Bingham Canyon and Copper King Mine (CKM&RR)
Приєднався 6 тра 2016
My Trip to Bingham, Rio Tinto Kennecott visitor Experience
I was invited to go to the mine’s visitor center, with the Bingham Canyon History Club, this is a club out of Daybreak, Spring House Village. We went on October 26, 2024, the visitor center was only going to be open for another day, then closed for the season, it will be reopened next April. Anne Sheppard Kurek heads up the group, they have meetings once a month, on this trip she even lined up our tour guide, Charles Leonard, from Spring House Village. It was a nice day and fun to be with the Bingham Club, thanks for the invite. Make sure you stop at the visitor gift shop and pick up a copy of my Book Bingham canyon, it tells the history of Bingham canyon and its people.

The Water Service Gang, Bingham Canyon Mine
Переглядів 45814 днів тому
The waste rock that was placed around the mine dumps had small amounts of copper in it. To recover this small amount of copper they used the leaching process. This was going on for many years at the mine; by the 1960s a more aggressive approach of pumping water up the mountainside to the mine dumps was used. A system of pipes supplied the water and even sprinklers on the dumps. The job of setti...
Copper Notch, New Truck Haulage
Переглядів 33121 день тому
Copper Notch, Kennecott is constructing a haul road through the notch. Truck Haulage came to the mine in 1963, so this image was taken shortly after. Copper notch will become the 6800 tie area (6800 is it elevation at the mine) where most of the new haul trucks parked for shift change. It had fuel stands and lube and coolant stations for the trucks. It also led to code 30 dump, the truck dumps ...
Bingham Canyon Mine 6190 Train Yard
Переглядів 42028 днів тому
The 6190 yard bridged the once canyon, it was a staging yard for trains in the higher elevation of the mine including the truck to train reload stations. The 6190 operation offices were on skids, so they could be moved easily, since this yard was always on the move.

Look at this wonderful image showing one of the first steam shovels and steam train stripping away waste rock. Notice the size of those boulders. The steam locomotive looks like a Davenport (according to the light on front) saddle tank, steam engine, wheel configuration 0-4-0, they were nick named Dinkey. Note the early waste cars made of wood, I bet that didn’t last long, especially with the s...
Bingham Fire Truck 1939

This image shows Ross Marriott June 19, 1939, in Chicago picking up a new fire truck to take back to Bingham Canyon. Ross Marriott was a long-time resident of Bingham, his granddaughter Michael Ann Scroggin said, “He was the fire Chief and very proud of it”. Then we have a photograph of the same firetruck at Bingham, in front of the City Hall building, taken also in 1939.

Robert Cambell Gemmell with Daniel Jackling went to Bingham Canyon to run tests on Enos Wall property. Their resulting report, fall of 1899, will be the catalyst that will become Utah Copper. Both were young mining engineers working for Captain Joseph R. De Lamar at his Golden Gate mine and mill at Mercur Utah.
Short, People staring at the Mine
Переглядів 1602 місяці тому
From the beginning people have been fascinated by the open cut mining operation at Bingham Canyon mine. They just stand there and look in amazement at the work that is going on. Over time the mine management has provided an observation platform so people can view the mine, these have moved over time to different locations as the mine expanded. Music by Dan Johnson.
Proler Steel Plant, just before Bingham Canyon
Переглядів 3422 місяці тому
Proler Steel Company was an independent company built to supply Kennecott Copper Company’s Precipitation Plant with scrap steel, mostly in the form of tin cans. At the Proler Plant, tin cans passed through an open flame to burn off the tin coating, solder and any other foreign material, to produce raw steel. A special thanks to James Belmont, local train photographer, some of his pictures are i...

Diesel Locomotive Roster at Bingham Canyon Mine
Переглядів 2882 місяці тому
Thanks to Don Strack and his utahrails.net, we have a Diesel locomotive roster at Bingham Canyon mine. We look at the roster and try to find photographs to match up with each unit. The Bingham canyon mine had an all-electric railroad for many years, around the late 1920s to the late 1970s so almost 50 years. These electric motors gave them great service for years. In the 1970s Kennecott started...

The amount of growth along the "New Bigham Highway" is insane. I remember cavillation more or less came to an end at 4000 West when I worked at the pit in 1982. There's a 6-lane intersection at that point now. Thanks for your videos!
nice ride along ride tim look like a lot of nice stuff to look at in the visitor center
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Very interesting. Yours is a lot different from ours at the Hull Rust Mine in Hibbing. The road up there is a lot better than ours, and we drive right to the Mineview. We have two mining trucks, a 170 ton Haulpack and a 240 ton Lectra Haul, plus a bunch of other mining artifacts. Active mining for us is about 3000 to 4000 feet away, just outside the blasting safety zone. I'll have to stop there next time I'm out that way.
1970 i went past the Bingham Mine it look amazing then , obviously the hole has gotten even bigger lol ... Its some thing id like to do again but not in Trumpf's USA 😢😢😢😢😢😢
😮you got lucky finding those pictures they are really 😊
Thank you, Dwight, have a great week.
Very cool. Awesome that you have those photos. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the comment.
I know where Levi got the rivets now, still to learn where the blue cotton is grown :)
I think that is where all their copper is going, rivets.
@binghamcanyonandcopperking6339 mine, lol, was a failed attempt at being funny. Great video, brother. 👍🏼 ty
I never considered how much water from rain and snow that they'd have to manage. Great way to utilize it.
Good comment, they never stop pumping water out of the mine.
😮😮 awesome video 👏🏻
Thank you, Dwight, you have a great week!
😮 Those are awesome 😎 pictures nice finds
I think so, thanks Dwight.
If I entered the train room, I would not leave. :)
Thank you, I could make you up a bed.
@binghamcanyonandcopperking6339 Great big smile
Love the old pictures. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I love them myself.
I got a good specimen of the slag from the smelter the mace's and the trips and the burkhart's were the first ones the homestead that land on bullion Street. It looks like it has a lot of lead and copper and silver and gold in it.
Fantastic story Tim. I have never seen these awesome photos of DinkeyVille. I had forgotten that some of the homes / duplexes were very nice residential housing. Thanks for your work and your wonderful photos. Joe
Thanks Joe hope you are doing well!
Thank you for this! The chief engineer's name is Junior Lowell England, and he worked for the Kenecott Copper Corporation. He is known as "Dutch" by those who know him. He's my grandfather. The Garfield Smelter Stack, affectionately known in the family as "the smoke stack," was the pinnacle of Dutch's accomplishments as a professional engineer. After serving as the Commander of a Boeing B-29 Superfrotress in the Army Air Corps during WWII, he attended the University of Utah, becoming a civil engineer. He spent his career working at Kenecott before he passed in 1984. During the smoke stack's design process, Dutch traveled around the world to study similar infrastructure before settling on this impressive design. My understanding is that the stack is a single piece of concrete that resulted from an 84-day continuous pour; helicopters were used to pour the highest portions; the stack is a landmark also utilized in local aviation; and as a technology for mitigating the affects of air pollution, the stack is now obsolete due to advances in air filtration technology as well as unintended consequences of atmospheric dispersion, such as down stream accumulation of pollutants in distant communities.
What a great comment, I'm going to save it Thanks.
Two bridges built in 39 make me think FDR knew trouble was on the horizon :)
That is a good point, Thanks
Awesome chronology.
Thank you!
another great video tim thanks for sharing it
Thanks Dwight, have a great week.
It only takes faith to move mountains these days 😃
Are you saying they did it the hard way! Thanks
@binghamcanyonandcopperking6339 very nicely done :)
@@binghamcanyonandcopperking6339 no, I'm saying there's and easier way :)
Very cool. Love seeing and hearing the history of the mine. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for that comment, it keeps me going.
This is awesome!
Thank you I think so too.
The shovel is probably an early Marion model 91. The same model used, along with Bucyrus 100's, in the Panama Canal. Daniel Jackling used the lessons learned in digging the Panama Canal to apply similar equipment to early surface mining.
Great comment thanks!
steam shovel is cool
Thanks Dwight!
Isn't the morenci mine in Arizona the biggest to open pit copper mine in United States
Thank you for your comment, in my video I say the Bingham Canyon mine is the largest man-made excavation on earth, meaning more material has been removed in this mine then any other. You’re right, there are mines that are bigger covering more square miles.
As always, Tim, a very nice peace. Thank you for keeping this history alive
Thanks, Maddog I really appreciate it.
A well built machine. The famous Crown Coach School Buses were made by a company that also built Fire Engines. That's why they are so rugged and will be kept running like fire engines for many years past what would be considered the usual service life. Just like this Bingham Canyon 1939 Fire Engine.
What a great comment, thank you!
that first fire truck was a really nice one
Thanks Dwight, have a great week.
I'm glad the firetruck is still around making memories for today's children.
You're right, fun times for the kids!
Awesome, Thank you
Thanks, I have always loved fire trucks.
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, have a good week!
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your support!
You made my morning, nicer. TY
That's fun, Thanks!
😮 nice 💯 video Tim 💯
Thanks Dwight!
Very nice documentary... but you wouldn't catch me nowhere even close to that massive thing.. i have a fear of large machines..it's called mechanophobia and i also have a fear of things under water that's called..submechanophobia
Thank you, nice comment!
@@binghamcanyonandcopperking6339 if you think that I'm joking ...I'm am most certainly not you can Google those phobias and you'll see that I'm telling the truth
another great video.. :)
Thanks for the comment.
Great video again.
Thank you for watching.
Hi 👋🏻 Tim another great video 👍🏻
Thanks Dwight!
I remember those two blocks
Thanks!
I'm hungry for Bingham canyon history I wish I could have lived it
I lived some and it was great!
Hey I grew up in Tooele. Its good to know this history. I grew up not far from the site!
Tooele has some cool history!
Glad I found this :)
Thanks!
My father and his family were from Bingham what happened to all the stuff from a town? What I mean is the Police uniforms, city documents, all the schools had photos and records, churches, stores, and hotels. What happen to everything?
I just don't know, a few people saved what they could, many of the pictures in my videos were saved by these people.
nice pictures tim
Thanks Dwight!
It is an awe-inspiring spectacular view that will move the hardest of men.
So true, great comment.
@@binghamcanyonandcopperking6339 I heard it said about the Normandy landing craft :)
@@DavidHuber63 I am a WW2 buff, I agree about Normandy and D-day.
Nice photos, but as a person who is not very tall I am offended by the title of this video "Short People staring at the Mine"... If the people in the photos were tall, would you have made a big deal out of it?? This is just one more example of the prejudice against short people that has always existed in the mining and railroad community. just kidding... 😉
I can't stop laughing, I read the comment before I noticed your name, Short, coma
Yes, some feet. lol
I went up to the visitor's center at the mine last week. They have the plaque up there under a haul truck bed they have on display. Next to a few picnic tables. It's been polished and shined so I didn't recognize it until I looked closer at a picture I took once I got home.
Thanks, when I was looking for it, I did not know I already had a picture of it, that I took at the visitor's center.
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your continuing support!
