Day 06 | Twisting Wind | #jamuary2025 | Nymphes | MicroMonsta 2 | TR-6s | Lemondrop
This uptempo jam runs a little long I am afraid. It should be a good tune to have on while you complete your taxes.
Mostly playing with the Lemondrop's X/Y controller and more Low Pass Filter and white noise fun on the Nymphes.
If it ain't broke...

Something a little more upbeat for today. The MM2 is on lead duties. More freehand soloing in this one.

This track features the Micromonsta 2 on bass. To be candid, the Micromonsta 2 and I do not mesh well. I appreciate the sounds, but the UI continues to confound and irritate me. Using double tap vs. long press as a UI metaphor hurts me the way a dedicated shift key does not. The Nymphes, for example, does this exceedingly well. On the other hand, it does have a good patch browser system for its...
Day03 | Boldly Go | #Jamuary2025 | OpSix | Hydrasynth

Whelp, this got jazzy fast. Back in my proper studio, I got a chance to play around with the OpSix and the Hydrasynth. My Arturia KeyLab49 Essentials has a sustain pedal, but no aftertouch and that makes me a sad panda. However, it does have more than enough controls to frob. Enjoy!

Due to high turbulence in my personal life, today’s track was composed on the iOS app Auxy. More hardware jams tomorrow.

[RE-UPLOADED WITH AUDIO] A little different approach this year. Tried to get the micromonsta 2 in the mix. I think I have the wrong TRS-5 Pin midi cable for it, since the unit is not responding well to the controller. Enjoy!

The journey concludes with a modified D dorian drone. During this series, I tried to use all of these synths in ways and roles new to me and I am pleased with the results. Hope you liked them. I will be back tomorrow where I attempt to participate in #jamuary2025. There will be a playlist for that too. Happy 2024, people. Hope your 2025 is even better.

In this one, I rip off an old Peter Gabriel drum pattern and use the Lemondrop for lead. The Typhon is making the weird oscillating white noises. The Nymphes plays the baseline. Started off Eb Phrygian, but morphed into Db minor, I think. Fight it out in the comments below!

This downtempo maudlin rocker is C mixolydian. See? I touch a black key for ultimate synth power!

This one is a little different. This F minor composition leans into the string sounds which are amenable to analog synths.

More practice. Was trying to rip off The Car's opening to Just What I Needed in the way the snare comes in at the beginning. This was somewhat successful. Then I just lost my mind with the filter on the Nymphes. I should note that there is now my guitar effects board out of shot that the nymphes is going through to give it some needed sparkle and, when needed, dirt.

More camera changes! I had to re-orient the table in basement to get to the Christmas table settings. I like the meat of this song, but the solo/melody leaves room for improvement. Again, these basement tape videos are practice for Jamuary, so they are rough and basically live recordings. There is no post-processing of either audio or video content (which will be obvious to viewers). Jamary is ...
More Jamuary practice. #basementtapes

This is a composition in C lydian. It's mostly OK. The overhead camera is new. It is blurry due to the paucity of the lens, but there is something on-brand about that. Also, that angle shows of more of what I am doing on the KSP, which is a plus. Again, this is all practice stuff. No one should feel the need to comment on it, but if the spirit moves thee, have at it.
More basement tape practice for Jamuary

I am building muscle memory with the tools I will be using for Jamuary. There is no real polish to these jams. I am just getting into a flow and seeing where it takes me and what I need to make easier for next time.
More Jamuary Studio Practice. Two Camera Setup. "Complete" song. Feel free to ignore

More of a song this time. Better audio because OBS is doing the recording. Getting better at Midjourney, generated thumbnails, clearly.

Exploration and exposition in a 90s video game
dig the bouncy groove in the bass 🔥 cool synth sounds on top, and it's next level when you bring in the percussion 👏
Cheers! Although I would have like this song to have a shorter runtime, I am pretty happy with how it came out. Thanks for listening!
Very much agreed!
Nice groove with the gliding bass, nymphes right?
Yes, it is! That is based on one of the stock presets. I had to remove the reverb from it and I think shorten the attack.
Major respect, Taskboy!
@@ProfessorOddfellow Happy you stopped by to listen. Cheers!
Scarlett Johansson is cast as the muse "Kira" in the modern remake of "Xanadu" featuring this song. I'll get my roller skates!
Xanadu is one of my wife's favorite movies, so I am not sure I am going to mess with the formula!
@@taskboymusic Sara and I both love it. It was our first date-night movie. :)
Nicely done.
Gotta plat more with the MM2. Thank you!
Cheers, Wabbit. I am using Jamuary to put my nose into some of my lesser used gear.
lovely leads in that white synth on the left 🥰 dig this bassline too👏
Thanks! I probably should have noted somewhere that the order you see the synths in are also the order of the tracks on the KeyStep Pro controller (the keyboard). So when I change something on the KSP's green section, that's the drums, the orange section is the MicroMonsta 2, the yellow is the Lemondrop (natch), and the red is the Nymphes. This will hold true for all the Jamuary videos.
Lovely track. 🙂
Thanks for listening, Oddfellow!
Doesn't seem to hurt your ability to use it to make good music.
"It is a poor shepherd that blames his flock, Apostle. This failure is yours and yours alone!" --Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
Very jazzy, very fast. I like it
@@nanocyde_artist Cheers, Nano. Thanks for listening!
Nice man, i really like the „airy“ Vibes.
@@cravecave505 Cheers! Thanks for listening, Crave Squared! I have a grind that I was going to use this month, but mine has a high noise floor. I'll show it off at some point.
About 70 to 80 seconds in, I really got why you chose the image to accompany this music. Fun!
But also, I made this in a doctor's office waiting for a routine medical test to complete! And I didn't want to mess the 2 day of jamuary. Art imitating life and all!
beautiful soundscaping 👏 love the bass tones, and the percussion is just the right amount of airy 🔥 the wavy synth tones and the lead.... delicious
Cheers! Auxy is a wonderful prototyping tool. Although its sounds are limited, what it does, it does pretty well! My son used it to make game-oriented hyper-music for some time before moving on to FL Studio. Auxy is one of the best MIDI composition DAWs that I have found for iOS. GarageBand on iOS just does not fit my workflow well enough.
Excellent accompaniment with morning ☕️🫡💪🏼🔥👏
Thanks, Wabbit! You get up way earlier than I do! Cheers.
So fun! Always so fun. That's why I keep haunting your channel.
And because you keep haunting my channel is why I am burning sage sticks and worrying rosary beads right now! (j/k). Cheers, Oddfellow.
This is GREAT. I love the off beat bassline. The soundstage is really expansive as well.
When I work in Auxy, I think much more in terms of calls and responses between parts. Don't know why this does not happen for me in other apps and devices. Cheers!
My ears thank you! Here's to smoother air ahead.
Ah the eternal debate: do we need atoms or just electrons? (Hardware vs software synths). This was catchy.
love the 3-ring feel 🥰 plus the spacey explorations, this is an enriching soundscape 🔥
I really love spacey/ethereal trance-inducing music like this!
@@ProfessorOddfellow Cheer! Thanks for listening. I had to redo the video entirely because I dis not capture the audio from the first version. A pox on these new-fangled machines!
You kicked this off strongly 🫡🔥🥂💪
@@krazywabbit Cheers, Wabbit!
In a word: “BEEEEYOOOOOOOOOooooooooo-tiful.” ;)
@@synthseeker Well, it beats the first version which was an uptempo version of Cage's 4'33".
Ah yeah toi got this yellow stuff machine that sounds i like! Good choise!❤
Cheers!
Nice! I definitely need to be giving my Lemondrop some more love.
It is a unit that when I come back to it, I am not disappointed. I am using the same gear for Jamuary.
I swear you bent time with this one, again. I was like, "Wait, the track's over?" Then, "Wait, it's been 3 minutes already?" Masterful!
Cheers, Oddfellow! Happy you enjoyed it.
Tomorrow we I’ll be fun for a MONTH!
That is the plan anyway…
love how this has a holiday jingle element to it, while also bringing the strong kicks and synths 🔥
@@Reconsiderate Cheers, @reconsiderate.
I agree! Perfect soundscape for the threshold to the new year. Wintry, full of mystery. ☃
Just e-mailed you a quick question re: this track. :-)
You really warped time with this one. I was like, "Why was this song only 30 seconds or so?" Then I saw that it's nearly 3 minutes long. Also: this track is easily a new favorite.
Well this comment is easily my favorite! Cheers, Oddfellow.
How cool is this? (I'll answer my rhetorical question with "Very!")
love the quasi-lofi vibes 🥰 warm tones and interesting supplementary sounds, dig the gentle melodies 🔥 PS your content is so satisfying and varied 👏 +1 sub!
Cheers, @Reconsiderate! I am happy you are enjoying these basement tapes. This series is focused on maintaining the discipline of daily music creation over all over considerations. There are more polished tracks available on this channel and soundcloud (soundcloud.com/taskboy3000).
nice explorations and resolutions 👏
Cheers!
WOW this is so rockin 🔥 love the synth tones, melodies, and cool modulations 👏
You are providing me inspiration and distraction. Thank you! You are definitely the master of entertainingly-weird timbres. The rig is working well I think!
Thanks, Luke! I am trying to wring out new sounds from these units. I am consciously rotating the roles each synth takes in a given track. As you say, four “tracks” is really enough to sketch out a tune!
This has a great groove and the timbres really grow on you. By about 2:47 I'm back in the 80's.
What do you mean "back"? :-D
80's Rom-Com about a robot that falls in love with a human? :)
It was call "Love Never Bytes" and it starred a young Ricky Gervais as the luckless robot lothario who tries but fails every week to charm a new love interest. The show pulled in some amazing actresses of the period including Cybil Shepard, Ally McGraw, Happy Day's own Erin Moran. There was even a famous (and puzzling) cameo by the great Lauren Bacall whose utterance of the show's tag line "Ouch, my circuits!" became a successful pickup line for about a month in 1983. The noisy brat neighbor was played by Drew Barrymore!
@@taskboymusic Classic! I bet it got a Golden Turkey Award!
Oh yeah, love this atmosphere! Dreamy, ethereal, very evocative and cinematic. Love that beat build around 2:50-something. Really impressive, and if you're taking votes, I hope you'll revisit and further develop this track.
@@ProfessorOddfellow Cheers, Oddfellow. This tune follows an old formula I learned as a kid, so you can expect to hear another iteration of it in Jamuary!
Nice sounds
@@krazywabbit Cheers, Wabbit! Thanks for the listen.
coolio! Sounds like you are having fun!
Exactly! More fun with filters and white noise in Jamuary!
I like this! I get a Cars vibe, for sure, but of course I don't know if your description /suggested/ the connection before I heard the music. Very catchy riff.
Thanks, Oddfellow. The jam hits a stride around the 2:00 mark.
Don’t burn out before January even starts!
I won't! I am getting comfortable with the basement setup and gear. I want the Jamuary tracks to move outside of my comfort zone (which this series does not do). I am learning more about the KSP and the Bluebox, which are the two bits of gear essential to the production.
Charming song!
Thanks for listening!
Im looking forward to hearing your Jamuary stuff for sure.
Right back at you! I hope Santa brings me a Move. That will be a February toy...
Flash! Aaah-aaaah! (Sorry that initial timbre reminded me of Flash Gordon.) 🎉
Nymphes is *weird*. ;)
How is that a bad thing? Yes, the nymphes can make weird noises, as I hope to explore more in January. The Typhon’s filter is equally squelchy.
@@JoeJohnston-taskboy I didn't mean BAD. I meant weird bloops...which I *like*. :P
sounds good!
Cheers, Wabbit!
The first notes of your riff remind me of Disneyland's great Haunted Mansion theme. :-)
@@ProfessorOddfellow Higher praise cannot be asked for. Cheers, Oddfellow!
Very fun sounds!
Cheers, Prof.! As I eluded too, the next wek of videos are just documenting me practicing with my gear for Jamuary. I would like to post one video a day then, but my life has a rather a lot of obligations that do preempt my art and my hobby. Still, as I have observed from many other people over the years, doing a solid month of practice on art will show signs of improvement at the end.
🙂
