Past is prologue. For Trump, Non-Millionaire White Americans had value only to the extent that they clung to the illusion of White Supremacy, and would vote against their own interests. Not unlike Wealthy White Owner’s regard for poor, illiterate, deluded White Overseers, in 1800’s Virginia.

"If you ain't better than a nigger son,who are you better than." This way of thinking by many whites today describes the unquenchable thirst for power, control, dominance, and supremacy that some in white society push for in today's times. Brilliant film great acting.

Historically, people hate because, if they have not focused on self-improvement through education, culture, etc. they need someone to look down upon to give them a sense of identity and purpose. Hate is also found in populaces that have a collective lack of self-esteem. For example, Germany was a complete mess after WWI after their defeat. Scapegoating (blaming) non-Christians, scholars, immigrants, etc. gave them a new sense of purpose and easy targets. The same is true in the United States today. The U.S. is now bottom of the barrel of all other advanced countries due to our lack of livable wages (caused by our having a deplorably low minimum wage), lack of upward mobility (we have fallen to 27th versus Canada's 4th ranking), an indefensible profit-based healthcare model that ranks 37th in the world in cost, access, and outcomes, and we also have the highest childhood poverty rate of any advanced country as well as the highest incarceration rate of ANY country. As a result, Americans are seeking easy targets to blame for how bad things have gotten, so half the country is now blaming the same marginalized groups the Nazis blamed.

Every psychological experiment has demonstrated that humans are inherently tribal and at times of stress, this tribalism is heightened. Rich and powerful people have employed this knowledge to keep diverse groups at each other's throats for all of eternity.

To Gene's character's point about the kids "being used." I think that the volunteers were made aware, to some degree, of the danger they would be in. The virulent racism in the Deep South was no secret. The fact that outsiders had to go down there was proof enough that danger existed. The lynchings of black citizens was no secret because as far back as the 1930s, the Roosevelt administration pushed for anti-lynching laws in the South, but the Dixie-crats (Southern Democrats) in Congress blocked all such efforts.

Great scene. You can't fight racism unless you know where it comes from, how deep it goes.

Black people today you know nothing about real racism discrimination and pure hatred, the b******* they're pushing on you today is totally manufactured you see this movie predicts real racism not some b******* somebody said 30 years ago in a tweet racism is a way of life not something somebody said when they were young and dumb. Black people stop letting these Democrats left wing nuts and Progressive dictate how you feel do your research.

I regard Gene Hackman as a top 10 actor of all time... He recites lines in such a natural casual conversational kind of way. I think Marlon Brando and Jack Nicolson were also of that same kind of capability. Daniel Day Lewis has greater range of emotion than anyone, so I put him at the highest, but those are my four on my acting Mount Rushmore. Who is on your acting Mount Rushmore other than Gene, Marlon, Jack and Daniel?

It's the better than me issue. Poor white people don't like seeing less privileged people improve their lives. Progress takes work. Anyone working from the bottom up deserves mucho respect. It just so happens they happen to be of color.

Has nothing to do with white people. It’s the bad side of human nature. And the fact that you don’t realize that shows your own bigotry towards white people.

Magnificent scene, but I’ve always found it jarringly unrealistic that Ward couldn’t see where Anderson was obviously going with this story. “You think that’s an excuse?” is an unnecessary line and lazy writing

    • @LarryDanaDavid

Ward was an idealistic college guy that thought the world should operate like it does in a classroom. He wasn’t grizzled like Anderson, who saw the unfortunate horrible realities of life.

Rosewood and Tulsa…black folks doing things lawfully and $uce$$fully and here come that fckng racist bullsht!!! Too bad struggling whites in this country who also happen to hate continue to do so when the same socio/economic engines that suppress them do the same to struggling blacks and any other struggling race or ethnic group. PRIVATE EQUITY is one of the main forces fckng most of us up the rear end. NO struggling working class folks should support the GOP as long as they’re anti-union

I wonder why the reason that there is still racism going on is because white people think that they are even more better than black people they look at black people and they see them as trouble that might be why that racism still exists to this fact why does it still happen in the world these days it is never going to end

Telling scene. Lived in the South most of my life. Hasnt changed much, at least in the rural areas. What gets me is that these racist hillbillies don't get that it isnt the POC keeping them down, it's their gentrified puppet masters that have mansions lining every main street in the small towns. The people that rig the system so that all the money goes to them and nip the system so the poor whites see themselves in competition with the POC, not being oppressed by the rich whites, for jobs, land, opportunities, schools, healthcare you name it. And no, I am not suggesting communism, just REAL capitalism where EVERYONE gets a shot
