OZMO live painting at King's College London – the Workshop of the Icons
This short film by Frankie Caradonna records a ten-day live painting by OZMO as part of the "Workshop of Icons”, curated by Cristina Boschetti, James Cahill and Will Wootton. It took place at the invitation of the Classics Department of King's College London, King's Culture and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
The Italian artist OZMO is well known on the international scene for his numerous public art interventions. For ten days the artist worked in a temporary studio set up in the Arcade Gallery of Bush House, overlooking the Strand. Passing members of the public contributed images which, day by day, were mixed with those selected from the archive of eminent British archaeologist and art historian Bernard Ashmole (1894-1988) and now owned by King's College London.
The result is a monumental pyramidal pictorial composition "Peace in Pieces", which evokes an imaginative Greek temple pediment. The center of the composition is dominated by Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace, who has her back to the viewer, while she converses with the icons of classical art and with the symbols of the present time. The image celebrates the political value of classical art, born for the city and to communicate with the community.
“Peace in Pieces” was created during April and then exhibited in the window of the King's Strand Shop (171 Strand) until June 2023.

Looking at this craftsman and the amount of time it takes for just this piece begs the question:" How did the great cathedrals find craftsman at this level (and so many) as to be able to build their great cathedrals. For years I was very curious about how the vertical flutings were so perfectly spaced and made on columns, as far back as the Greeks! Today, we would rotate stone (and they do) on a lathe. But the old masters had to use other methods. Think about cutting all those large pieces of special wood for structural purposes. Did the use a two man saw? Even so, what a task. And all the Ionic, Doric and Corinthian ornamentation was HAND CARVED, no molds. These had to be very special men with great pride .

Is there another video on the next step in the process? How would you remove the chisel marks? How does it get smoothed out and polished? I am a woodworer that enjoys wood carving but this looks so fun. I must learn. Forgive me if this information is already there and I missed it thank you

Thank you for publishing this interview. It ideally complements what I have recently seen in Rome and also here on UA-cam, it addresses many of the questions that have arisen from those sightings. Obviously we will never know exactly, but Peter Rockwell went a long way in providing us with educated answers.

What kind of stone is this? It’s beautiful, and looks like it carves really nicely! I’ve only carved in sandstone and in granite, (marble and limestone are not so readily available where I am) please let me know what that is! Also beautiful chisels... I like the design.. are the ends rounded so they don’t mushroom from the Mallet?
