    After reading the chapter on Buddhism, I feel like I am questioning everything I know about it and am not sure how to feel about the religion. So interesting!

    Do you read english texts or can you read Greek texts. You are not mentioning nong any of Galen medical terms. No mention of the actual secret rites. Just reference to it. Dr Ammon Hillman PhD wrote a book Chemical Muse. You did not mention the eunucjs, or "perpetual virgins" or the Theriac (7 venoms plus about 52 other animal, vehetable, and minesl ingredients). Dr. Hillman has a yiutube channel Lady Babylon.

    You're changing my life here with this walkthrough omg. I've had some signs of Horus/Isis coming into my life and did research on Hygeia recently as well since I felt called to her. My partner has also built out his own sanctuary and I've been dreaming of hosting retreats there and opening up a food truck. I also practice oneiromancy, so this video was just incredible to watch. Mindblowing even. Watching this whole thing felt so eerie to me! Thank you for posting this and thus bringing all of these things in my life together. I'm incredibly excited to get started on my path and bring back these aspects of Asklepios and the Asclepiades.

    I'm sure there was bleakness but characters like Easter and even Dyeus Pater or the idea of all life coming from a seeming void are also mystical images of an ultimately benevolent and life giving order. One can even see the idea of reincarnation there and obviously expressed in other Indo European religions. The cyclical nature of this vision is inherently asserting an eternal reality that all are of.

    What is often missed in discussions of the classical period is the stripping down of complexity to highlight and pinpoint psychological states more clearly and effectively. This stripping down is also most apparent in the Rococo or Gallant phase of early Classicism. By the time you get to Beethoven and Shubert, the merging of "Baroque complexity" with Classical austerity had already begun.

    Oracles were powerful and wealthy from the traffic of pilgrims. They were also gathering sites for people from all over the Middle East and as such served the purpose of intelligence gathering by the priestesses who were old and dressed in rags at Dodona. The intel that was gathered there also added to the power of the oracles. Very nice tour, knowledgeable narration.

    Kudos Jeffrey Winkle. Other names are kippa rings or bora rings for initation circles. Tjurunga, Churinga is another variant. Didgeridoo is strictly men's business, no woman or girl may play, carry or even so much as touch a didgeridoo - the penalty for any female who dared break this taboo would be permanent tribal expulsion & banishment, or death. This '69 model Aussie of English descent called it Ayers Rock in my day {dark-ages} at school, but since around 1995, popularly Uluru has become the commonly used name. Uluru is the official respectful original name of this palpably sacred monolith {which is absolutely gimungous, photos do it no justice} all Aussie men women & children call it Uluru now - Uluru is the name {finally truth being told} taught in schools - rightly so ...always was ...always will be🪃

    I wonder why it required so much secrecy? It sounds like a beautiful thing that acted as an emotional panacea for all those who became initiates. If something was inexplicable then it wasn't explicable to other people--no harm no foul but to initiate death sentences for those who tried to explain it is utterly bizarre. It sounds like the hidden thing was its inefficacy. And that's why it died out.

    • @jeffreywinkle8162
      @jeffreywinkle8162 Рік тому

      Good questions. I think the "secrecy" part added a needed prestige to the rites, especially as an antidote to the public festivals/sacrifices about which there was little, to no "mystery". As for the the death penalty, I don't believe there is any evidence that it was ever actually carried out (though close with the famous Alcibiades episode), and may have been another detail which underlined the seriousness of the rites (again, as opposed to the common, public expressions of religion everywhere). The rites must have offered SOMETHING...they would not have survived for 1000 years if they didn't. I think the better explanation for their disappearance is both the crumbling of the Roman Empire (Eleusis was sacked and looted in the 4th century and was never rebuilt) and the rapid spread of Christianity, post-Constantine. Thanks for your comment!

      In the Greek mythology(and Roman, for that matter) secrecy was revered in the realm of the divine as a sign of piety and respect. Think what happens in myths when gods reveal their true form?(Semele, Prometheus, Demeter herself to Celeus and his wife). In general, even in public festivals, some kind of decorum and discretion was expected

    As I'm listening to your video, thank you, this particular myth of a mother & her daughter, has a very practical meaning for every day Greeks, because when a young girl married, perhaps only 12, 13, 14, she would join the husband's family and living any distance at all, would only rarely see her mother again, if at all... Plus many young brides would die in childbirth, so many, especially underdeveloped girls. These are real world consequences of marriage in antiquity, powerful! Speaking of "bindings", that's a mark of Hermes, aka The Good Shepherd; The Immortal Guide; the most human of the gods; messenger, etc. (Fortress of Lugh YT channel, "Hermes: The Immortal Guide", excellent detailed research & visuals!). Lastly, there is a theory out there, relatively new, where comparative myth & science are combining to challenge our understanding of ancient myth & symbols! An extraordinary theory which I think ALL classicists & scholars MUST consider in ANY examination of myth! Myth that goes back much farther in time, but is undeniable in its forms! Please take the time, Symbols of an Alien Sky, link below, and part 2, Thunderbolts of the Gods, well worth your time. ua-cam.com/video/t7EAlTcZFwY/v-deo.html

    Seems to me sort of like much of these peoples' culture they seem to remember, but My guess would be something had happened in their past for much of the true meaning to be lost of 'why' these artifacts, symbols, instruments, etc.. are as sacred as they are.

    I've been to Sankt Marx Friedhof to eat lunch with him. The monument is nice, but it felt like a red herring. Mozart's first biography was written by a man who's buried in a _very_ interesting place, especially when you take into account that mozart was allegedly left out on the curb within a couple hours of his death. I'd say if you're looking for Mozart, don't look in Vienna. :)
