HI Drumlab. I'm a 66 year old Drummer and inspired by this video although I know a little somethin' somethin' your Wonderful explanation of Orchestration ideas gets me inspired to learn more even at my age. Thanks Man, I gotta go practice! Peace and Love to Drumlab!
Thanks you so much for the kind words!🙏🏼 I will be making more of these. Have a great weekend😊 my website: www.drumlab.online
I´m playing for about three years by now. And I am also using a VAD 506. Nice to see someone explain the different variants of the million dollar beat in a simple but logical way. If anyone is interested, this is where I am with my skills by now: ua-cam.com/video/wM_OFEpZA6A/v-deo.html
Thanks! 🙏🏼 The snare and cymbals are Roland, but the bass and toms are from Drum Tec. It’s a nice well crafted brand from Germany and they work perfectly with Roland modules😊
Another way is to "change hands" - play all the shuffle patterns with the left instead of the right. Durring my years I have played a lot of blues, and the "double shuffle" is also very common - you shuffle with both hands at the same time. In ZZ-tops "La Grange", Mr. Beard takes it even further - he only shuffles with his left on the snare, but plays straight quarters with his right on the highhat.
Yes, good one👍 I made a separate little video about the double shuffle. One of my favorite things to play. And when comes to La Grange, I think he was also shuffling his bassdrum along with his lefthand which is something that does not come natural to most of us. I tried, it’s hard but mr Beard plays it with ease somehow at a pretty high tempo😮 I heard others play this and almost everyone chooses to go with quarter notes on the bassdrum.
"then you just shuffle the groove"!? If you'r just getting into groove patterns, and maybe just getting your head and your hands around sticking, and finger control " just shuffle the groove" is a whole different feel to straight 4, or 8. Beginners are not going to follow this easily. It's fairly basic groove patterns demonstrated here, but a drummer who is just starting trying out the variations for grooves and patterns is not going to have the 6/8 shuffle feel, the level of competence to follow it. Unfortunately, like all musical skills, every variation, every nuance, every groove pattern and all the necessary skills must be practiced to the "Nth degree" at a slow pace, with special attention to the correct techniques. "Just shuffle the groove" is fine for compentent drummers, but not so easy for people just getting introduced to drumming. Nice video, clearly presented, well explained, except for the leap from 4/4 to 6/8 which requires a bit more than wrist action directed to stick strokes on the Hi-Hat. To learn how to play nicely rounded 6/8 groove patterns watch my own video coming out this year.
Who said this video is for beginners? Drumming is never easy. Believe me I know, I have been teaching for more than 35 years. I’m giving just a quick overview how things can be done and btw, a shuffle does not have much to do with 6/8. Maybe 12/8 but even then I would just say to play 4/4, think triplets and leave the middle triplet out. I actually made a video about that as well😊👍
@@drumlabonline Me too. Shuffle built around triplets, in all it's manifestations, and it's often about the feel not just the hand notation. I can play a shuffle grooves without working around triplet figures just by the orchestration that I use . But I still think it's important to make sure you include all levels of drummers in your explanations as there is always something interesting to learn whether you have been playing for 5 weeks, or for over 50 years, like me. Don't assume everyone who watches your videos knows what you are talking about or demonstrating. When I was starting out in the late 60s, drumming lessons were hard to come by, and very expensive, so learning by doing was the order of the day. But watching and trying to copy highly competent drummers left big gaps in learning technique and left no space for things like groove and feel so I had to go "back to school" after decades of doing the wrong things, so I know how frustrating it is to listen or watch someone and not really be able to follow due to lack of competence.
The thing is, I don’t want to give my hard earned knowledge away for free. I’m actually making these videos to attract drummers to take lessons with me. Then I will dive in deeper into what it actually is that we as drummers should know and do. I refuse to see internet as a free give away. Doesn’t make sense to me. Anyway, happy drumming!😊
@@drumlabonline I absolutely agree. I would like to do the same. Everyone's journey is different, and every drummer brings something new to the table - a different methodology due to one's own experience, and it is all relevant and useful. But it shouldn't just be a giveaway if you have spent years and money developing it. So I'm right with you on that one. Keep those chops buddy I look forward to your videos.
Been 'hacking' at the drums for a few years now. So simple, yet genius in its approach on varying the money groove. Great vid.
Thank you!🙏🏼 Keep it up. The world needs more drummers😊
How come you didn't tell us why this is the "million dollar groove" before you started? If you're going to use something like that in the title, make sure you deliver on the "promise" of what the video is about right away. Otherwise, it feels like clickbait.
I always thought it was a funny name for 1 & 3 on the bass and 2 & 4 on the snare. It is a pretty well known description of this basic but very functional pattern among drummers. And yes ofcourse I try to come up with a title that might sound interesting to people because I would like them to see my videos which at the same time I try to make as authentic as possible.
@ I don’t currently play drums but I love watching Drumeo and other drumming content. Don’t assume everyone watching will automatically know the inside baseball terms. In fact, you might want to assume people watching you are beginners and don’t know anything… but you can educate people on these kinds of terms. :)
Thanks for posting.
I somewhat agree. But it should be said that “song” is a subjective term. I love jazz/rock-fusion “songs”, and they call for the complete opposite ✌🏻🤩
True, but keeping it simple is also subjective. What is easy for one person might be difficult for the other. I think in the end it’s just a personal choice whether to try to play things that you’re not really ready for (with a chance that some day you might become actually good at it). But a lot of times you might ruin things for the band as a whole though. Or… You more or less choose to play the stuff that you’re more comfortable with in order to make the band sound best. I think it’s a pretty critical subject for drummers to think about. I am more a ‘conservative’ player and never had any complaints from other band members. Whatever the style of music we played. Interesting thing to think about in the midst of all the crazy technical stuff that’s pushed on to us through our beloved internet😊
@ Yeah given what “UA-cam drumming” have become I totally agree with you. Today drums seems to be only about speed, and then I choose Phil Rudd every day of the week! And this “new drumming” is to me the essence of not playing for the song. It’s just narcissistic madness. So I think we pretty much agree, whether it’s AC/DC or Mahavishnu Orchestra, more or less the served the song. Now it’s just about serving the drummer without actually ever learning to be a drummer. It’s truly sad 😬😅
Well Said😊
Thanks! 🙏🏼

Electric cymbal but real drum😮
The drums are also electric😊

What kit is this that your using?
nice😊

Thank you!🙏🏼
Whats wrong with playing accents with the left hand?
Nothing really. Sometimes I alternate, sometimes right hand lead. Whatever feels good is what can be used. But let’s say you want all the accents on the floortom, then right hand lead comes in handy because you don’t have to cross your arms. Also it’s always a good thing when you have more options to choose from.
Thanks. I've always been a "play by ear" drummer since High School and I've been able to see how it is written for drumming by watching your videos.
You’re welcome😊 Reading notes is not that hard for drummers. You mainly have to know the duration of a note. (Like 1 beat, 2 beats or half a beat for example). Figuring out where they are in the staff is for the most part almost self explanatory because there are not too many different ‘tastes’. Unlike for example piano with 88 keys and they all have their designated location on the staff.. I started out playing everything by ear as well but after a learned reading , things became more clear in my head. It gives me a better vision if what it actually was that I was doing and it also enabled me to see beyond that enabling me to come up with things that I wouldn’t think of initially. Keep it up!😃👊
This is juts great, thank you. I have started drumming for two months only and these practices are so helpful.
You’re welcome and keep it up! The world needs more drummers😃
newbie Here can you tell me the Fill pattern
Welcome😊 It’s mainly playing single strokes as fast as I can. First on the cymbals with lots of bassdrums underneath. Then fast singles over the toms (no bassdrums there) and closing with RLB (Right Left Bassdrum) with my right hand on the floor and my left hand on the snare. There are many ways to do this. It’s not my strongest thing to do since I am more of a groove player, but this grew upon me over the years by trial and error. It’s not to hard and it works😃 Have fun👊
Very nice
Thanks!🙏🏼
Thank you for the lesson
Thanks very much appreciated.
how much was the drum set
Not as much as you would expect, but still more than enough😅 The bass and toms are from Drumtec, a German company. Look’m up, they’re superb and more affordable than Roland. At least when I bought them quite some time ago. Don’t know how the prices are at the moment.. Snare, hihat and cymbals are from Roland. I upgraded them not too long ago. Snare, hihats and cymbals are from roland. Snare is almost like the real thing, cymbals are ok but the hihat is definately the weakest part when comes to comparing with real hats. Module is td27. Long story short: Go with a Roland module and hook it up to something you can afford. Then upgrade later. Buying everything at once was impossible for me and I’m probably not the only one😊
@@drumlabonline Nice , Im using an MPS-1000 drum currently it's a nice budget acoustic drum alike ekit, You should try playing some Nirvana song i wanna see
Snare hithat and bass minimum first purchase😂@@drumlabonline
Nice!
beginning sounded like the start of "little fury things" by dinosaur jr
What are you doing with your kick?
Hi, I’m playing RLLKick all the way through in 16th notes. Except at the end of a phrase I play one extra bassdrum in order to land on beat 1
Great chop! 🫵😎
Second demonstration played faster, at 0:48, is super cool! 😎
Thank you! 🙏🏼
this is a good teacher, thank you
Good job👍
Nice 👍
25 years later and this song has stood the test of time remarkably well. The drummer did as well! 👍
finding new music is so good man
I wouldn't really call these beats linear. While you are taking your right hand away whenever you play the snare, you aren't doing the same for the bass drum. For a groove to be truly linear, there should be little to no overlapping of different parts of the kit. That being said, great playing and I enjoyed the beats nonetheless
Omg, you’re absolutely right! I should have given this a different name. I think I came up with a title a little to quick. Thank you for pointing this out🙏🏼👊
What drum kit is that I'm looking for one and like the look of yours
Thanks! The bass and toms are Drumtec. The snare and cymbals are Roland and the module is td27. Look into the Drumtec stuff, it’s a german company and they make great looking kits and they trigger perfectly😃
Wow cool
Nice
I've always liked drums, but I finally got a little practice pad and am starting to practice. Subscribed!

John Bonham
Yep, I think he was the one who made this popular, but I will not be surprised if he stole it too. Probably from people like Buddy Rich or other jazz big shots😊
And now, paint that ceiling 😇
You,r actually a inspiraton,top stuff
Thank you so much!🙏🏼 I also do private lessons with Zoom. It’s amazing how good this actually works. You can always do a free trial lesson. Link to the website is in the description😊👍

Wow man this is such an awesome drum lesson I love it.😃👍❤️
Thank you for posting this lesson.
hey Ik merkte in de hoek van de kamer de coole staande lamp. Is dat op basis van een tom? Kan daar wat uitleg bij? THX!
Haha thanks! Nee hoor, niet gemaakt van een tom. Gewoon een hele coole lamp😎
Are those Drum tec heads better than the Roland ones?
They feel very similar to me. Both are great!😊👌
Moved?
Yes! To Madrid😃
