I love sharing what I am learning to help you learn to what you need to continue this watercolor journey. I will be doing watercolor tips and paintings and sketchbook practice. I will also be doing reviews of paints and supplies I use and collect along my way. I am gathering a collection to build a studio and surround myself with the things I will need when I retire so I can continue the lifestyle of "Making Life Beautiful" I am excited to gather a community of like-minded people to join me in the exploration of watercolor and art! I am also really excited to see what opportunities and relationships this journey will bring.
Easy Watercolor Christmas Card Designs For Beginners
This video is about ideas to create Holiday Cards using Rosa Gallery watercolors and Daniel Smith Watercolors using Shizen 5 x 7 Rough watercolor paper. I will demonstrate different brushes such as the Princeton Neptune series, the Winsor and Newton Sable Round brush and small round brushes for details. I will demonstrate how to paint a pine cone, trees and mistletoe using a full value range by increasing the consistency of the paint.

I was sad when I heard that news, kind of late, just early this year. I bought two pans of Roman Szmal quinacridrone Burnt sienna, & two tubes of quinancridrone Rust from M. Graham tubes. The Daniel Smith paints look great too. I do have some DS paints. I was looking at cost when buying. I know M. Graham are pricy, but I was really intrigued by their Q.Rust. The RS paints were on sale at Jackson’s. (PO 48) I think, like you said, having a supply that lasts my lifetime. I am a Roman Szmal fan girl. But I have lots of other brands too. A while back, I tested out my own mixes to make burnt orange/rust. I was quite pleased with some of the recipes. I appreciate your video showing us what is still available. I do like the colour of the DS stick paint the most, that you showed here, solid, no separation of pigment. I’ve not purchased any sticks, but it looks like a good value for money.
@@rachelgetsitright632 yes! I like the sticks really well! I was iffy about them at first because I was trying to draw with them and then wet them and was getting frustrated 😩 but cutting them up or breaking them and putting them in a pan or tossing a few in a pencil case for plein air is great! I may get that M. Graham Q. Rust. Thanks for the tip!
The big mushroom is Michael Harding's Burnt Sienna and the little mushroom is Daniel Smith's Quinacridone Burnt Orange. Find them here on Blick's Artist Materials: www.dpbolvw.net/click-100442257-15734209

I need to get back to painting…just a lot going on…My beautiful, precious feline soulmate was poisoned 2 1/2 months ago. She’d been improving, but 3 weeks ago, I tested positive…and her health declined. She crossed the rainbow bridge Oct 17, in my arms…I’m having a really rough time. I had dedicated 100% of my time, money…and health-trying to save my Princess. Enough of that…Dr Kitty Leela was 12, saved MY life 3 years ago, she was 1/2 Maine Coon, a local celebrity and the smartest, most loving Kitty I’ve ever known. After she passed, my neighbor insisted on taking me to the ER..I hadn’t slept in 4 days, hadn’t been eating right…I was, and still am a mess. I haven’t picked up a brush since she got sick. I’ve been in the hospital twice…and I’m being admitted in a few hours. I put my Rosa gallery paints, one of my WC Journals and larger sheets of WC paper in my bag to come with me…but this reminded me…I have a few more paints I need to squeeze in..Monte Amiata and Mars yellow…hmmm…maybe potters pink too. I have a full pan of PO49…but, to be honest; I prefer the Monte Amiata OR Mars yellow-if I need more glow: PY150, JUST a touch. My dear bestie and daughter keep trying to get me to start painting. 3 days ago, I was told I have a “good size” (😣🤷🏼♀️) brain aneurysm in my basilar artery. I’m also in renal failure. There’s more, but..I HAVE to try and get some sleep. 3 years ago, my precious 32yr old son, first had the virus, a month later he passed away in his sleep from an aneurysm and emboli (clots). We have a rare genetic disorder and are considered extremely high risk. I’m dealing with some extreme disillusionment about my former medical profession….AND…I won’t get into the PA who we believe found his diploma in a box of crackerjacks.. 😖. Sorry…my nerves are shot, I’m doing all I can to stay calm, keep my pressure down..and while the aneurysm is the most critical thing..I have to balance medications, supplements and my diet to make sure I’m not making my 1 failing kidney anymore than necessary..and, hopefully tomorrow, my regular doc and I can at least start figuring out what is going on in my stomach. I don’t want to get anymore graphic than that. Gonna go add those paints and attempt to sleep again..

Quinacridone Gold is one of my favorite colors of all time. It’s just beautiful and it glows. I have only used PO49. I’ll be sad when I run out. These other pigments just can’t capture the true beauty of it to me. I use acrylics by the way.

Those colors mixed with ultramarine are more muddy and uglier, simply speaking. I think many people have found out about this fact, or say "truth" to people's eyes. I never use ultramarine. It's so synthetic, and unnatural, pushing every color into a more degenerate degree. It should be eliminated from the mass-producing lines, the so-called universal palette. Cobalt blue is definitely better in its nature.
@@helixfrechette3405 I agree!
What was the brand of sketchbook? I stocked up on WN quin gold before they sold out. I bunch of 37 mil tubes 😂
@@CharlesCherryWatercolors it was the bee watercolor sketchbook hundred percent cotton
Haha just for the record, PO48 (Quinacridone Burnt Orange) is now no longer in production either. 😢 That is a precious collection of beloved paints you’ve got right there that won’t be available any more as they sell out & go fully extinct, so cherish them & don’t waste them. Very sad, because Q. Gold was an absolute favorite of mine, & the PO48+PY150 was a good replacement formula. I haven’t tried the newer ones, many of which aren’t even quinacridone based (I think most were an Azo yellow mixed with some kind of reds or violets or something to give them the earthy appearance, but from the swatches I’ve seen they don’t look that similar to the original version or the previous replacement formula. It’ll probably still technically be possible to get a hold of some of the previous incarnations of Quin Gold for a while, but you already have to pay extravagant rates for them, so for the average person who can’t blow the cost of several tubes of paint on a single one, it’s largely out of reach (not a bad gift idea for an artist who loves Quin Gold, because it’s possible to get but just expensive enough that it’s hard to rationalize seeking out & buying if they’re struggling to pay for other materials- I’d certainly be psyched to receive even a small tube of it). There have been quite a few pigments going “extinct” recently, though many of them for defensible reasons. Often it’s just that they have fugitive lightfastness & there are more permanent alternatives… A lot of people are sad about Alizarin Crimson going away, understandably (it has a beautiful color appearance). However, Alizarin Crimson used in historical paintings is already fading, & there are actually a lot of ways of achieving similar colors with MUCH better lightfastness. Anthraquinone Red is a nice substitute. There are a number of reds you can mix with pthalo green to neutralize them to a nice crimson reminiscent of Alizarin, but with much better lightfastness. If you want a more opaque version, Pyrrol Red (PR254) + Pthalo Green is great, & an advantage is that since you’re mixing two colors you get a whole spectrum of options & can go as red or as muted as you want rather than just whatever Alizarin Crimson Permanent hue you happen to get in a tube… If you want something more transparent, substituting a more transparent (but still lightfast) red of a similar medium temperature should work, & will be very transparent since Pthalo Green is too. Cobalt Violet also went away due to material availability (cobalt mining is pretty dreadful anyway, so not necessarily a bad thing if less is happening when there are other perfectly good violets to mix). But Quin Gold & Quin Burnt Orange are frustrating, because they’re synthetic- we could be making them; it’s just that they were invented/discovered for use in the auto industry, & when they went out of fashion as car colors, demand dropped enough that they just said “screw the artists who love this pigment,” & stopped producing them on an industrial scale. I hope someone starts again; I’m not sure if it just requires very expensive lab equipment to manufacture these particular molecules on a mass scale or what, that prevents someone from seizing upon the opportunity on a smaller scale yo fill the void by producing it & selling it to all the paint companies, who surely have a readymade market for Quin Gold paints… But afaik that hasn’t happened yet, or at least hasn’t filtered back into distribution on any significant scale yet, if it’s underway somewhere. I got lucky & stocked up on a small amount of Quin Burnt Orange & Quin Burnt Orange replacement formula Quin Gold hue, though just a couple of tubes/small bottles. I recently came across one remaining PO48+PY150 version in Golden High Flow acrylic, but the art stores in my area sold out of the fluid acrylic version (except the new replacement “Azo Gold”) very quickly.
@@SomethingImpromptu you have a lot of knowledge about these pigments. I love the PO 48 and know it is going away ☹️ I love it in Daniel Smith’s Sap green so I stocked up on that. I think Daniel Smith will come up with some good formulations. I wanted a PO 49 but I just can’t justify paying $200 on EBay for a rare tube.
Wow loved all of this info some that I heard about and some not 7:57 and agree with you how sad it is. Quin burnt orange too??? Noooooo! I did not stock up. Now I am super sad, especially since artists keep suffering because of car manufacturers. I wish there could be a new small startup willing to cater just to artists. There is a market, but not sure how profitable and that’s what drives businesses. Ahh to have a tube of PO 49 again… thanks for all the mixing ideas too ❤

It’s the painter’s color diary watercolor. The same paper as New York Central.
Love my Holbein Opera. Rarely use it on its own. It mixes beautifully with a lot of colors to brighten and add warmth.
@@donnad7373 I love it to!
I am a Daniel Smith fan. It’s the main professional paint that I buy and trust. All of these colors were absolutely beautiful. With the way you swatched them there is no way a person could even begin to pick a favorite or even a brighter or duller brand. In order to be able to do that they would need to be swatched with consistent paint to water ratios. Sometimes your swatches were less paint than others and in the mixed ones they were each different than one another. I think it would be very difficult to swatch them all consistently enough to have a fair comparison. On the first pink swatch sheet, look at the Holbein and the Daniel Smith lightest two colors. They are very similar in color. I’ll bet you could adjust the Daniel Smith darkest color and make it look about the same as holbeins. ?? What do you think? There are things I love about each brand. I really think it depends upon what I am painting too. Oh beautiful Opera Rose ~ if only you were a lightfastness color! 😂
@@loveandlife4222 I definitely could have some human error in there for sure! They were all beautiful for sure!

#177 is a fugitive color, so people are trying other colors to make a similar paint, unfortunately, alizarin crimson is also a fugitive paint. (so is opera pink)
@@MsMcKat-ub4sm I know 😕 but I like using them anyway. Especially in my sketchbook. Do you use them or have you found a good alternative?

I don't like any of the colors mixed using ultramarine 🤣 But I know I have to be an exception because wherever I look, ultramarine is there... every palette.

Alizarin Crimson's lightfast rating of IV means it is fugitive. I is the highest lightfast rating.

Very interesting video 👌 I think it would be better to place the camera closer to the color swatch next time? Cause thats the most important thing in the whole video- we want to see it completely sharp and in its whole detailed glory hihi 😅

Love the video! Yes, Autumn is in the air. My favorite time of year. I would be enjoying it if we were not dealing with wild fires. The smoke in the air is so bad that I haven't been able to enjoy being outside for over a month. Bad air quality. Lovely colors Denise!
@@Renilou2 so sorry about the wildfires! Stay safe! ❤️
Wow, my Rhodonite Genuine does not granulate at all. The website says it does not granulate. Pigment: Genuine Rhodonite | Series: 2 Lightfastness: I - Excellent, : my opinion....'> ''''NOT" Transparency: Transparent Staining: 2-Low Staining Granulation: Non-Granulating. But I certainly see yours granulating. Interesting! I LOVE reds! I adore Quin Coral or all PR209s in any brand. Its warm but has this glowing pink undertone. No other pigment has this in between shifting warm cool affect. Its magical to me. Thanks for sharing your reds. Sorry for my late viewing. PS, according to independent sources who tested this product, Rhodonite Genuine is not very lightfast. DS doesn't have the best reputation on product honesty.
@@Renilou2 I’m glad you enjoyed this video! I am enjoying the reds more and more! 😃😃😃

I know this video is a year old, but I thought I would share with you that the little removable cup in the middle is meant to be taken out and the tab on the straight side fits in the slot on either side of the palette, depending on whether you are right or left handed, and used as a water cup when you are plein air painting. That's why it's separate from the palette. Also, you should be able to pull on the lip across that empty space and pull out another mixing tray from under the main palette. You pull it gently out and it stops itself before it goes too far. I've had this palette for years and love it, although I used the paints up, I've replaced them with professional paints, a combo of Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton. I would be interested to know if your palette has the same pull out mixing tray.
What a great tip! Let me pin this comment so others can learn 😀
Great mixing video! I have the Rosa mono pigmented set of 21. I’ve made one painting so far. A male bull finch eating seeds off a dried sunflower. I mixed my own coral for the breast, and black grey for other feathers. Ive been slowly buying more Rosa pans. On a different note, a while back the I was bitten by the love bug for Rust. I’ve made various mixes to create different tones. (I wrote them all down, on scrap paper, that is somewhere 😁) I found out that PO 48 is discontinued. (2 years ago!) so I bought a few pans of PO 48 Roman Szmal quinacradone burnt sienna, and 2 tubes of quinacradone Rust from m. Graham. It might have been a panic purchase. But I’ve still been experimenting with mixing my own rust. I agree that Rosa Gallery paints are the quiet paints that are some times are overlooked. Sorry for the “novel” here!
I have been researching that PO 48 pigment because I heard that too and I love it!

Thanks for watching this old video which is very outdated and the information on my end has changed! I would pick up the Rosa Gallery Monopigmented set from Amazon amzn.to/3XcveYH. I threw these old smelly paints away and invested in others.
I am shocked how vibrant the reds are! I have been spending too much on M. Graham and W&N. Can you comment on the granularity of the reds? I see purple, blues and greens are quite granular. Umbers also because of the nature of the chemical.
I haven't used the Master's Touch / Fine Touch watercolors in many years. They started to smell like gasoline or chemical. I was a little afraid of them so I threw them away. The price of them now is really high! I would recommend Rosa Gallery on Amazon. They are so much nicer and much more affordable. Try this Rosa Gallery Monopigmented set amzn.to/3XcveYH

I noticed your watercolour swatch book. I have seen them on sale on Aliexpress. I am wondering how good is the paper. It is comparable to Baohong paper for CP textured 140lb watercolour paper. Does it warp with wet on wet, pill, lift well etc.? Can you put swatches on the back of the paper or is it one-sided? I am also looking to purchase some Rosa Gallery paints open stock in tubes. What do think about the cobalt turquoise? Is it close to cobalt teal? If the cobalt paint is good then it is an unbelievable price as they are a series 3 paints.
@@snuuby5468 hello! Thank you for your questions! The swatch book is 100% cotton and I do use them on both sides. Back side is blank so I usually do a painting or just more swatching. It does not seem to pill or warp and it does lift well however o haven’t had too much experience with baohong paper so I can’t comment. I just have tried it a couple of times. Compared to arches I would say it is less textured that arches 140 cp but still has good texture. I like the swatch book to keep swatches organized. I am going to link another video for comparison of cobalt teals. The turquoise I used in this video has pb 15 in it which is a phthalo and really strong. Rosa has a cobalt teal though. I tried to find it on Amazon 🤷♀️ it is on Jackson’s. www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/rosa-watercolour-paint

Hullo, I have only seen the original swatch books at Jerry’s Artarama and fairly priced. They have 2 different papers one for water based paint the other is for oil based paint. I might question the quality of a product from one of those knockoff websites. I have never been disappointed with a purchase from Jerry’s Artarama and I have thought about getting one of those swatch books, but I have been working with a system for 30+ years and I am simply not looking to start over with my paints! If I was starting to create a record of my paints? You can bet that I would use these swatch books!
@@mjpete27 the ones from Jerry’s are really good! I prefer them over the knockoff brands!
