He found out because the writers knew it all along. To be honest L made conclusion real early that made Kira suspicious for him but they barely had any basis. He basically played lottery with some of his conclusions that narrowed down the investigation and they were correct.

How exactly being Kira would help Light find out he was being investigated? There is no connection. Being Kira and finding out he was under surveillance probably only helped him because he was more alert to something like that at the time

But I think at this point, Light knew that L knew that Raye gave him his identity. So he knew he could say that Raye was investigating him as common knowledge between the two.

He has a valid reason to know who Raye is and that Raye was following him due to the bus scene though? It wouldn't even be an assumption. He could've maybe reacted differently to the fact that Raye was dead but I don't think the reaction is that bad considering it's consistent with how L knows Light.

It's not really much of a theory when L himself says it outloud that he thinks Light is Kira from the very beginning he just needed to find actual proof for it.

I’ve just finished watching death note but now I need to watch it again

When you really take the show for what it is, L always looked dead throughout the show. ALways numb to everything. The investigation was almost like the pinnacle of his life because it challenged him more than anything before. Someone mentioned in L's death scene when Kira stared him down, L's eyes lit up like we hadn't seen anywhere before. I sometimes like to think L was willing to die in order to find out who Kira was because nothing else gave him pleasure in the world anyways.

The context of the conversation makes his deduction about Ray Pember plausible. It isn’t a fuck up it’s him displaying the maximum amount of intellect to L as he can.

It could also be assumed that the information about raye investigating light was told to him by his father after raye died seeing how it'd no longer be a conflict of interest. Soichiro could of mentioned it to light out of curiosity if he'd seen anything during the time of raye's death. That's enough for light to mention that he knows he was being followed by raye and mention it.

I figured it out on episode 1.

This guy and everyone saying that light slipped up are absolutely ridiculous. After saying those words which people listen to without the context and go crazy over . L tell him " several months ago there were 13 fbi agents which came to japan to investigate people CONNECTED TO THE POLICE" and then light replies "That would be the only reason i am under suspicion, i mean there are no other people u should suspect." . Basically he just deduces the reason he is under suspicion. L sees this and appreciates his deduction confirming light that he is correct. Not because "he wanted to get more out of him" if light just straight away said that like u people think he did , L would have already apprehended him.

I caught this as well and was incredibly confused how L never really brought it up again.
