The process of preparing, painting, and laser etching painted aluminum using a basic hobby level small 20W laser engraver. This technique was used to create new instrument panels and placards in a Flight Design CTSW with professional results. A brief introduction of the man in front of, and behind, the cameras. I've enjoyed the production of a few videos showcasing my aviation interests, and my intention is to create more content going forward and provide more value & entertainment to others.
Flight Design CTsw - Flaps v/s Landing Length, STOL Light Sport Aircraft ? Short Take Off / Landing
Переглядів 11 тис.4 роки тому
CT's are far from STOL airplanes, they are recognized as capable cross country cruisers, ~ 120knots with 6 hours of endurance. Pilots often fly faster (60k) approach to landings and intermediate (15degree) flap settings, which is demonstrated in the first segment. The use of full flaps (40 degrees) and slower approach to landing speeds results in marked differences in length of landing. I view ...

Cessna 150 STOL in Backyard Flying, Pilot Darrell Witham in N8381J, & Stall Demo, GoPro Awesome

Welcome to my home based airport, 4MI8 - Darrell's Landing, ~1800' of turf that launches and lands my Robertson STOL equipped C-150. This video chronicles a typical evening hop around a few eastern Michigan counties in my little bird, with some local airstrip fly by action, scenic views of US / Canada waterway, a full stall demonstration, and subtitled comments for added detail.
Well explained and demonstrated. Thanks for making the process simple to understand
Music ruins this video. I can hear music at will on any day at any time but I can't watch or listen to a Cessna 150 fly on a beautiful day.
I crashed my Flight Design CTLS after annual. Search UA-cam if interested. N121YT
Thanks for this! I've started experimenting with the prepainted aluminum roof trim from the home improvement store, but your technique for getting a good painted surface will open up new color possibilities. My interest is in making nameplates and control panels for electronics, but the goal is the same. Very useful and well presented video!
I also have an SW. it’s an 05. Like you said. It’s not a stol aircraft but people definitely underestimate what it’s capable of. They make a Cessna 150 look bad in every category
I am just getting used to the sw. Can you give some of the speeds you use on downwind base and final and power settings. ? Do you use a larger pattern size. Seems we get on final with 30 flaps and is just wants to stay up in the air on a 88f degree day. Any thought would surely be appreciated. All the best Neal Sw Fla
Great new owner information
I've been doing it that way for 15 years or so, and always felt a bit guilty about using the mechanical method! Good to know it's a more accepted method than I thought! I have a MacFarlane vernier throttle, and will crack the throttle open just enough for a .24 feeler gauge, just because that size is "custom bent". I get a faint amount of drag on the first one, than similar on the second one, works for me,.
Thanks a lot! I wish to have found this before!
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. Thumbs up and subscribed - hope it helps. Could you do the exact same thing on your craftsman toolbox behind you? Could you laser engrave something like that and have it look as good as your aluminum piece? Thanks Darrell!
Do you happen to have the software update for the stratux? I can't get a hold of GRT and been banging head against wall as to why I can't see a baud setting in the stratux. I looked for update on the grt website and read their stratux guide with no success!
Very nice thank you. I am looking at doing my 402 panel🫣😳🤦🏼♀️
First and foremost, thank you for the very informative video. Do you know if the laser will work with powder coating?
Ok land and. T off in the. Everglades. In a j 3 cub in saw grass. Flatten down by half. Tracks. Been. There.
A very good video - issues well explained but Id like a little more detail about how to clean and check condition internally!
Absolutely: TWO THUMBS UP!
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should be using Amber colored lenses. The green lenses are perfect for red lasers, but this laser is blue and requires the amber to block its color spectrum. Just a helpful tip!
Yes, laser goggles $40 and above, and also an orange shield acrylic
Great video, thanks for making. How have the Marvel-Schebler floats held up over time?
Spot on for weights, very pleased with these over OEM type.
Fantastic finish great information.
I would have used a 6 to 7 foot USB cable and continued using the old USB GPS dongle. It would require a small case, which shouldn't be a problem.
Please show stol gear on wings etc and maybe a video showing actual takeoff and landing distance. I have a small property of under 10 acres and have 220 m to play with one way in one way out so naturally I am interested to know if anyone is successfully getting their 150 in and out of small properties.
Michigander here. I plan to buy one in the coming days. Can you reach out to me?
Hey Josh - good to connect, looking forward to flying with you.
Hi @Darrell Witham, very nice video. I would like to touch basis with you regarding the STRATUX working on another system. Hope we can connect to discuss some points. Thank you.
Thank you! I have been struggling to get black paint laser etched on brass. Cured paint and scrub till burnt residue is cleared. I thought the burnt paint phase was a fail!
James Bond 007 style, that is cool.🛩😎
Thanks. I would love to see a follow up on this.
Thank you, useful video !
Great video and 150. We're definitely lucky here in NW Ohio and your area of Michigan to have such great scenery by air.
Thanks for the vid. I've got a 914 and have a question on the sync process. If you use the ferule to adjust the closed position and not the idle screws won't that adjustment get screwed up if you have to adjust the full open position? Rick
There is a lot at play here between the ferule & stops for both carb sides. The idle screws are used to reduce or advance low end RPM, the ferules adjustment is to only match the timing between the two carbs so each side bottoms out simultaneously. My description about adjusting low end idle is not entirely accurate in the video, I'm talking about a very slight difference within the adjustment, the idle screws are the primary means to adjust the RPM.
I have the Vigotec VG L7 too, how long this diode laser last?
Thank you for uploading the tutorial!
Great vid. But I couldn’t get the name of the aftermarket floats. What was it again?
Well explained and clarifies the process perfectly. Will share
Thanks Darrell, helped me out too.
I am a pilot with 50 hours on my and a STOL plane, I am starting to experiment with landing and taking off at different flaps settings and is to much fun. This video is a very good visual of the difference that flaps do. I had to watch it more than once, very cool, thank you
Nicevid. Cut the music next time
One of the Best Videos I have seen on the Rotax 912 Engine Carburetors. Straight Forward and very informative.

One nice 1967 Cessna 150G and some pretty country to fly over. The Pilot could use a little work on tracking the runway centerline. Thank you for sharing. Mike Kelly
très bon travail, je félicite, bonjour de france.
You should get a link to this laser etcher in your post so that you can get referral bonuses!
Beautiful video. Thanks.
Hi Darrell. I landed at your beautiful strip for the first time this afternoon. Enjoyed our visit. Just found your channel this evening. Your video i just watched was great. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
Excellent work!
Man, that is a good-looking aircraft. She seems to come off the ground in a reasonably short distance. Good job.
Excellent advice! Thank you for the information.
Can you use with lightburn?
A BIG plus for the 150's... 40 degree flap availability. Loved the 40 degree flaps...
Nice job Darrell.. Not a bunch of useless youtube jibber jabber, but straight to the point good info! Be sure to make a carb rebuild video or prop balance video, if and when you decide to do those jobs!
