The Urban Design Forum is an independent membership organization that advances bold solutions to urban challenges. Our Fellows are architects, landscape architects, planners, developers, public officials, scholars, activists, lawyers and journalists committed to building dynamic, equitable, and resilient cities around the world.
Local Center: Connected Corridors
Through the Local Center, three neighborhood leaders worked with teams of designers, engineers, and lawyers to develop vision plans for their commercial corridors and activate public spaces with vibrant lighting installations and community events.
The Local Center is a community design initiative that equips local leaders with the technical assistance, funding and connections to re-envision public spaces. The Local Center is a collaboration between Urban Design Forum and the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development.
Connected Corridors projects are made possible with support from National Grid’s Project C, NYC Department of Small Business Services, Charles H. Revson Foundation, Deutsche Bank, the NYC Green Fund, administered by City Parks Foundation, and Lily Auchincloss Foundation. Our programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

I am writing this from Cape Town where there is a severe housing crisis. South Africa is a complex mixture of very old and ultra modern. The ANC built three million homes when coming to power and gave the away for free. Clearly, it was unsustainable. Wall Street gave us the subprime mortgage crises - a total abuse of power and morality. We need formal finance for a population with an irregular income. Charging interest is inappropriate for a population with an irregular income. Read my paper “The Table Mountain Housing Finance Model “ for a rational alternative.
