Lansing Origins: Victor Saier (Full Length Version)
Victor Saier
1891-1967
Professional Baseball Player
Saier played for the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburg Pirates during his eight-year career cut short by an injury. At one time he was known as the “fastest man in baseball.”
He began his career playing for the Lansing Senators in 1910. In 1913 he led the National League with 21 triples. During his career he played every game at first base.
The Saier family had German roots and originally lived in Westphalia before moving to Lansing. The family was instrumental in the establishment of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Saier caught the eye of noted sports columnist Ring Lardner who wrote a poem for him titled “Why Do You Get Your Shirt So Black” a reference to his base stealing skills.
Viv Saier may have been a hometown hero but In 1917 his uncle William Saier made some pro-German comments and he was taken for a ride to the Country Club by a group of Lansing businessmen and tarred and feathered.
The Lansing State Journal the next day ran an article about the incident with the headline “Uncle of Crack Cub First Baseman Gets Coat of Tar.” The State Journal was sued for libel by Saier and noted author John Herrmann wrote his book “Foreign Born” about the incident.

Wonderful interview Geneva. I shared the video with family members from the Munsh Sommer Reunion site
Dr. Johnson was the doctor who delivered me when I was born in 1983.
Love this! Great job, Bill. How interesting.
Bill, that was very important to document. Good for you. I bet your family/friends really appreciate your doing this for posterity. Great job !!!!!
Yes, Many fine comments from siblings, cousins and friends!
thank you
The dude really called The Shiek a minority 😂
My favorite villain when I was a kid a hundred years ago.
I worked with his nephew, always said he was a good guy
Who the hell is this guy? Steve Butts? It might help viewers if we know what gives him the authority to speak about The Sheik, besides maybe being a fan…
Yes. The fans believed he was capable of on sight, mauling, mutilation and murder. The reputation of his ring persona was so strong the fans had a genuine honest to goodness fear of becoming his first known murder victim(s), they jumped out of the way as he ran towards them which gave him the space and time to B-line it toward the locker rooms without having to take a bump from a random fan! The Sheik, Killer Kowalski and Ox Baker are the indispensable top 3 of drawing heat in that order.
The sheik and Abby. The best heels
Loved the Original Shiek ❤
You used my photo without consent and permission.
Supermouth in the house!
Thank you for this video 🍻🍻🔥🔥
The best "Villain" ever.
Rip sheik 😢
Rip sheik 😢

Fascinating! I have relatives in that general area (Stockbridge and Munith.) My mom and my grandmother both got their Masters degrees at the same time in the early 1950’s. Grandma had been the teacher for the one room school house before that.
