Building Don Lancaster's ASCII Keyboard

In this video, I build Don Lancaster's "low cost keyboard" that was featured in the February 1973 issue of Radio Electronics. You can get a free copy of the TV Typewriter Cookbook in addition the the article presented here at world radio history. The book has detailed theory on how the various circuits work. There are also a couple of articles in other editions of Radio Electronics for building an on screen clock for your TV. One uses discrete TTL circuits and works much like the TVT. The other article uses two custom MOS chips. One does all the video work and another the wall clock chip - early ASICS, good luck finding those!

You’re welcome. More to come! I might make a video about the process. It can sometimes be time consuming but I’ve done it so often that I can create a Gerber for a PCB fairly quickly now. Of course, the image has to be good quality. Yes, I use KiCAD for that.

@@artemkalinchuk i think finding the parts, or similar ones, will be painfully difficult, and EXPENSIVE. instead of generating the octaves, dividing them down and playing one at a time, it's massive polyphony. afair, as designed, 40 something notes, meaning 40 individual synths on a deck of circuit boards. then there's finding the top octave generator chips, dreadfully hard.

There are several types of stabilizers for MX style switch. The one you use is plate mount variant which is mounted on a plate (usually for the stability and make the switch align). I suggest you to use the PCB mount either the screw in or the clip in. And if you didn't already know, there's actually a community for keyboard enthusiast

I built one of these in the early 70's, I also designed and built a rudimentary graphics addon to the TV Typewriter. It had a 128 by 128 dot array, if my memory serves. I still have the monster in my attic....

@@artemkalinchuk I still have mine too, although my cat stole a few parts. Keyboard had a lot of diodes to drive the ASCII. And I didn't have a small TV, so I used an old console model with the legs cut off. So the display sat on the floor, the TV Typewriter sat on top, and as I typed, I had to read the screen between my legs. Eventually built an acoustic coupler modem for it. Used that to log in to the mainframe at The University of Texas. For a 300 baud modem it worked pretty well. Unfortunately, I never got around to building a housing for it. So everyone in the room had to be fairly quiet, and if you sneezed, you got half a line of trash.

Yep, it’s Ben Eaters 8-bit computer. I think it’s a great and educational build. Building and understanding this computer is like getting a degree in CS. Modern CS programs are all over the place so students can’t really piece it all together. Learning about computer parts and building a computer from scratch is a much better approach to learning.

I would have liked to see more about some of the logic on how the ASCII encoder worked, I'm guessing it's a large multiplexer with cross over logic, but a truth table or some discussion on that would have been nice. The images aren't clear enough to read it off the shown pages.

There were some problems with the original TY Typewriter design. Ed Colle did a redesign for SWTP and that became the CT-1024. Colle's design started out as a customer programmer for electronic message board signs. Ed designed the electronics for the signs which had 504 150Watt flood lamps on each side. That company, Seso Corporation, went away in 1973. I was part of the field service team.

In the summer of 1974, I made friends with a high school student who built that TV typewriter and brought it to the Connecticut State Science Fair. He said that the “cursor board was aptly named” because of how difficult it was to debug. It also turns out that the Molex connectors are a source of flakiness. Later, in high school, I built the TVT-2. With the 2102 static RAM and next generation design, the TVT-2 was much more reliable, but still sometimes flaky.

I was in high school in 1974-1978. And our AV studio had a tv typewriter attached to the school tv monitors for daily announcements. It broke an my teacher asked me to look at it. I had all of Don's cookbooks and was learing digital logic. But I was not prepared for the serial memory architecture.. it taught me a lot.. poor solder joints and the board stack connectors made debugging difficult .. and the original builder had added genlock to sync to studio cameras for titling video.. long story lots of learning and memories .. I don't remember the actual problem .. but probably a bad solder joint or mechanical issue. The stack of boards made debugging difficult. Along with poor scopes of the day. This lead me to bud my own 6502 home brew computer in 1977 and start my journey. Glad to see you building one again!

What an incredible coincidence haha, just 3 days ago I was also building a keyboard from scratch, to replace a missing one for Commdore SX-64 - and I used the exact same key cap set from amazon 😂 Though in my case I was less fortunate because I required an exact wiring scheme for the 25 pin connector, so instead of having a PCB I had to solder every single connection with wires manually (pain)

Oh wow, that’s pretty cool! Yeah, I can imagine how painful it may have been.

It would be interesting to see a build of one or more of Lancaster’s “Cheap Video” circuits for ‘70s hobbyist microcomputer systems.

I worry about using 12V with 10V electrolytics, probably within tolerance but they might be apt to fail prematurely. The waveforms you got at 10V shouldn't be a problem for TTL logic, it's very forgiving.

That’s a good point. I didn’t go deep with the 12v test but it looks like some changes might need to be made for it to work well (caps and zener diode).

It's a common problem these, days, you come across a nice (old) project you want to build, but no PCB manufacturer wants to know about the PCB artworks that comes with them, they only except a gerber file.

Pinned Sockets would be much better, but I understand why your putting in those slip-sockets. I won't buy anything from Fleece-Bay! 👎 --- You wouldn't be able to please everyone, so NO music is a better idea!

I like pinned sockets too but I was trying to make it "authentic" :) I get why you don't like Fleece-Bay but, unfortunately, sometimes its the only place that has specific parts.
