On this channel you can expect to find content about running, photography, videography, general creativity, the outdoors, and more. As time goes by, some genres of videos may move to the forefront, but right now, the direction is a little unclear. Thanks so much for checking things out and for your support!
Summer Flashback | Nugget Creek Trail
Moving folders around on hard drives, I stumbled across the footage from this run, and the greens were so green that I felt like I had to share before this year comes to a close.

Silent Solstice Photography | Frozen Mendenhall Lake

I knew I wanted to practice landscape photography over the winter break, but I wasn't sure where I should end up on this particular day. The snow and frost around my house made me think that heading up valley would let me focus on those things. I didn't find what I was expecting, but I also didn't think I would be able to cross the lake, a trade I will happily take.

Depending on how the activity itself goes, running videos will likely continue to be the most prolific type of video on this channel moving forward. I'm currently committed to not having those videos be product reviews or training plan related. I run for the fun of it, and I want that to come across in the channel.
Channel Reintroduction | Nature Videos

I've had videos posted on this UA-cam channel for well over a decade. It started as a way to share my experience with the natural world around Juneau, Alaska, but the focus has drifted over the years. I want to get back to that central theme of seeking and sharing the beauty of the earth we've been given as a home. Running and landscape photography will often feature prominently, since they are...
Juneau, Alaska | A Summer Day | Sony A7siii

All the clips for this short film were recorded on one day, July 30th, in my beautiful hometown of Juneau. I originally had other plans for the direction of the video, but even though the point of interest shifted, the spectacular scenery on display did not. Locations on display include: Thunder Mountain, Gastineau Channel Wetlands, Mendenhall Glacier, and Shrine of St Therese.

From Basin Rd past the tram, past Gold Ridge, past Gastineau Peak, to Roberts Peak and back. This is just two goofy, average trail runners making the absolute best they could handle out of a sunny Saturday in Juneau, Alaska. If that sounds interesting to you, thanks for watching!

One week after an adventure on Blackerby Ridge with weather so brutal I kept the camera I brought with me packed away for the entire run, my friend Jon and I found some beautiful weather on top of Mt Roberts just in time to celebrate his birthday in the raddest way possible. As always, thanks for watching!

Last week my family and I were invited by a good friend to take a guided trip to the Norris Glacier. Our main job was to serve as "talent" for advertising content about the trip, but we were well taken care of by the guides when it came to food and lodging, and we were afforded some time to explore and create on our own. This short films is the result of me squeezing some video recording into t...

Yesterday, my daughter and I went out for a short hike, not really knowing where we would end up but also knowing that we didn't want the last day of June to sneak past us. I brought along my a7rv and two prime lenses partly to see whether working with a single body for both stills and video could meet all my camera needs. The verdict is that 60 fps provides enough slow motion for just about an...
Juneau Ridge Race | 2024 Short Film
Переглядів 4256 місяців тому
The Juneau Ridge Race is one of Southeast Alaska's premiere trail races, and while conditions on the namesake ridge were almost completely obscured by clouds, the 2024 running lived up to expectations. This video was filmed solo, and I learned that three videographers is probably the minimum needed to cover this race in the way it deserves...maybe in a future year.

Summer Trail Training | Week 3

This week traveling and vacationing with my family took a big cut out of my running and my filming...as it should. There was a little bit of fun exploration mixed into the trip, but I'm very glad to be back at home in Juneau!
Summer Trail Training | Week 2
Переглядів 996 місяців тому
This week was supposed to be about scaling back mileage and effort to match the training cycle of the beginning of preseason for high school cross country. Instead, I swapped out climbing for more time spent running at paces that are up-tempo for me, even if they're comfortable for high school runners.
Summer Trail Training | Week 1

This week was about finding out what it would even mean to share trail running experiences through video of a training recap. There is also some discussion of a month long goal for total ascent and reflections on being one year removed from a season ending injury. Thanks for watching, and enjoy your trails!

another juneau person in the house! glad to have found your channel!
Awesome! Glad you did too.
Beautiful place. Feels like i walked on this ice too while watching this video👍
Thanks so much for checking in, and I'm very glad the sense of being there came across in the video.
Kent, Altra Mont Blanc, Golf and nature! :) Happy Christmas! P.S. How little snow do you have in December and what cool trails
Merry Christmas! It's true. Juneau sits right at the edge of winter. On any given week, there might be a meter of snow, or it might just be warm with rain. You never know.
As a fellow trailrunner and E-Golf owner I approve of this video. Such an underrated car.
Rad that you found this video! The E-Golf makes the occasional trailhead appearance on the channel for sure.
Hey! Just found your channel and love it. Not everyone can really see those glimpses of nature's beauty even in real life. But you can and can take it on camera. Just beautiful video. Would glad to see more spectacular views through your eyes, Kent🙂Hope you can heal your trauma without consequences Love running and nature myself, but not able to show it to others through the video or photo. So I would glad to see more spectacular views through your eyes, Kent🙂 Sorry for my English too, it's not so great😁
Thanks so much for the words of encouragement!
Beautiful! I'll pray God continues to work through your recovery so you can continue to use what you love to reach people. Keep it up!
Thanks, Nathan. Happy Christmas season to you!
Great to see! But for me it would be even better without the music overlay.
Thanks for the feedback, Thomas. I definitely compared this video against a Freetrail video that came out recently with no music. Wouldn't have worked on this particular video though. There was a zipper tapping against the mic on the whole run. I used some audio editing to pull out most of the sound, but it still needed some cover.
I’m very glad to see and hear from you again, Kent! You've been gone for a long time! As always, magnificent nature and excellent photography. It was as if I was standing on the shore of a lake on a frosty morning. What's wrong with your health? The summer running season seemed to be going well. Please don't disappear. Sorry for my English :)
You’re comments are always so encouraging, Alex. Never worry about your English because it’s great. The fall was a roller coaster for running. I took a spill crossing a creek and badly bruised my knee. By the time I was almost over that, I developed some tendinitis in my achilles, which has kept me mostly away from running for a month now. I’ve got more than enough in my life to be thankful for though. Hope you are well!
@@KentMearig Get well soon! This exercise helped me a lot with Achilles tendonitis: ua-cam.com/video/mUKB4QDJ3U0/v-deo.html You rise with emphasis on your healthy leg, and lower yourself with a stretch on the sore leg. Good luck! And don't get lost! We are waiting for your wonderful videos
@@KentMearig Get well soon! This exercise really helped me with Achilles tendonitis. Raising on your toes on a platform and lowering down while stretching the tendon. You rise with emphasis on your healthy leg, and lower yourself with a stretch on your sick leg. Good luck! And don't get lost! We are waiting for your wonderful videos
Woow beautiful panorama..., i never been in Alaska, only watching on UA-cam..💚💚💚💚👍🌈✨😀
Thank you for watching. Glad I could use this video to share the beauty of Juneau beyond its borders.
I was surprised that you don’t use sticks on such gradients
It would probably be totally foolish to try to race the route without poles, but since we're just out running for the fun of it, poles make it feel less fun. Besides that, I don't own any running poles anyway.
Powerful! Cool dog!
Herbert is SO cool!
As always - wonderful!
Thanks again!
What are the technical characteristics of the race? Length, vertical set?
I wish I would have done a better job of researching and including those details within the video itself, but it's really hard to know without having your own record of the race. I would guess that there's about 15 mi with somewhere over 5000ft of total ascent/descent.
My Lone Peak 7 started to tear already at 200 km :( This is no good at all. The quality of Altra has become very low. I’m slowly starting to look for other shoes
That is so not acceptable. Even when the quality of some pairs seems okay, quality control across the whole batch is still disappointing.
Hello Kent! Cool music!
Thanks, Alex. It's great when you can find music that contributes well to a video.
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Thanks! It was my great pleasure to share.

nice job dad! (this is for the algorithm)
Thank you, daughter.
Altra is about the only shoe i can wear anymore. I'm forever thankful to my orthopedic dr.
Same. Shoes that don't make room for my toes are off the table for me now...makes it almost impossible to find mountaineering boots.
@KentMearig I understand the need for certain shapes of boots and footwear in general, but I definitely agree with you 100% . Before my ACL reconstruction , I was an avid outdoorsman. That changed obviously smh. I'd still enjoy hiking etc but the instability I feel in my knee from boots with a higher heel and narrow toe box just doesn't work any longer. I believe Altra has a few untapped areas .. a true hiking boot ( love to see an Asolo collab or Scarpa ) and work wear.. zero-drop is amazing .
600 miles! I would be really happy with 300-400 miles, do you run on carpets?
Not sure if this is a serious or rhetorical question, but one answer is that the trails I run, even though they are quite technical, rely on the grip of the rubber compound in the outsole 10 times more than the traction from the lugs.
I’m just getting introduced to these shoes and I *love* them! I would normally feel bad about stockpiling shoes, but you almost convince me 😂
My friend and I were just talking recently about how he bought two new pairs of Mont Blancs so that he wouldn't have to feel stingy about wearing his current pair as often as he wants. For me, the stockpiling is worth it!
@@KentMearig great point. There is small a part of me that feels bad for running in them because I want to save them. For what, I don’t know. Perhaps having another pair would resolve that weird idea.
Any updates on the lone peak 8's...are they still in your rotation? Looking at getting a pair and watched your 50 mile video. Thanks!
I got really close to putting out a full review video for the LP8s after 200 mi, but I'm trying to move this channel in a different direction. The Lone Peaks are definitely still in my rotation, but I basically only prefer them over the Mont Blancs when I know it's going to get really wet and I have less than 8mi on the run. I also prefer them for hiking in just about any situation, and I think they're up to about 250mi with no real problems in the outsole or upper and plenty of life left in the midsole.
@@KentMearig Thank you very much. Great reply!
The OG Mont Blanc was the best trail runner in the Altra lineup. I had zero problems with the fit..🏃♂🏃♂🏃♂
Couldn't agree more! Miles 100 to 500 in any pair of Mont Blancs has been the best trail running of my life.
Is it a fast shoe?
@@DevelopingNL That's a tricky question to answer. The Mont Blancs are definitely a light shoe, that helps them feel fast to me. I would say that the midsole falls short of the energy return in elite racing shoes, but I still think it feels bouncy and fun compared to most alternatives once they're broken in. Zero drop shoes don't have the mechanics for speed, but the Mont Blancs have enough of a toe rocker to keep you moving forward.
it is sunday morning nearly 1 am. just going on youtube after a long day and get this video recommended. Thinking "oh what a well made video, nice nature, nice and calm narration, great" stopping after half the video to leave a sub and be shocked by the view count of 60. Continue with what you are doing and its only a matter of time and the mighty algorithm till this gets alot of attention for sure! Thank you!
Your comment means a lot to me when it comes to finding motivation for the work behind these videos, even without the high view count.
What was the permit process you used to do this. I was told you cant
I only ever fly drones that are under 250g, so there is some wiggle room around rules for "full size" drones. Additionally, I mainly fly during off season, off times, and from locations that are less visited. I know that there is a remote plane association that tells people they can't fly drones in the Mendenhall Visitor's Center area, but I haven't actually ever been told the same by forrest service employees.
Hello Kent! Be sure to continue to keep your diaries! Very interesting! Looking forward to the continuation! It's great that your whole family is running! What wonderful, technical and beautiful trails you have there! Just don’t go overboard with the load - you can easily get injured, which will ruin your summer plans!
#1 commenter this small channel has ever seen! Thanks, Alex, and yes, I'm already dialing the load down this week to make sure I'm building into summer carefully.
Thanks, Kent! Looking forward to the continuation! And have a nice summer! :)
You too! I got some great footage of a mountain run today that hopefully won’t just die on my hard drive.
Wow! This really reminded me of a few memories I treasure spending a short time with my cousins one summer as we fished, camped, ate, and had fellowship as they shared with me their home town. Thanks!
Things change, but some wonderful things stay the same. I really appreciate you sharing those memories!
thanks this was cool short edit to watch
So glad you enjoyed it!
Dear Kent, for very close shots you should "hold" focus... not allowing tracking if unnecessary during the shot. Better a slight loss of focus than focus jittering/hunting. Anyway your video is stunning! Great job!
Well, spring in the forrest is stunning anyway. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I don't think about locking focus as often as I should. I also adjusted my camera setting recently to hold the target more tightly, and that will also help.
Thanks, Kent! You amazingly convey the beauty and mood of nature in the amazing places where you live!
Your comments are always so kind. Thank you! I'm hoping to have much more to share over the next few months.
@@KentMearig I look forward to every video, especially the running one :)
Hey man I’m moving to Juneau this summer for school at UAS in the fall. I am beyond excited to get to photograph Juneau, maybe we can collab sometime
Hope UAS turns out to be a great fit for you! Definitely let me know when you get to Juneau. Summer is usually a great time for me to connect with people.
Thanks for the extra effort and setups to take us along on this outing. I loved it!
Might have been better to just ask if you wanted to go for a walk!
beautiful spring
i can't wait for leaves on the trees
Awesome camera work. Those are amazing shots. Thanks!
Thanks for being one of the rare viewers who will watch more than shoe reviews!
Thanks, Kent! Great as always! Be careful, don't take risks!
When it comes to risk, I always think back to something in a book I read that says if you never miss your flight, you're wasting your life showing up too early to the airport. Thanks for watching!
Never been for a run. That looked great. I was super worried about you in that ice though.
Why run when you can ride, right? I guess getting your own feet moving is pretty great sometimes too.
