You are absolutely correct. My use of the name "Jesus" is purely a cultural accomodation to my current culture, which is Americo-English. This is not how his name was pronounced in the first century. I could share pretty accurately the exact way his actual name is pronounced and how it transitioned to "Jesus" in English cultural contexts. But it would be about a 10 minute lecture. I'm not sure how interested you are in that. I'll check though, I may have put it into writing elsewhere. It really needs a video at some point, but I just doubt many people would be interested. I could give you a brief 60 second summary, but it would have to be in transliterations using English fonts and English pronunciation. If you would accept that. Hebrew "Yeshua" (Hebrew יֵשׁוּעַ) , actually a shortened/contracted form of יְהוֹשֻׁעַ, Yehoshua. Now Greek had a completely different alphabet, and it has no "sh" sound. So "Yeshua" would get pronounced "Yesua" instead. Greek also has a rule that male names must end in "us" so Yesua got morphed to Yesus in Greek texts like the New Testament. Finally, in a lot of western languages like German, the "Y"-sound is not pronounced by using the letter "Y"-- but by using the letter "J." Even in German to this day, male names starting with "J" (Jurg, Johann, etc) are pronounced with an English [y] sound. So in the German Bible of Luther, I would bet it was spelled "Jesus" and pronounced "[Y]esus." But, of course, in English, the "J" letter is pronounced completely differently. It's not prounounced like the [y] sound in yellow. It's pronounced like the [j] sound in "jelly" (linguists like me call this sound a voiced alveolar (or postalveolar) affricate; IPA symbol /dʒ/). English translators really should have done a better job transliterating it. And even today, I wish translations would go back and clean up the spelling to make it match the original more closely. We should spell it "Yeshua." But, for now, in most of the major English translations, it is still spelled "Jesus." This is a danger in translation, which most Muslims understand very well, and I appreciate them for it. So, in summary, we lost the "sh" and the "ua" ending because of the switch to Greek. And then we lost the [y] in mis-pronouncing the "J" letter from other European languages, like German, that were the first of the western European languages to translate the name into their Bibles and make that J-spelling popular. I hope that is helpful. It is not often people ask this question, and I applaud you for your astuteness. As for my video, I have linked the relevant data in the video description.
