    Florida Physio is the best PT team in Florida. If you need to recover from an injury and accelerate your physical capabilities for golf, go see them to get an evaluation. It is the best thing I have ever done to allow me to continue playing golf into my 70’s and 80’s.

    Great exercises. Side bend is a move absent in the swings of poor ball strikers and most golf instruction. It is important because changing the angle of the shoulders with side bend in the downswing makes the lead arm more vertical and towards the target at the point the hips reach 45° open, with lagging shoulders reaching just past parallel allowing the mass of the lead arm to accelerate down faster than the shoulder turn at the same time the shaft reaches horizontal and the club head mass is able to whip around the hands. In a swing with side bend the force vector of the club head mass changes to be more at the target through impact than in a swing without side bend. In a swing without side bend through impact the club force vector swinging around the feet will cause the lead elbow to bend immediately after impact resulting in an unbalanced finish. Side bending keeps the trail shoulder back allowing the club force to pull the trail arm ram rod straight and make the trail shoulder socket the axis for rotation. Thanks to how the Vardon grip works biomechanically the trail arm being pulled straight by the club force causes the lead wrist to hinge and max out in extension which in turn causes the lead arm to fold ideally elbow down to guide the club into a well balanced finish. The way side bending allows the trail arm to be pulled straight also acts like the arresting wire on an aircraft carrier, transmitting the remaining club force down arm, body and feet to the ground dramatically slowing down the club (e.g. Freddie Couple’s swing) which also contributes to a better balanced swing and more consistently accurate ball striking. Side bend is truly the “magic move” in golf missing from the swings of recreational golfers, especially those over the age of 40.

      @@floridaphysio The curious thing about human psychology and the golf swing is that if you give a person a rock and tell them to skip it over the water they will make all the correct moves reflexively. But putting a golf club in both hands seems to confuse the brain. 🤔 That’s why non-golf exercises and drills like the ones you suggest are so helpful. Another I find very helpful is to get into golf posture without a club and place the palms of the hand just above the knees. Then slide the lead hand down below the knee, which will force the hips to turn and spine to side bend, shoulders to tilt, and trail hand to be pulled higher on that leg. Then reverse for the downswing side bend action. It creates ideal hip rotation and lateral movement while keeping body in good balance. It’s a variation on the “lawn mower” drill in which a pulling action like starting a gas mower is used, but without the “chicken wing”. 😀
