Ryobi Zero Turn ZT480e Electric Riding Mower Review 3rd Year (Includes Bagger Info & Battery Issue)
This is a second update in a series of videos about the Ryobi Zero Turn ZT480e Electric Riding Mower. It includes bagger and battery life review, and discusses an issue with the battery indicator. This video is more talking than action and shots of the mower like the previous videos, but it includes a lot of info people were asking about for a long time.

This video is specifically showing the cutting quality and several lawn mowing passes of the Ryobi zero turn ZT480e 42-inch electric riding mower. It is difficult to show cut quality in a video, but hopefully this shows a little of the cutting action and can give you some info about how this mower does in moderately long grass. UPDATE: Detailed Features for Ryobi ZT480e Electric Zero Turn Riding Mower 2019

Here is my updated video with some extra feedback about the Ryobi ZT480e Electric Zero Turn Riding Lawn Mower that I have had for a few weeks now. Overall, I think it is a great mower: I love having no fumes, no real maintenance, minimal vibrations (except bumps on the ground, really), and reliability of starting the mower. It doesn't really bog down or anything (at least it hasn't yet), and it...

Here is my review of Ryobi's new 2019 42-inch ZT480e fully electric lawn mower with two blades, electric drive (no belts), and rechargeable sealed lead-acid batteries. My version is the 75 AH mower, available at Home Depot (also available in 100 AH). My cute son, laughing uncontrollably at me shooting ping pong balls at him from a paper towel roll. Try not to smile or laugh. :) Enjoy!
I just got the 56” deck. It had 20 hours on the clock. That caught my attention in your video. But the mower still had a clean tag under the seat and plastic on the seat adjustment. I’ll let you know how I like it.
So I've had this mower for over two years now, and I've really soured on it. I would not recommend it unless you have an acre or less, and that's with the 100ah model. The batteries are garbage. Even the first season I could only mow half my 2.5 acres. Now, I can't even mow a quarter of it at a time. I'm going to have to spend $1000 on new batteries already. They advertise it as "all the power of gas". Not even close. It's just an outright lie. This thing bogs down in grass that wouldn't even make a gas mower flinch.
Yeah, my yard is just under half acre with lots of obstacles. Had it for 4 seasons now and the batteries are starting to go as well. I think they have issues with the charger (stopping charging too soon) and the battery meter (not including your comments on the batteries themselves). It has been worth it for me, but obviously with a bigger yard like yours (might be over or near the limit for yard size), clearly not worth it.
I've had min for 2 seasons. All last year I could cut all 1.5 acres and gave 30% left. This season I can't finish 1 acre before it is at 15% and stops cutting..... I love everything about it but that. It's a shame I will have to spend almost 2 grand next year to remove e the lead acid batteries and replace with LIPO4's.
Whats the aux key switch for?
Powers the USB/connected devices.
I’m having issues with the blades shutting off, I was mowing and the blades shut off. I shut the blades off and turn it back on and ran for like 1 minute and shut off again. I raised the deck all the way up and turn the blades on same thing ran for like 1 minutes and shut off. I only have like 2 hours in the mower
hey hows it going... i got one last year and its nice, but i cant remember if it came with an adapter to attatch a garden hose for " self cleaning " the deck,,, i cant find a hole on the deck anywhere , and yes i lost my manual, but any help would be appreciated, thanks for the unboxing video, my unboxing was a misery, i dislocated my elbow with a big ryobi drill unscrewing the bolts holding the metal frame together, i broke the front and back of my trailer attempting to drive it off my trailer, but as far as the mower goes i love it, sometimes the meter will say 50 or 40 or 30 % left and i will look at the meter minutes later and it will give me a 10% higher number, its strange.. another question if you can answer or anybody in the comment section.. the black grills 2 of them covering the motors are full of dead grass.. i was going to remove the grills and blow out the grass... all these questions i am asking because ryobi does not provide any cleaning advice in the manuals i found online.
Hey, it is still going well here with the mower. I don't know about self-cleaning, I just scrape off the bottom of the deck with tools and brush manually. I blow off the mower after each use with a leaf blower to keep grass and other debris off the black motor housings to prevent overheating/blocking air flow. Hope this helps.
@@eyeballdoctor2470 thanks for replying and yes i have scraped the bottom of deck also, and removed the motor guards \covers to blow out clippings that accumulated..i am liking mine still
You mentioned at the end of your video, you were curious how the battery would go. How is the battery going now?
how many hrs do you have when charge and how long dose it take to charge when batery flat
Hay Hay whats like with long grass
How are the batteries so far on it? I've heard they don't last that long.
Mine are still working well. This will be year 4, and mine still does the whole yard (with bagging) on one charge (around.4 acres; this as of last fall, of course, since there's still snow on the ground). They are getting weaker, however, as I can tell I get lower on the charge left after mowing. I would guess next year I might have to replace them (so 4-5 year life for how I use the mower). The batteries probably cost twice as much now due to inflation, unfortunately...
Thank you
I see the regular electric mowers from Ryobi are made in the US. But I can’t find out where this one is made. Do you know?
I believe China but not sure.
@@eyeballdoctor2470 thanks. Their line of electric mowers are built in Indiana. I was hoping.
I was so excited to get this lawnmower. Now with only 4 hours on the meter it's blade motors will not reliably engage. Buyer beware.
Don't know what to tell you. Warranty issue I guess.
@@eyeballdoctor2470 yeah. Just getting the word out there. I actually ended up fixing it. Was either a loose connection on the switch or a signal wire on the speed controller for the blade motors. There's some questionable choices they made with the quality of the electronics.
@@sethalump Yeah, thanks for the comments. Unfortunate to hear, but a company like Ryobi (or most other ones, for that matter) are going to make poor decisions on quality often times to save a buck. Annoying, for sure.
how much grass gets caked under the deck after each mow?
Very limited for me. But if you mow when it's wet, I'm sure it happens quite a bit like other mowers as well. Nothing different than normal with this versus other mowers IMO.
Appreciate this follow up video. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Need to be plug when not in use?
Yes, all the time.
does it tow and if yes how much?
I don't know how much, but I use it to pull a dethatcher and it works great. That has quite a bit of resistance I would imagine, but not sure how much.
My Ryobi meter did the same thing. Ryobi replaced twice. Turned out that it was the charger. After they sent me a new charger everything has worked fine for the past 21/2 years.
Thanks for the heads-up! I might be outside the warranty period on mine now but maybe I'll check on that.
Good review. stupid question, I have same unit and cannot figure out how to get to foward or backwards sometimes in some cases in tall grass it stalls, and I can't figure out the exact sequence to get it going again. I've tried turning off the mower with key and moved steering bars forward and backwards and that does not always do it. I did not see this in the manual either. I wonder if I have to hit the low-speed button or one of the other buttons. I only ask b/c this happens sometimes when going down a hill into the woods which I won't be able to get out of unless I go into reverse and when I'm stuck here I can't figure out the exact sequence. If you know let me know, thanks.
Mine is starting to do that now, too, just as of 2 weeks ago. I put bars back to neutral, push down blade-engage toggle, then pull it back up and push the bars forward again and mine works. Sometimes you may have to go back slightly past neutral to reset the drive system, I've found. Hope this helps. Don't know why it happens, though. Some sort of safety mechanism to protect users, engines, and blades I'm sure.
it's like your boat battery and rv battery ... 800-1000 dollars plus every 4 years to replace 4 lead acid batteries ..... hmmmmm
Yeah, supposedly around $180 a battery (maybe more now with inflation and shortages) x 3 or 4 depending on 75AH or 100AH. So $540-$720 every 4-5 years. Still beats gas pushmower to me with other advantages (definitely not cost though lol).
@@eyeballdoctor2470 On my boat the similar ones go for just over 200 each right now even with core return and military discount ..
Do you have the 75 or 100 ah battery in yours? I'm considering this mower for a little under 1 acre. Pretty much no twists or turns. The 100 ah is $600 more so I was hoping 75 would be enough. Thoughts?
I have the 75 AH battery. I think that would be sufficient for your yard based on what you've told me. My yard is 1/2 acre and tons of trees and turns and what not. Can make it through on one charge with 40-50% left after 3 years even.
Re- obi huh
That's how the company itself says it in their training and advertisement videos. You can pronounce it how you want, though, I'm sure they don't care. :)
Are the batteries removable?
Supposedly, yes. I haven't removed them and don't know how easy they are to remove yet, however.
I heard the low cut high cut is for when the grass is wet. Use high when wet.
Do you just spray it off with the water hose what's the best way to clean it
I clean with a leaf blower (to get all the clippings/dust off) and then at end of season take off the deck and get the compacted grass with a metal scraper if needed. Pretty easy.
Are the motors easy to replace when they go bad?
Haven't had to replace anything yet, so don't know. If you're talking blades, looks fairly easy. If you're talking wheel motors, then much more complicated, I would imagine.
Do the blades overlap as they cut?
They do not appear to do so.
@@eyeballdoctor2470 So they leave an uncut strip in the middle?
@@gaztaylorcelebs No, I think they are just very close together but don't overlap necessarily. I don't notice any strip missing generally, but I might be wrong.
The Ryobi website had numerous reviews on it for this mower. Many other people have had the same issues with battery degradation as I have, but all those reviews (both good and bad) have been removed. I purchased this mower in September of 2019. Initially the mower was great for my .75 acre yard. I was able to mow the yard and have about 50% battery remaining. I've always kept the mower parked in my 3 car garage, always plugged in when not in use. Starting around July of 2020 I started not being able to mow my yard on a single charge. I reached out to Ryobi and was told to clean under the deck. I did this and was again able to mow on a single charge, but just barely. Around Jan of 2021 it became increasingly difficult to mow my grass. It now takes 3 charges to get through my .75 acre yard. After filling out my last review, Ryobi reached out, asked when I had bought my mower, and then informed me that because it was more than a year old they could not help me, but they have ordered more batteries, they'd be arriving in August or September. But until then I'm out of luck. I believe that when I initially called and reported a problem, (which there is plenty of history of other users reporting) I should have been covered under the warranty. I believe Ryobi purposely tried to delay dealing with my issue until the mower was out of warranty. I cannot advise you strongly enough to avoid this mower. I now have a $4000 mower, that can't mow my yard, and can't get batteries for to fix. Its also very shady that my previous negative review along with everyone else’s reviews are now missing from the Ryobi website.
Sorry to hear all that! I guess I haven't had the same experience, as I'm on year 3 and mine still works for a .47 acre yard. I knew the batteries wouldn't last forever, but hoping to get 2 more years before ordering new. Did they cover the batteries, or did you have to buy? And what price?
@@eyeballdoctor2470 No they did not cover the batteries. I believe the first time I reached out they were well aware that I had a battery problem, and they delayed offering any help to run out the warranty period. I've gone back and forth with Ryobi many times, and they swear my experience is not abnormal enough for them to help me in anyway. The batteries are actually out of stock, and have been for at least the last 6 months. The only help I've been offered from Home Depot, or Ryobi is to offer to tell me when the get more batteries in stock. The current estimate is August or September. You can find them else where on the internet, but the cheapest is around $200 each. So total cost would be $800, plus shipping. I have 50 hours on my mower. I'm not a battery newbie either. I have Tesla cars, whole house battery backup, and battery everything else( weed eater, edger, blower etc.)
@@CAAT3365 Hmmmm, sounds sketchy. Not cool if they intentionally did that, which I wouldn't put past them. I've seen things like that from other companies.

why can't you get a new battery? They provide the battery info
@@jeremyrawls9394 where should I get the battery from? Ryobi has had it back ordered for a year now. Home Depot discontinued the battery. Random google searches turn up $250+ batteries(remember it takes 4), but if Ryobi and Home Depot can’t get them new from the manufacturer how old do you think the ones are that’d I’d get from some random website? Home Depot refunded me $1000 off the mower after realizing all these issues in an attempt to make the best out of a crummy situation. Both Home Depot and Ryobi have told me they will alert me as soon as they can get new batteries. Last estimate I gots few months ago was September. Haven’t heard anything yet, but fingers crossed.
The battery you’re looking for is the Leoch LPC 12- 75 or 100 depending on which ah you have. You can get these new from numerous sources, including Amazon, that ship in one business day starting at $125 for the 75ah and $150 for the 100ah. Leoch is the OEM battery source but any 12v deep cycle 75 or 100 ah will work. These are the same batteries used in wheelchairs. You want the type with screw in terminals versus the posts. There’s a video on You Tube that shows how to replace them. Good luck

Would you elaborate on the battery apparent charge vs mowing time and what Ryobi told you re the battery display. What exactly is the "known issue " and have they fixed it in the last two years? Is displaying 40% when it's really at 100% the bug ? You said if you plug it back in and let it cook for another, what, day, week, hour? it will show 100% they use 4 regular car batteries. The only use of a char battery is turning the starter, for what... a sec or 2 every trip. It's not 100% duty cycle. With Cub Cadet they use Li Ion which powers Teslas and has for what, 15+ yrs. Per Tesla user wisdom never charge to 100% and let it sit idle. Rule 2 is never regularly charge to 100%. This is easily done. Don't recharge when you're done, rather, charge for 3 hrs before your next use as 3 hrs is roughly 80% doing the later implies rule 1 and would, tesla as a guide, dramatically improve battery life. Is it your experience with ryobi mow to mow that the battery life (time mowing) stays constant over the time you've had it? Thanks!
The display itself is supposedly the bug, though I'm not sure what to believe. I have heard of others that replaced the battery indicator, only to have the same thing happen. So probably not fixed permanently, though I haven't contacted customer service for 1.5 years. I plug it back in for 20 seconds after seeing the 40% and then it often shows back to 100% after unplugging again. My batteries are still working fine, maybe decreased mildly in efficiency. They are supposed to charge all the time when not in use (lead acetate batteries).
@@eyeballdoctor2470 The stories you heard are probably from quite a while ago. I had heard the same so never did anything about it. There was a bug that they fixed about a year and a half ago. Get a new indicator and it will resolve your issue.

HAPPY 4th ..if you had to swap out the batteries are u able to or do you need to basically buy a new machine. I have read the batteries can not be swapped. If the batteries can be changed do u happen to know the cost?
Yes, I believe you can change them. Around $80 per battery, so $240 for 75AH and $320 for the 100AH model. Hope this helps!
@@eyeballdoctor2470 Yes, they can be changed. However, it is about $270 with shipping for each of 4 batteries.
Yes,🌼 allabout.wiki/RY48111 Riding the bag fills up pretty quickly when there are lots of leaves and I guess that is expected. It is quick to take the leaf catching bag off and put it back on. There is one bar with rubber ends that fits into a slot (bottom), one bar with angled ends that hangs on rubber hooks (top), and two stretchy loops that each hang on a rubber hook (one each side). You can hold the leaf catching bag with one hand full and not drop any leaves. It is NOT easy to empty it into a lawn bag without spilling. My trick: I put two lawn bags side-by-side in a large garbage bin and emptied the leaf catching bag into them. What spills falls into the garbage bin. 90% of the leaves end up in the bags this way with 0% back on the lawn.
*I thought this sweeper worked very well.🌼 **allabout.wiki/RY48111** Riding It doesn't pick up every little leaf/twig, but it does a really great job of picking up most easily. I read a lot of mediocre reviews for this before I bought it, so I was skeptical, but it's better than many reviewers give it credit for. Make sure to adjust the height correctly. That's the most important thing, and it's very easy to do. You should be able to feel the brushes brushing the ground. You want that to add a little resistance to your pushing but not so much that it's difficult to keep the sweeper moving. Level ground also helps as plenty of other people have mentioned, but it works fine on hills and slightly uneven ground. My neighbor had a vacuum and OMG I completed 5 bags of leafs before he completed one. One of the best lawn care helpers out their.*

Love this mower!
Just got mine yesterday- came with the bagger kit for $3850 at Home Depot. People concerned about the batteries need to realize- these are sealed lead acid batteries…just like in your car. How long does your car battery last? I work in IT and it’s amazing how similar these batteries are to the ones used in the UPS boxes for server racks. Even has the same type of connector.
Only argument I can see with your comment is these mowers run 100% on battery power, which will wear them out faster versus a car which the alternator is actively charging the battery and supplying power while it's running. Battery is primarily for starting the engine there, so it will last longer not being run down much. That being said, I am hoping these batteries last me 5 years or so before replacing due to lost efficiency.
It's not like your car battery ... it's like your boat battery and rv battery ... 800-1000 dollars plus every 4 years to replace 4 lead acid batteries ..... hmmmmm
How often do you empty your car battery? Car batteries will last for over 5 years when you keep them charged. These are emptied all the time and will not last. First because the chemistry does not like constant high load. Second, they have no balancer. Just plain stupid. The pack has the capacity from the worst cell. There is a reason other companies don’t use lead batteries. But LiFePo4 and a BMS. Right now, easily triple capacity per liter or kg, and they will never wear before the end of the mower. Try to find someone who has done more than 50 charges on these things before having battery problems. You won’t find one. It’s the wrong kind of batteries for the job.
I'm looking at purchasing a zero turn and the Ryobi appears to be more price friendly than other gas or electric. I'm getting an additional adjacent lot and will be too much to mow for a 71 year old with a push mower, but will the Ryobi's battery handle around one acre of mostly flat terrain? Your videos are very informative. Thanks for sharing them.
Hey, Jack! You're welcome. I think it would handle 1 acre without too many obstacles (75AH like mine), but it might run down the batteries pretty low. If you get the 100AH model, you should be good in my opinion. That's what I would do.
I have the 75ah which I got for $3399 at Home Depot a couple seasons ago. I have a little over an acre with 80% of it in the back yard. After finishing the back I normally have 70% battery life remaining. I always use the low speed and the low speed blade cut. My lawn is just too bumpy to run in high speed. I love this mower and use it for everything. It easily pulls two lawn carts in tandem full of debris.
Mine has issues with the charge indicator also. It would show 70% after charging for more than a day or two. Ryobi sent a new gauge and it worked ok for a while but it’s back to doing the same thing. Another strange issue is after using the mower and the gauge shows a low percentage and the key is turned off, then back on again, the gauge will show 40% charge. Happens every time. Gauge will show 10% & shut the blades down. Turn the key off & on & the gauge will read 40%.
Frustrating for sure. I assumed the same thing would happen with mine if replaced, so I haven't yet.
@@eyeballdoctor2470 The indicator on the older machines had issues. You have to get a new one. I just replaced mine yesterday, as a matter of fact. Before the change it said 70% and after it said 100%.
Great video. Thanks for the insight. Great tip on the customer support.
Hey, thanks! Have a good day!
Hello there! did you change to mulching blades and if so are they a better blade? thanks
Yes, and I do think they are better, especially for bagging.
This mower comes with a mulch cover/plug. The mulching blades are a flat design (not curved) and it’s for use for only when you install the side discharge cover/mulch plug cover. The idea behind mulching is that blades continually grind and cut the grass in the deck so that it’s easier for the soil to absorb it, also in theory there is no thatch build up. The regular cutting blade this mower comes with is a curved design, used with discharging out the side or for sucking the grass it up into the bagger. Correct me if I’m wrong?
@@markp6694 Perhaps you are right. I guess the bagger came with blades and I just installed the blades that came with it, assuming they were meant to cut things down smaller to fit in the bag better and also throw the grass harder with more airflow to get the clippings up the chute into the bag. Perhaps I am calling them the wrong thing.
@@eyeballdoctor2470 The curved blades are the bagger blades.
You said get squirrely aren't the lap bars controlling the speed like the normal zero turns
Yes, but much more sensitive and harder to control in full speed mode. More jerky and harder to maneuver.
How do you like the results of the dethatcher? I'm thinking about getting the 54" 115AH version with a bagger and dethatcher. I want to dethatch the clipping and leaves then run over with the bagger.
Well, I use a neighbor's dethatcher (I don't have one). But the mulching blades work well. I like the bagger.
