From my considerable experience with lots of different SLR cameras from the 1970's, including Canon, Pentax and Rollei, I would have said the Praktica was the most reliable of all of them although to be fair almost all of them were reliable except the Rollei cameras which were terrible. The point is, I have never had a Praktica break down, Nova, L series or one of the very fine Bayonet series cameras, but I have had a Pentax break down once and that was a Pentax 6x7, an expensive camera. The Praktica Bayonet cameras were very up to date when launched. Praktica did let there models hang around too long but when launched they did tend to be on the metal. Availability of lenses is a bit of an issue, especially the CZJ lenses that tend to be very expensive even when they occasionally come to the market. I think they are most underrated cameras, and I think any of the full feature B series cameras is preferable to a Canon AE1 and I do have one of those too.

Great video! I'm keen to try this! I'm a little confused about how to check that I've adjusted the light meter the right amount. What signs tell me I've changed it enough, but not too much? You pointed the camera at the sun, but I don't know what to look for at that point. And how did you know how much to change the battery potentiometer? Thanks for the great video!

as long as the shutter fires accordingly, film advances as it should (the MTL3 film advance is not as smooth as Nikon or Canon though but it gets the job done) and tonnes of lens to choose, the M42 use to be dirt cheap but since film photography is trending, some models come with a hefty price tags. But as a film photography enthusiast, I like to have and use either Japan made cameras, Russians, China or Germans because each model has its own characteristic.

Wouldn't it be better then to use Silver Oxide batteries instead of Alkalines? The discharge curve of silver Oxide is similar to that of mercury cells (long stable voltage and at the end a rapid drop) while alkalines lower the voltage constantly when discharging. Just a question.

Big shout out to this video. I was quoted by a camera repair shop €300 to repair the camera when the shutter magnet wasn't sticking properly, which I rightly refused. Found a few videos including this one that showed how to properly disassemble this piece and I gave it a good clean with alcohol and a Q-Tip and it's back to working just like it was, and €300 saved. Thanks a million!

Excellently inspiring video a year ago I purchased a couple of film cameras that were released and made in or around 2000 to make sure to have the most advanced metering and autofocus technolgies. From Nikon I have the F80 which can even work with early versions of Nikon/Tamron lenses designed for digital lenses. From Canon I have the EOS 300X brutally excellent plastic fantastic externally, but internally a gem, it works every and all EF lenses. From Minolta I picked Dynax 7 (A-mount lenses work excellently with moders Sony A7 and A9 camereas). All works excellently and with the current (slide) film prices their reliable performance is important. As for cool and fun factor, a Nikon F2 is definitely a king, but I use mostly with (relatively) inexpensive black and white film stock.

I have been doing photography for 20 years, and I have come to the point where I don't need a light meter. I can look at the light, and I pretty much nail the exposure every time. I have been working my Rollei 2.8 C this way for years.. though medium format seems to be a bit more forgiving in such manners over the 35mm cameras... I was thinking of buying this camera and not worrying about battery situation.

Yes the FE2 is worth the money. Anyway, you have to found one with the new shutter (FE2n). The old honeycomb titanium shutter is known for its multiples issues and cannot be repaired correctly. The FM3A is the one to go since Nikon switch to a high performance aluminium shutter. The best of both worlds : FE2 AND FM2 ! The extra money isn't really a problem if you consider this.

My first digital camera was a Nikon 990 ($1000.00 US new), then for weddings and portraits I bought the Nikon D1X ($5500 new) and the D100 ($2000. new). I still have the 990 but never use it, the D1X died YEARS ago, but the D100 still works. It has a few hot pixels on the rear LCD, but the images it produces are still very good. I printed 20x24 inch images for portrait clients from the D100 and the Fujifilm S-3 Pro (added a little while after the D100). Newer cameras have more than enough megapixels for most people and in my opinion these older cameras should still be great for most image captures. I love the look of the older CCD sensors! :)

There's only one catch about 90s cameras: many of them have miscalibrated autofocus, I tried 3 of them in the past and they were all back focusing. To fix that, you would need specialized software and hardware that no repair shop has anymore, so you're stuck with it. And many times those issues are invisible until you develop your pictures, so you may test it and feel like it's ok, buy it, and then have a bad surprise when you develop your first film roll took on it. I was lucky to get a very skilled technician fetch me a nikon f5 in perfect working condition, he knew how to test this, and at the end the camera just needed some cleaning. But yes, if you manage to get one of those in good condition, you're up to a very serious camera that will work like a charm for many years to come, hopefully.

Thanks, Dan. This video is very helpful. I bought an SRT 101 way back in 1969 when I was twenty. I loved it and regretted later trading it for something else. Last week I decided to go looking for another one and it arrived today out of Japan. Perfect condition and with a 50mm 1.4 lens. I knew I'd need to use a different battery and some online people said recalibrating a camera was a tricky business. I had no idea this camera made it so easy. Ironically, I've been shooting with Sony for a few years now, which is where the Minolta camera tech ended up after being sold by Konica - full circle and all that.

@@Kim_Miller some are tricky to recalibrate but not this one. Have fun with it.

They are forgotten. Which is good for us, who actually know something about them. 😄

Classical cameras are over rated. Went back a bought the F3, FE , FM2, FG... My N90s that I have owned since new blows them all away for film. A good N100, would be best, as it supports VR lenses, If i am correct. AFD lens are a great choice as the work on D200, D700 D3, 4.. Buy the old pro-lenses, as they are 25% of the original cost.

Funny story: I own an old folder front 1999 advertising cameras and they were still selling the Nikon FM2. This camera is selling for something around 500 euros now but back then the price was the same as the Nikon N70 ! They are now definitely overpriced.

I think the 1990’s were the years of the best SLR’s! I have the Nikon F5 and it’s feature packed like a DSLR. I have the F2 and F3 and while they are good mechanical cameras, they come at a higher price point. The best deal is these 1990’s SLR’s they are usually available at a low price and are feature packed. I think the only mechanical camera that has parts being made is the Leica’s, but they are so expensive!
