    2:24 a rectangular holding blind is not natural. I prefer marks thrown from natural cover such as the middle mark thrown from behind the clump of trees. In AKC field trials the rulebook states that if holding blinds are used, the "throwers should be concealed by a blind that provides complete coverage, adequate space,and natural camouflage to conceal the distinctive shape of the blind" . It would be nice if AKC hunt tests were more natural. Why not use natural cover whenever it is available instead of artificial rectangular holding blinds? It is fairly easy to teach a retriever to mark off an holding blind if the retriever forgot a mark. For example: ua-cam.com/video/Wp-kCEc96Jw/v-deo.html

    A very good video covering all aspects of the Senior test and more. Great discussions of similarities and differences of HRC and AKC tests. The panel is very good and I like that they are not just yes men for each other. There was actually a frank airing of ideas and real discussion. This is so refreshing in these politically correct times of hazy speech. For those of us that are really interested in learning this sport, this is an invaluable video.

    • @CLEANRUNFILMS
      @CLEANRUNFILMS Рік тому

      These are real hunt tests, not re-enactments. Gun handling in AKC is atrocious. After 66 dogs, if better examples existed, I would have used them. What does that say? There are a few good examples and the importance was certainly stressed.

    There is nothing in the rulebook specifying that the handler can not silently sneak up to the line like one would do actually hunting in a jump shooting scenario. Otherwise you are dictating how the handler handles his/her dog. Why not judge the dog work and allow the handler to handle like an actual jump shoot hunting scenario?

  • @RetrieverTrainingAlone
    @RetrieverTrainingAlone Рік тому

    EXCELLENT! Most retrievers handle a diversion bird or "bulldog" as a routine when returning from a mark. Tougher diversion birds would be a sluice shot spraying water as suction in a water blind, or a diversion bird thrown enroute as a "poison bird" during the initial line on a blind retrieve.

    Would it be best that a handler remove their dog from the test if the handler has to restrain it from breaking? This is an opportunity to make correction but is not allowed. (The dog is getting away with bad behavior)

    • @CLEANRUNFILMS
      @CLEANRUNFILMS Рік тому

      2 schools of thought. 1- you paid your entry fee so just go for it or 2- by letting the dog misbehave you are rewarding them by letting them get the birds. I think it depends on what your ultimate goals for the dog are.

    Question. I notice in this video that the handlers are not sitting the dogs when the diversion is thrown. Is that because the video is a training exercise, or is it different in AKC and HRC? I’m teaching my pup is sit on a diversion bird and watch the fall before calling her in.

    • @CLEANRUNFILMS
      @CLEANRUNFILMS Рік тому

      The video is from an actual master test. Dogs aren't required to sit on a diversion but that does add a higher level of control and much less chance of the dog switching. I have a dog the sits on her on own diversions because she has been trained to sit to flush for upland hunting.

      More often than not, handlers will select the next shortest bird for their second bird retrieved after the go bird. This is called secondary selection and the thought is to get the easier bird out of the test quickly.

      You can see it on the judges test dog. We have to be careful to not get in the way and distract the dog. That could have been the case here. Can't recall that far back. Being inconspicuous until the dog is on its way. Have to take what we can get sometimes ;)

    You should consider not filming the bird being thrown after the test dog. Where it lands without the context of how the dog behaved while the bird was being thrown is much less valuable especially in the context of a seminar, the handler and Pat are watching the dog as the birds are coming out that's what I want to watch as I hear Pat's commentary on how the dog is running and handled. Hope this comes across as a polite suggestion, very grateful for this to be available!

    Our professional training programs in the latter days involve primarily family companion/protection, detection, and branching into stockdog work as working dogs are a calling in support to our stockmen in the rural community we serve. However, in 1989, my senior year of HS, I had offers as an assistant from both D.L. Walters and Jane Laman here in Kansas. I went with Jane, and enjoyed baptism into the glorious world of the retriever field trial circuit. All this to say, I have experience in the retriever sports. And my early experience allowed a guided introduction into the sport, which was such a blessing for an 18 y/o green wing. So many don’t get such helps. And for folks young and old, who desire to get into tests and trials with their own dogs, there can be a sense of gnosticism or mysticism that can be a daunting detractor for the uninitiated. My point? THIS CHANNEL AND ITS MANNER OF WRITING AND PRODUCTION IS DEMYSTIFYING AGAINST A NEW HANDLER’S IGNORANCE OF THE ETHOS AND RULES!!! Y’all are doing a good work! So helpful!!! God bless your work!

    As a former finished judge, this was a great film, glad to see it. Gun handling was the most often thing I had to remind handlers, even the pros, I think when handlers get to the line they are so focused on the dog, and the marks, shouldering the gun is on the back of their mind.
