I don't think this bird had a broken wing at all. It was just a fledgling that had left the nest and couldn't fly yet and was being cared for by its parents. And of course the mother found it and continued to try to take care of it, in spite of the cage. People do this all the time, pick up flightless fledglings they think are "injured."

I had a baby blue jay I fed him monkey food mashed with hot water full of vitamins and as he got older I introduced him to crickets I fed him to him whole about the third time I fed him with the crickets he'd have nothing to do with them not until he plucked off the back legs then he would swallow them I think I messed up and forgot how rough it would be to poop out those back legs as he got older and was able to fly my mom came over and in the backyard on the porch she was smoking and Petey that's his name grabbed her cigarette and flew up in the tree the smoke got in his eyes and he tore up the cigarette it wasn't long after that he tore up my mom's full pack of cigarettes man he was a cool Jay

For anyone thinking of trying to raise a Scrub Jay: Scrub Jays and Blue Jays are not the same thing. Scrub Jays are a protected species and it is illegal to keep them for any reason at all unless you have the proper permits.

(the story of Frankie B) Two months ago I too rescued a scrubjay. He was lost and fell out of a tall tree. We had to get him so we put him in a dark closet over night and the next day a box visible enough for the mother to see. Well the mother didn't save poor Frankie so we went to buy a Cage and crop feed. Ever since then Frankie gets to fly every day, gets fed fruits and veggies, sings, dances, and takes bird baths :)

shes beautiful! we have two rescued scrub jays. i work for a rescue center and both of mine and grown and healthy:) they come home every night and spend the day flying around town. Both Penelope(the girl) and Calvin(the boy) were attacked by cats and suffered broken legs. they are almost 2 years old now but i enjoy every minute the come in the house to cuddle and take showers with us.
