Excellent video, as always Chris. I originally had Goodyear Wranglers though I was consistently getting punctures on our "Thorny River" project (Thorny aptly named due to the variety of different thorn trees). I changed to BFG's and managed c.80,000km on a set. This was on my Prado with a combination of towing and not towing and with much of the time spent in the bush and long distance driving. I have yet to see how long the BFG's will last on my "heavy" Hilux, but will bear this video in mind as and when I need to change. If I look at the type of tyres my work colleagues use, then most still use BFG's but many have changed to General Grabbers as they seem to be able to survive the tough exploration terrain similar to the (old?) BFG's.

Hello Chris. That is (was) my green cruiser you showed briefly just after the lookout point. That descent was was my seventh trip down Van Zyls. Five trips in well prepared Hilux Double Cabs, and one in a VW Syncro which did very well. That green cruiser was also very well set up for overlanding but I had just had a front diff locker fitted. I had it engaged for an earlier climb but failed to disengage it for that steep drop. When it was time to steer hard left into the drop the steering resisted because of the locker. It was too late to try and stop and over she went, completely blocking the pass. I couldn't find the right geometry and anchor points to winch it upright again. So it was back up the pass in my son's Hilux to get assistance. Within 24 hours the Cruiser had been completely stripped and everything carried away on donkeys - engine, gearbox, roof tent, fridge, two stainless water tanks, all the wheels, camping kit - the lot. Big loss. I won't make that mistake again. Roger

Do you know if it is possible to flip the lid on the 60L legacy to be end-opening like the 50L? I see in the manuals it says it isn't possible but can't see a reason why not?

I have a NL green box (25A) . And where I live I have very limited access to AGM batteries. I’m currently looking for the largest battery available that will fit in this unit? According to the spec sheet: * Max battery size : 325mm x 180mm x 280mm (L x W x H) * I’ve read in couple of posts on 4x4 community that some NL green box owners were able to fit up to 342 x 173 x 220mm (W x D x H) and 330 x 175 x 195mm (W x D x H) Can you please help to confirming what is actual max I can go in the NL green box in terms of LxWxH Many thanks for any input.

Hi. Nice explanation. Do you know if it comes with a shore power input plug? I have seen that it comes with a battery charger plug, but I'm not sure if you can plug the camping shore power cable straight to the green box. Thank you.

I agree with what you say and am putting in a reclamation and grey water system myself. Yet, we need our phones, video cameras, and computers to produce videos for UA-cam in order to preach against consumerism. So I think we all are part of the problem. And I would add that there are great human rights abuses because of consumerism and great wealth disparities that are destroying others lives.

Hi Chris, thank you for the info. I watched this video almost a year ago. No doubt about the benefits of LiFePO4 and 1 year later, costs have reduced by some margin. I bought a Blue Nova BN13V-108-1.4k with Blue Tooth technology yesterday at a cost of R8,800 (R2.69/kWh). The standard BN13V-108-1.4k battery can now be bought for as low as R7,695 (R2.29/kWh). Yes, initial capital investment still higher, but the business and real life use case is stronger than ever.

Great video, I recommend a better cost-effective choice KG140F, which also has a Bluetooth control function and a 2.4-inch color screen display.

That was a great (and possibly terrifying) Morning Coffee tale Chris. I was fortunate enough to once go on a park drive (at De Wildt) with a guide that loved the African Wild Dog, and he shared his knowledge about them with us. Things like where they 'relieve' themselves and why, how the family dynamic works, to the manner of their hunt and chase, to the cornering and ganged-up approach to their prey, and the reason for the hype and method of kill. He was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about these animals that these 'ugly' endangered animals also found a way into my heart. SPOILER ALERT I'm glad you made it out of that encounter safely.

more info from NL. The NL5 is perfectly suited for charging LiFePO4 batteries in the normal car mode. In this mode the output voltage is set to 14.4V, which is the preferred voltage for most LiFePO4 batteries. Furthermore, just about all LiFePO4 batteries have an internal control circuit (BMS) built into the battery. Its purpose is to protect the battery from damaging conditions, such as voltage that is too high. It will also stop charge when the cells are full. The charger will continue to supply a voltage so that any connected loads (such as a fridge or lights) will be powered by the charger (or Power Pack) without discharging the battery.

hi guys, see below info i got from NL. The NL5 charger is not intended for use with Lithium chemistry. However, despite this, the NL5 charger has been tested and found to be safe for use with LiFePO4 batteries. We have specifically tested it with the Blue Nova batteries and several other brands. It is important to note that the charge mode must be set to the normal “car” mode. Do not use the cold or Boost modes. The NL5 will NOT be able to “wake” a LiFePO4 battery that is in a dormant or standby mode. This can occur if the battery is fully discharged. The Power Pack DC25 does fully support LiFePO4 and will be able to deal with this if it occurs. Kind regards Steven Lambert Product Development National Luna
