    It's so impressive what you are doing. As electronic engineer and sailor this is the product that, in my opinion, It's on the top of all the tactical racing systems. Me and my son (12 yo) have developed a similar one based on an ESP32 with 3d printed case and a round tft screen, we call it the Speed Cube (don't copy the name please) , but I have to admit that your products are being our inspiration!! Thanks for sharing the building process!! It's amazing.

    Thanks for sharing this! Why use switches instead of the laser to detect edges?

    • @velocitek
      @velocitek 2 роки тому

      Thanks for the question! The laser sensor is a Keyence IL-065 (www.keyence.com/products/measure/laser-1d/il/models/il-065/). It's designed for measuring the distance between the sensor and a flat surface. It's repeatable to 0.002mm which makes it very effective for adjusting the orientation of the vacuum gripper to get the LCD perfectly flat but the laser beam it uses to take these measurements is about 1mm wide (photo here: shorturl.at/krALR). We tried finding the edges of the LCD by pulling the LCD out from underneath the laser beam and detecting when the depth measurement increased as the beam went over the edge. Unfortunately, this method was only repeatable to about 0.3mm. I think this is because the sensor reading changes continuously as more and more of the wide beam falls off the edge of the LCD. Another advantage of the limit switches is that they cost next to nothing so we can use three of them to detect the edge in three different places which saves a bit of time compared with having to move the LCD to three different positions under the same sensor. The next thing I would like to try is replacing the limit switches with a machine vision camera. It's not super urgent because the limit switches work well but it would save a little time and would be fun to figure out.

    I'm looking for something to help me figure out what the boat is doing (what I'm doing). I love the fact that the Velocitek has buttons! Fantastic - and it seems so intuitive to use. I haven't sailed for nearly 15 years and am getting back to it (catamaran - Viper). I think the hardest part right now (since I won't have the boat for 2 months or so) is figuring out mounting - mast, crossbar, spinnaker pole etc. I'll check and see if you have some videos of various installations.

    This video was shot on an iPhone 11 in bright sunlight. The flickering in the video is a limitation of the iPhone camera and its high shutter speed in direct sunlight. The ProStart display is crystal clear in person. Thanks for watching!

    Great presentation and explanations, thank you. Which distance should it keep from the compass of the boat to don’t get “confused” o interfered by the compass magnetism? Thank you again

      For good compass accuracy, we recommend keeping the ProStart at least 1m from any magnetic objects (steel, iron, etc...)

      In the final minute of the countdown the bar graph segments will display ‘Pacing Guides,’ giving you an indication of whether you are on track to be early or late to the line given your current boat speed and heading. The early / late bar graph provides a graphical representation for your estimated location at the gun based on your current position, speed, Course Over Ground, and the time remaining in the countdown. The bar graph extends above the illustrated line if the calculated future location is over the line and below the illustrated line if your future location is under the line. When no bar graph segments are showing - the “0” display - your estimated future location at the gun is between the line and 2 meters below the line. Each segment shown represents +/- 2m from this “0" location. For example, 2 bar graph segments showing above the line represents that you are predicted to be between 2m and 4m over the line at go. For simplicity’s sake this algorithm assumes the line to be of infinite length so it does not compensate for any situation where your current heading would not take you through the starting line. The goal is to eliminate all the bar segments around the perimeter and only have the semicircles showing. This indicates that at your current speed and heading you are expected to be within 2 meters of the line at the gun.
