An Eleventh Four for Hermes - four original devotional poems
Here's another quartet of devotional poems honoring Hermes as my Patron, including a ritual invocation, "Welcome, Traveler," and three poems illustrating the God's epithets. "Agent" is also a comment on the sacred Trickster as opposed to a simple troublemaker, "Versus" discusses how true virtue can be misread as moral relativism, and "Manifold" goes meta by illustrating Hermes' diverse roles and epithets.

Ten Four for Hermes: Four original works dedicated to Hermes
Переглядів 124 місяці тому
I'm finally catching up on my backlog of devotional poems and songs for Hermes. This set includes three new poems inspired by epithets of Hermes, plus an older song that fit too well not to be included. "Take," a monologue, is directed to Hermes Sohtir, 'the Savior.' "Ruler of the World" was my attempt to explain His epithet, Pantokrator (literally, 'Ruler of the World'), and the poetic story "...

An explanation of the Four Elements Spread I frequently use with my Alchemist Oracle divination cards, adapted from a similar card layout I learned for Tarot. The Ninth Four: Epithets of Hermes II - four original poems dedicated to Hermes
Переглядів 248 місяців тому
A new set of four poems offered to Hermes, also continuing my series honoring his various epithets. "What Trees?" was inspired not only by the epithet Dendrites ("of the trees") but also by Kedrites ("of the cedars") and the other trees I'd identified while researching the past poem "Sacred to Hermes". "The Whole Truth" began as a satire about mystery cults, then became a gift to Hermes after I...
The Noble Metals - poems about the key metals of alchemy

A compilation of my second series of poems about classical Western alchemy, this set is about the Noble Metals, the seven (plus one) elements representing the steps along the 'Magnum Opus' or Great Work. An Eighth Four For Hermes

The eighth quartet in my ongoing series of devotional poems to Hermes, this set again assigns each poem to one of the God's many epithets. Of the other two, "Serious Business" is dedicated to He...

I have created even more of these name-poems already, and others will be appearing in future compilations. Ultimately, I plan to assign each of...

The First Herm

"The First Herm" is the story of the first of many roadside shrines to Hermes, each an upright stone with a carved face. Most assume the likeness is that of the God, but one story suggests that the first Herm was actually a mortal victim, a man known as "Battus", petrified by Hermes' wrath. This version of the myth is told from Battus' point of view. You can find the written version of this sto...

This new 'video book' compilation, "Social Studies" gathers ten of my original poems about history, current events, politics, and culture, in the frame of a school textbook. "God of the Gymnasium" is older, and just missed the cut for the fourth set. ...

    I learned this game a couple of months ago from an old lady at a café in Norway and I found your video to see if I remembered the rules correct. Great video, thank you for making it. Im pretty sure the old lady taught us that if your up against a mia (or meyer in our case) you could choose to not look at the dice, lose a life and take a new roll without claiming a higher roll. She also didnt teach that you could pass on the previous roll. I think both versions work, and we had alot of fun.

    SOPHIE - Lili You know you don’t belong to us he said unto the child We found you poorly in the swamp deep within the mire Your eyes bright red by moonlight, grey blue before the fire We knew that you were different, a difference deep and wild And we were drawn by deepest love this pen cannot explain No thoughts could ever pass our minds of fleeing from the pain. - The pain of one so young and cold we took from death’s dark claws As you grew within our hovel, submissive, bright and smart A child, a girl with deep black curls, brown skin without a flaw We loved you more as time passed by and death called once again To take the man that you called Pa. You never shed a tear You watched the Moon, you understood as Nature made its claim. - I noticed then you hardly slept, in silent meditation deep Things would move before your stare, you never suffered ills You would sing verse you weren’t taught, draw creatures from their sleep And they would sing along with you, nightbirds, raccoons and frogs Until an orchestra of sound rose up so beautiful to hear Surprising to myself as well, I never suffered fear. - But when you grew past childhood, when blood began to flow You ventured nightly through the woods following the song That seemed to spring from all the trees, song I didn’t know When young men came along to call, they froze at your red eyes And went away not to return, then rumors began to grow Fear from all the Villagers, the stories, hate and cries. - One bright morning we were taken by a tap upon our door Standing there all dressed in brown, four girls of Sophie’s age They came inside and took her hand, outside a man on horse She knew them all, they took a draught, then all sat on the floor A chant began, rose to a scream, the sound was tempest worse They took her then, she bade Goodbye, her happiness I saw. - I live alone, shunned by all, inside my mind I know When Moonlight falls and nightbirds sing I feel that I am blessed She’s watching o’er my life and trials, she brings the sun and snow And as I age I feel her here when chairs and tables move A whisper low, a song I hear, the call of her pet crow. Blessed be.

    Why would anyone declare a number lower than that of they rolled?

    • @nathanlarge4497

      Primarily, to try and lure the next player into calling their bluff, so that second player loses a 'life' or their bid, instead. Also, if the dice get passed all the way around without a new roll and they're forced to re-roll, it will be easier to declare a higher roll than the previous claim.

    CRADLE TO COVEN Lili He'll sing your babes to sleep tonight, you won't hear him, they will He'll brush their brows and croon the sounds, the sweet, sweet songs of Hell While your babies slumber deep, their simple minds repose The lullabies will take them through the night, gently soothe their wills A magick world of moons and stars, their daytime world will close They sleep so deep and softly smile, they're drinking from the well Unknown to all but Ahriman he's kneading their small souls. He plants the seed for later years, it lies on fallow ground But it's alive, biding time, awaiting fertile times As youth matures the seed matures, when questions all arise About the meaning of the life and purpose all abound What they've been taught all through the times is nothing all but lies The seed has sprouted, not all grow, the astute do, their purpose will be found. They'll be set apart from their peers, their goals are different too They seem to know stranger things, deeper parts of life As man bumbles blindly on, with wars and crime and strife The children of our Lord embark, mysteries, questions due So far above the intellect the masses all endure They take the Cloak, the Book, Dark Arts, the power they implore. The Master takes them to his side and what they learn, they teach As others who have smaller plants embedded in their souls Seek to learn the secrets of the Cosmos and the world The Salt, the Water, Blood. The keys of life we reach We take the root, the Mandrake root, the lovely root of trances We learn to fly the darkest nights, the mysteries unfurled. We early learn the dangers of, talking of our Craft The curious come to us with hidden malice, knife And if they find one secret deep the danger will begin The throng with no understanding will scream of taking life But if they kill one single soul, their own lives and their kin Will turn into long misery, the damned of conscience blight. We all seek the knowledge of the ages, joy, enlightenment The Sun, the Moon, the Stars, the Water, Blood and Salt The Rain, the Life, the Earth. The Magick potions of our way We call upon our Gods of life, Ahriman, Baal exalt Tanit, Moloch guide our lives, protect the clans from fray Fill us with the golden light, the spirit, love, we pray.

    in the ending (around 27:30), if A had decided to pass the pot onto B instead of calling it, what options would B have had? Would he then have to roll again and declare that he had beaten the 3-3 roll? Or could B have perhaps NOT rolled again, and just verbally increased his claimed roll to 2-1 (as he already knows 2-1 is what is in the pot). Or does he HAVE TO actually roll the dice again, if that makes sense?

      @@kymbo72 I'm sorry it took so long to get back to this question... Yes, B would have to roll again. If A passed back to B, keeping the 3-3 bid, and B knows that the roll is Mia (2-1) ***because that's what they rolled***, B CANNOT keep passing, since the pot has been passed back "around the circle" to the original roller, who cannot continue to pass with the same bid (this rule still applies, even for the last 2 players). If B does not call (which would a bad idea, knowing that the call is lower than the actual roll), they MUST reroll and must declare a higher bid than the 3-3 previously stated.

    How would the word moon be in the original language? What runes should be used or is there a special rune to represent the moon?

    • @nathanlarge4497
      @nathanlarge4497 2 роки тому

      At least in Norse mythology, the moon is Mani (or Manni), which is also the name of the moon god, a masculine being, unlike the moon goddess found in many mythologies. It's worth noting that the sun itself is Sol, while Sunna is its goddess, and the rune Sowilo embodies more the energies of the sun: warmth, light, and life. I'm not aware of an Elder Futhark rune that is specifically associated with the moon or Mani, in the same way, but if I had to select a rune to represent the moon's powers, I might choose Mannaz, Laguz, or possibly, Jera. Mannaz sounds similar to Mani and is also its first letter-sound. Laguz is related to water, emotion, and reflection, all properties associated with the moon and moonlight. Jera covers cycles and natural order, also properties tied to the moon. You could even create a bind-rune (combination of two or more runes) merging these three symbols, if you need a stronger sigil or signature to invoke the moon. I hope this helps!

    • @Pleyaddes
      @Pleyaddes 2 роки тому

      @@nathanlarge4497 I knew about Mani (or manni) but I wasn't 100% sure, I appreciate your time in responding, you've been very helpful and I thank you for your channel, it's very interesting. For me the Moon is something very important in life for personal reasons and I have the idea of getting the runes tattooed and I don't want to get tattooed without really knowing what I'm getting tattooed, that's why I'm looking for a lot of information. Do you think these runes represent the word Mani phonetically? ( ᛗᚨᚾᛁ )

    • @nathanlarge4497
      @nathanlarge4497 2 роки тому

      @@Pleyaddes Those are the runes I'd use to spell Mani, yes. Before a tattoo, though, I'd do some deeper reading and maybe consult a scholar on Old Norse, just to see if there are deeper connotations or even a specific symbol outside of the Futhark. I'm more a writer who works with the runes for my practice, rather than specifically studied in the original culture.

    Nicely done. I'll have to watch and analyze the whole lot when I'm better rested. Came here for Loki's Ode to Tyr from your reply video. I'm with Jen in suspecting that it wasn't feet Skadi was selecting for a husband, and that a great many things were censured by Snorri's interpretation.

      I'm glad you connected the two poems. There are several works in the set that don't fit the ~1-minute TikTok format, and those two, in particular, needed to be told together. I tend to call those kinds of interpretations "new myths," stories that aren't classical or historical, but fit the same frame. And as regards Skadi... you mean she wasn't as much interested in cleanliness or shapeliness, as relative size? Makes sense, especially if Njord, as a sea god, has big flipper-paddles for swimming.

      @@nathanlarge4497 I think the 2001 rules are less prone to draws because of the placement phase like the seega game.. still hard to get a real strategy? It would be interesting if anyone actually played this in some sort of tournament play like chess.. I wonder if anyone did analysis on its complexity.. I find it hard to believe that the Greeks and Romans played a game for hundreds of years that always ended in repetitive draws.. Kowalski game is unplayable it's always endless draws

    How is 2 & 1 the highest?

      If you mean the roll, Mia, it's just how the rules of the game work. It's something like the two Jacks (the right and left bower) becoming the highest trump cards in Euchre, when normally, they're lower than Ace, King, or Queen.

      I'm glad you found it useful! I didn't even get into the full betting rules, which add another layer of complexity. I plan to make more game tutorials in the coming weeks, as soon as I can decide on the games and practice playing a few times.

    This one hits especially hard six months - and 300,000 preventable deaths - later. Many of the deceased may forgive, some may even still deny the cause, but I'm confident that most are unsympathetic concerning the relative value of their lives versus the temporary comfort, convenience and "freedom" of others.
