The Evolution of Fry Street
This documentary short covers the early opinions concerning a Houston area developer's May '06 purchase of a block of property in Denton, Texas' Fry Street area. Though subjected in recent years to landlord and city neglect, Fry Street is still considered by many to be Denton, Texas' historical seat of culture. Produced by Shanon Sparks, Nabutaka Takahashi, Tim Fuchtman for the Summer Documentary Workshop at the University of North Texas. Visit savefrystreet.com to find out how you can help. Very Nice. So much of the Special Time & place is lost- there have to be more bits, videos pics stories, to mark what was there.

Nice to be reminded of what Fry looked like when I grew up in Denton as a kid. The soul still lives today, but sure miss the Tomato.

many many many MANY nights spent sitting on the curb in front of the tomato or sleeping on a couch in the karma cafe back in 96-98ish. LOVED that area of town

We won we lost we now have a square full of drinking too. I am not complaining. Because I am almost over the bulldozing all these years later.

Damn, I started school at UNT last year and kept thinking, I wish there was more to do right by campus outside of Crooked Crust, Big Mike's and some shitty bro bars. Then I found out that Fry Street used to be cool. Don't get me wrong, love Big Mike's and Crooked Crust, just wish that I could see something other than a Dave Matthews cover band without going to the square.

Worked at the Army Surplus store after my daughter was born in 84. Worked for Nana when she opened and painted the Zebra. Drew up flyers for band like "Wonder Bread" and "The Bohemians" when thay played the Library. Left and came back and found the love of my life in the "Flying Tomato" . Worked for and bought "Fry St. Records' from Paul when he opened "Hairys"his new shop in Dallas. Had music playing on the street every other night. Even had the ghosts of Jim , Jimi, and Stevie play one nite.

Denton was my childhood. I loved going into Secondhand Rose, that place was like my church. When I got older I played in many bars in that area. It's also the home of the world's best bookshop; Recycled Books and Records on the square. And Urban Grown-ups is the best album ever. "I'm not alive on Sunday! No one else is anyway!"

people who spray paint the buildings and hang around outside favorite stores. Denton is still alive, even if it's changing.

I assure you Denton is not dead. The original Mr. Chopsticks may be gone, but Chai(?) already had another restaurant set up. Voyagers Dream and Recycled Books are still here along with the mini malls with their windows full of shiny weapons and odd novelty things. Denton's not dead even if Fry Street got knocked down. You're an idiot for saying Denton killed its soul because it isn't the City Council that is the soul of Denton. It's the nutjobs who go crazy for Brave Combo at Jazz Fest and the-

Said by someone NOT from Denton. You didn't pay attention to the history and memories made on Fry and what should've been maintained.
