contact. I could go on. There's no fixing the healthcare in this country. Until doctors are scared of being sued, or stop making commission on medication then they'll forever misdiagnose, try useless medications before referring to specialists. The change has to start with doctors first, we have some of the worst in the first world.
Sorry to read of your health problems. There does certainly need to be systemic change in the health system. I wish you well and hope you are on the road to recovery.
