Great video! 💚💚 I would really like to start making videos covering historical clothing for males (mainly Medieval and Regency era) but I'm not sure where to start, I'm also in SoCal (LA)- Is there a library you know of that has good sources? Or could you maybe point me to your favorite resources for information?

I ABSOLUTELY love this video. It's really brave of you to post this, knowing it didn't turn out too well. Life is totally about learning and doing!! There is too much emphasis on perfection these days!! I remember the S and Z threading like this... with the card facing up (ABCD up) Z threading- the card goes in the (zee) hole. With the card facing up (ABCD up) the thread is inserted from below. Then of course the end you just threaded through the card gets tied and ends up towards the weaver (you).

Fun experiment. You're on the right track, just need to upgrade your materials. I really like the fact you're trying to recycle upholstery leather. Unfortunately, it's not quite right for this application. Couple of notes from a friendly leatherworker - (TLDR - use veg tan, not chrome tan. 5-6oz "tumbled" for the top & 9-10oz for the sole. Also, use blue shop towels and regular masking tape to create your patterns. It's durable, cheap, and can be sewn on a regular sewing machine to make mock-ups for test fit to perfect the pattern before using the "good" leather.) First, Chrome tan (upholstery leather) is very durable, but you won't get the same results as vegetable tanned leather. Best use for chrome tan is bags, vests, hats, and other items where you want ruggedness and shape stability. For this kind of shoe, you really want a piece of 5-6oz tumbled veg-tan hide for the upper, and regular piece of 9-10oz veg tan for the sole. The "tumbled" leather is soft, unlike the normal veg-tan, which will remain fairly stiff without a lot of conditioning. Veg-tan may be soaked and worn wet, which will help it stretch and conform to your body as it dries. Companies like Weaver, Buckle Guy, and Springfield sell inexpensive panels that would fit your needs without breaking the bank. Second, the way you created your pattern was good, but next time use blue paper shop towels and masking tape. The shop towels - sold in almost any auto parts store - are like regular paper towels, but much more durable and a little oversized. They are also very cheap for patterning. Use masking tape (less expensive than duct tape and works just as well) to create larger panels, then work much the same way you did here. If you use a piece of cardboard under your foot, you can pin or tape the towel down close to your foot to get the right tightness. Then mark and cut out your design the same way you did with the fake leather. What makes the towel method so nice is it's super easy to add extra pieces if you cut too short, and you'll not waste any "good" material that's difficult or expensive to replace. Once you have a pattern, you can even use the towels to make a mock-up that can be sewn on a conventional sewing machine that may be test-fit before moving on to expensive leather! Just add tape around the area you will be sewing. Sorry this was so long, but I hope it was helpful. Good luck in future endeavors! I look forward to seeing what you make next 😃

Sole leather can be made with raw hide, you soak it to loosen it up and then you sew it to your shoe

Good on you! nice work. Upholstery leather is really too soft and supple for most footwear. If you prefer this soft supple stuff perhaps kangaroo would be a good option? Roo skins are very strong, thin and stretchy, but most importantly they're very cheap. I found 5 skins for $50 on eBay which for any type of leather is just a steel. I've recently made quite a few sneakers out of recycled couch leather and it's just rubbish. LOL but its free :) I also made a pair of slippers out of couch leather which were very nice for a few months. I'm pretty sure there's a certain amount of acidity to the human foot just from sweating etcetera because my slippers totally disintegrated. LOL upholstery leather just doesn't seem to have the same robust tanning requirements that you need for footwear but I'm very much guessing only time will tell.

Wet the shoes so the leather will shrink and fit better to your feet!! Also you could sew in a little piece kind of like a tongue to close up that little gap at the top. Good entertaining video though ❤❤❤

Doubt they wore a peplos which is Greek but they probably copied the stola which would have been worn by the Romans only a couple of centuries earlier - assuming you are in Britannia that is. Watch the video on this by Crow's Eye Productions, based on actual finds and the clothing they show the Anglo Saxon women wearing is totally different and makes more sense. It shows those living in the vicinity of Sutton Hoo for those interested and they wear garments worn elsewhere in Europe at this time rather than a garment worn in classical Greece in the last millennia. Saying that I do like the colours and the green as an over gown would look nice, just not worn as a classical Greek garment in POST Roman Britain.

To make it easier to tie in the back, you could leave a string through the holes on each side then tie those together. The final pinafore looks great!
