Minimalist or complex? How I simplify composing the landscape | Winter 2024 (Episode 4)

The fourth entry from my winter landscape photography trip to the Scottish Highlands. In this episode, I start at Loch Assynt with an easy shoot-well deserved after running round the moorland in wellington boots for the last two days. After the morning's photography, I decide to drive a bit further north. I expected to make it to Kylesku Bridge, but not much further. After several hours of driv...

The second entry in a series documenting my winter landscape photography trip to the Scottish Highlands. In this episode, I'm in my favourite location, but things just aren't clicking. Wow. Instant subscribe. Fabulous work backed up with some really interesting "behind the scenes" thinking. That area is my "back yard", being only an hour or so from home. It's too easy to take it for granted and it's always a good reminder to see someone putting in the huge effort to travel there and make so much of the landscape. By the way, I agree, with the Ardvreck Castle shot, landscape works better. The format echoes the horizontal layers of the rocks in the water. By contrast, the square crop seemed a bit too constrained. Looking forward to watching the rest of this series.

      😊 Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you like the BTS pieces to camera. I want to relate what it's actually like on a photo trip - not only the atmosphere of the place, but also the process behind images. You're a lucky man being so close to such beauty, but easy to take for granted when you're so close. I hardly spend any time photographing the Somerset levels or Dartmoor despite being close. My next trip north is on Friday - heading to Harris this time as I haven't been there for a couple of years. I'll be busy editing another series over a few months. Fingers crossed for good (good for photography) weather!

      My wife said the same thing when she watched. And ultimately I think you're both right. When I was editing, I couldn't find a way to cut it without removing a story element that I wanted to tell, but it does detract from the peace of the video - and I probably should have tried harder to work that section without it. That's a grand total £1 in the swear jar at work 🤐

  • @andycakebread7663
    @andycakebread7663 25 днів тому

    Tweaking and revisiting? I agree. I'm still processing images from two years or more ago, as my memories meander through time I find my feelings for that time and place go with them. This for me directly influences post-shoot 'light' manipulation.... this was meant to be posted in the Assynt one but I'd skipped to here🤦

    • @eallistone
      @eallistone 23 дні тому

      I'm glad you can relate. So many shots I get really excited about out in the field don't call me to edit when I first put them in Lightroom; then I go back to them a few years later and wonder why I didn't give them any attention. And then there are the reedits that you thought were done and dusted! It is a nice feeling to have a bank of shots to return to though. I think the light manipulation after the fact should be led by memory. Don't get me wrong, I don't like going too far from the visual experience of a place, but the moment that you capture a photo isn't the whole story: the way you feel about a place and the atmosphere often needs to come into the photo though creative contrast adjustments and (sometimes heavy) dodging and burning.

  • @andycakebread7663
    @andycakebread7663 25 днів тому

    Again, great video Ed. I do disagree though. I find the images at c7 mins thoroughly absorbing. Like your video, they not only take us somewhere but they convey the place and time. And the second one pulls you (me!) in because of that icy water triangle.

    • @eallistone
      @eallistone 23 дні тому

      Interesting. I like the elements in those images too. I am just never sure about the visual flow of a landscape image. I place subjects in different areas and they feel a little less connected than they do in a vertical or square image. I need to practice grand landscape shots more more to see what works. I've been watching more movies recently and paying attention to the way the cinematographer composes for panoramic shots-hoping that will help :)

    @andycakebread7663 26 днів тому

    I agree with the landscape crop. Just tripped over you and I'm enjoying this a lot - especially as I veer towards b&w so seeing through colour here is great 👍 Been Loyal shot - it's a little formulaic but great for it as those foreground rocks are directly related to the big cousins in the background that'll be going the way of the foreground. That's why I love that one 👏

    • @eallistone
      @eallistone 25 днів тому

      Thanks for the feedback on the vids. I'm glad you found me on here and are enjoying the content. I very rarely think in BnW, but I do like a simplified colour palette - too much to think about otherwise. That image with the rainbow was borderline too garish for me to puzzle out! Totally agree about the Ben Loyal shot - very simple, but sometimes you've got to let the subjects do the work. If I was being ultra critical, I would have liked the foreground rocks to be a little closer to their mountain cousins to better emphasize their relationship, but I couldn't get my tripod any lower into the heather it was perched on. Some day I'll do an out take video with all the Twister-like contortions I get into while out shooting. I'm sure other photographers can relate 😂

    Assynt to Tongue is hardly an exhausting day's driving no matter how many stops you make, likewise the North of Scotland rarely sees snow below the peaks.

    • @eallistone
      @eallistone Місяць тому

      That's true, but Bristol to Tongue while car camping and filming every waking minute is quite exhausting. If you can imagine the process: I drive a road, think 'that will look nice from the air,' find a safe place to launch the drone, set a path for it, and film that path with me driving a few times until I have the timing right. Rinse and repeat all day. Like that, the drive from Loch Assynt to Tongue took about 7 hours with some pit stops. I guess it depends where you mean about snow in the north of Scotland. Even the milder areas like the Hebrides get a little and my friend who lives in Tongue seems to get snowed in a few weeks every year. Likewise, I see the snow gates closed in the Cairngorms quite frequently when I check the webcams.

Some of these earlier videos suffer a little in sound quality, but I was really pleased with them for the resulting images, and they worked as a proof of concept; this whole Wales Summer 2023 series was filmed on my phone to see if I liked the process enough to take it more seriously. The Scots pines are lovely. Try a walk up Sgurr an Fhidhleir for dawn next time you are up there. Keep at it, quality pays off.

      Thank you. Yes. This one took a while. Learning on the job as well which is time consuming. I like the wider shots too. I still find it hard to compose in landscape, but I'm enjoying thinking about it a bit more - especially when I frame up for the video. I've wanted to do that for a walk for a while. I'll try to fit it in next time I'm there 🥾

    I'm assuming you shoot raw so editing needs more than colour balance tweaks as you say with your focus stacks. Unless of course you are aiming for flat images that don't resemble what you shot.

    • @eallistone
      @eallistone Місяць тому

      I do shoot raw so breathing life back into it is important, but even if I shot jpg, I would edit almost as much. Digital sensors favour certain colours which can need subduing. On top of this, I like an edit to help the viewer to be led through the image - so a little bit of interpretative grading helps get across the feeling of the place.

    Well Ed...as much as I love the videos you post & the documenting of your trips around the spectacular Highlands, as well as seeing your excellent photography on a bigger screen to really appreciate them,,,the thing I find most enjoyable is your near forensic analysis of composition/light/weather...it`s so refreshing to see this instead of the majority of YT photographer`s dross output 👏

    • @eallistone
      @eallistone Місяць тому

      Thank you. I enjoy dissecting the compositions for the video. Really helps me make the process of editing conscious. I've tried to make these videos something that I would find useful and engaging. I've always recorded videos to myself talking through thought processes, and when I started doing these photo trips, I was sharing them in IG stories. I thought that putting those two things together would make something that would provide value. I also naively assumed I was already doing 90% of work, so making a vlog out of it wouldn't be that hard - turns out that I was only doing 1% of the work. But feedback like this makes the effort worthwhile 👌

    Beautiful litlle video Ed...looked gorgeous with the white tops on the peaks...I did notice at the beginning all your clothes on the dash drying off as you were driving along 🤣🤣🤣 Sorry we never got around to organising that trip earlier in the year, work has been overwhelming 🙄
