Loved watching this! Great ad!
Mike Rowe !!!! you are awesome ..... Congratzzzz !!!!
Foundation should be replaced. Good work brodies
Damn.. Mike is getting up there. I'm glad for all hes given us, but i hope he doesn't overdo it. Older bodies don't recover so fast from being overworked
A huge company like groundworks, and you'd think they would run shop vacs with the jack hammers.
And 3.5 gallon buckets are way better.
What an absolutely brilliant ad. Put Mike in a ad and I’ll watch
My question is. Why didnt they fix the cracks in the block. Hmmmmmm. Half ass job
Mike I am very glad to find this new outlet for you to keep doing what you do and promote the trades!! As a fire sprinkler installer/ inspector id love to see you do one on fire protection.
I highly doubt that little plastic sheet is going to do anything when that wall caves into the basement. These contractors should have refused the job due to major structural defects in the wall. The lean on that wall was truly shocking that they were just rolling plastic over it and going right along. This is scary stuff that these contractors are out there.
I thought they were going to go with diagonal auger bracing towards the outside to pull the wall back out straight. Talk about doing the bare minimum🤦🏻♂️👎🏼. No bueno.
That is truly a “crawl” space. I have a crawlspace in one of my rental properties, but has about 38”to 45” of clearance so it is not totally constricted. Had it encapsulated last year.
The proper fix is to dig out around the foundation. Seal the block and add a barrier to prevent the water from ever touching the wall. Adding drainage at the base. Then you would do the inside work as a fail safe. Did this type of work for years. Its hard nasty work.
I completely agree👍🏼.
Agreed. However, for those without the budget to go that route inside is the alternative. Did this work over 35 yrs ago for a different company. The day I got my own crew I was in Indianapolis training the workers there on a new system when I got called back to Pittsburgh after they fired a whole crew for upsetting a Dr who had a personal office in his basement. I managed to get the company a great review in the end and that Dr said to me, your to smart a guy to be working for them. Loved the hard work when I was younger.
Been needing this done bad but don’t have the machines to get it done myself or help. What do you think it would cost to waterproof 3 100 foot or so walls on an old block foundation
My dad’s house needed braces cause the wall built into the hill behind the house was caving in. Had to torque the braces to 80 ft lbs with a 3ft torque wrench every month. One of the braces had about 6 inches of clearance from the water heater. It was a workout
Why not just fill that hole area. No more water problems if it was just filled in. also looks like its about to cave in at any moment.
👍
Dang, cool process .
Awesome Job Tyler❤
So is that white plastic film a fix or just a cover up?
They forgot to mention that the biggest reason for the failing foundation and walls is that they didn't waterproof the outside of the blocks or put in a proper French drain.
Homeowner got ripped off! You always waterproof from the exterior! That wall will continue to weaken due to static water pressure and intrusion. You never want the water in your home in the first place. Congratulations, now your basement is full of humidity!
total waste of money. you cant waterproof anything from the inside. proper would have been to excavate the exterior, try to straighten the wall, waterproof the outside. they didnt dig anywhere near deep enough or large enough a footing for those new beams to hold anything that is crap work
100%
Loved the video, but this is a really expensive bandaid. Weep holes will eventually clog, structural integrity is too compromised as well. The right fix is to go at it from the outside, remove all dirt around basement and fix the structural issues and set footing drains. I know it’s probably extremely expensive and homeowner can’t afford it or she doesn’t know the extent of the damage.
I worked with Orion and terminix shit easy work especially for my size
@ joedoesstuff
I know this is the bain of existence how would water actually be useful for getting a level surface? Say a paddling pool fill it to the brim with water then add sand till the sand replaced the water? Leveling the ground floor is the skill the pool trick just is a way to keep a level of sand what if block pins could be used to push the ground to a certain depth from the tallest point or highest point the smallest contour the highest point and the lowest point compared the difference then calculate the radius of the contour to change the contours steps or elevation the sand in the pool does work though the water will fall to a lower point and the sand will roll the same direction and accumulated there natrually sorry I saw a kid falls over earlier cause of not level ground I know water can be a drill over time.
Why can't we just walk on string line this can be level and strong enough in numbers to walk along, so long as it doesn't dip it's fine
If all the land was like Minecraft then the chances of falling over would be greatly reduced.
The smallest thing must be water surely I'm going to make a genuinely level surface there is a way
I bet there's a depth in the ocean which has no current and has a level point of environment which is below the point of the current and wave spawning then an atmospheric pressure lifts up the water to create the current in the first place the deepest point being where the level environment is although it can change based on the environmental circumstances.
If an object which was genuinely level gains weight and shakes without breaking it's level or size can be made then it could find or make the ground below it level Ice is the only thing I can think of because it gets thinner the colder it is if this object can be hollow at some point to add water which can be compressed as the object is shaking then it can increase its volume eventually to the point it will make the ground around it level
Out of sight out of mind? What an awful scam this is. Also they have backup sump pumps that use municipal water lines to create a suction to discharge water without the use of electricity.
What about mold and all the stuff that will grow behind the barrier?
Mike Rowe for president!!!
That's a nice crawl space. Might as well put a bed and Tv in there
Happy to have stumbled on this. Great to see Mike in new adventures.
Mike! We love you in Maine, I've been a home builder since 2010 and I collected all of your dirty jobs DVDS back in the day. I'm glad to see you're always promoting the blue collar working people and got your hands dirty again. Keep up the good work brother. 😊
would love to know if you guys crush up the concrete in something like a hammer mill as that would allow you to use it as the 'drainige media' / gravel and then not have to dispose of the waste material at the start too, can market this as a recycled material perk and also reduce costs as you dont have to pay for new gravel
The filters needed for the dust alone would be very expensive. Lots of construction waste goes in the ground unfortunately. I agree with you
No knee pads, 5 gallon buckets up the stairs, no masks. That's a rough day.
Prob only make $20 hr
Ya that wall should be repaired. Not they way to do it. It's a band-aid
You need a tile out site with gravel and membrane on outer wall
Better to open and rebuild it with block. Or pour a new wall out of concrete.
Mike, stop helping...it's making me feel so friggin old watching you get winded.
Mike is such a good dude. Always wish him and the family the best.
There wasn't a single proper thing done in this video. This was a huge cover-up job, and they did nothing to remediate the actual cause of an inward bowing foundation. This will lead to worse damage. I hate seeing this because as an inspector, I see this every day. You guys basically ripped off a homeowner.
How would this lead to worse damage? Please explain at least one of your objections
the sump was a great idea . Quote her 100k to dig it up you fool
@@KillRoy117 When you seal a basement or crawlspace on the inside, 1. You increase the likelihood of worse hydrostatic pressure or lateral soil pressure. 2. You create trapped moisture that can and will lead to mold growth.
@@prestonkincaid Yessir
@@KillRoy117 That Structure wall is compromised,it needs to be replaced not patched and covered.
Seriously guys, if Mike is down for more of these, please do them. If you guys cut out all the fluff and just give us raw stuff, the community will love it. The full segment of this was so informative and Mike, as he does, brings the charm forward. Seriously, i cannot stress this enough, if you put out those long form videos with minial fluff and all substance from a day of shotting, we will watch.
Thanks Groundworks. This was super informative!!!
As a Home Inspector it's our job to find and report these issues hopefully before the horizontal cracking and bowing starts. Sometimes we find them in the same condition as this house. Very interesting to see how it's fixed. We don't normally get to see that.
I was surprised they didn't address any of the block before adding the membrane. At least pressure wash the moss and algae out of the joints haha
I'm not a fan of that plastic against the walls. Masonry is supposed to be able to breathe. You'll end up with mold & deteriorating mortar behind that plastic.
I like the ai bot feature for replying to comments lol
I think they could use a tax write off called a dump truck. Touching dirt 10 times to get rid of it
This is such a scam and junk fix. Just fix it right, lift the house, dig up the outside, pour new CONCRETE walls, water proof it and add a proper footing drain, add a sump pit and interior drain piping to the sump if there's a high water table, then put the house back together. That block wall is shot and the bs push peirs and other reinforcement stuff is garbage in this situation. Plus CMU or block is MUCH more porous then a good 3500 psi concrete wall
Imagine making Maryland crab cakes for a company that's taking advantage of you and ripping you off. This isn't a fix this is a predatory industry
Dumbest thing I've seen. No way that'll work. Talk about polishing a turd. And paying $$$
This is crazy, that wall needs to replaced. I can't imagine how much money was wasted on this bandaid fix, can't believe a city inspector signed off on that.
